Listening to music, watching movies, reading novels. Which kind of art is your go-to choice for fun? According to a new study, art not only calms your mind but also improves your 1 health.
For the first time, scientists in the UK found that art helps the immune (免疫的), endocrine (内分泌的) and nervous systems all at once, said The Guardian. The study included 50 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 40. Half of them went to see real artworks at the Courtauld Gallery in London, 2 the other half looked at copies of the same paintings in a non-gallery setting. All of them wore health sensors throughout the experiment.
The result showed a 22 percent drop in stress hormones (激素)for the gallery-goers and an 8 percent drop for the other group, according to Art Fund. Signs of inflammation (炎症) also 3 by about 30 percent for the gallery group.
It’s not just visual arts that have such effects. For example, a 2021 Swiss study said that dance reduces stress by improving movement control.
What makes art so powerful? Scientists have different ideas. One, developed by Edward Vessel at the College of New York, looks to our brain’s default mode network. This network is 4 believed to play a key role in creativity, and it is usually quiet when we focus on things in the outside world. 5 , when we enjoy art the network becomes active along with other focus-related brain regions.
Although we are still learning 6 this works, art’s power has long been used in treatment. According to American Scientist art therapy was first developed to help traumatized (心理受创的) World War Ⅱ soldiers express 7 . The traumas often affected their brain’s speech centers, making traditional talk therapy less effective. Since then, art therapy has benefited over 650 million worldwide.
Quantitative (定量的) studies like the recent the UK can help make art easy more art therapy more 8 , said Marygrace Berberian, a professor at New York University, in the university’s press 9 in September. Policymakers and insurance companies 10 on this data to make decisions about coverage, Berberian explained.

It was Monday morning, and the ninth-grade classroom was in chaos. Mr. Wilde’s English 1 had disappeared from his desk over the weekend. The strange thing was that nothing else was taken—not the computer, not the money in the drawer, only the thirty-five homework papers.
Lily, a quiet but observant girl who loved detective novels, decided to investigate. She noticed three important clues that others had missed. First, there were faint 2 footprints near the teacher’s desk, though it hadn’t rained for days. Second, the window lock was broken from the 3 , not the outside. Third, she found a tiny 4 thread caught on the edge of the desk drawer.
Lily thought about who had been in the classroom last Friday. There was Zhang Wei, who had stayed after class to ask questions. There was also the cleaning lady, Mrs. Chen, who came every evening. And there was the 5 , Tom, who had borrowed the key to get a book he forgot.
Lily examined everyone’s shoes after the morning exercises. Zhang Wei wore black sneakers, clean and dry. Mrs. Chen wore comfortable brown shoes with a special pattern. Tom wore 6 with a little mud on the edges. Looking closer, Lily noticed Tom’s jacket had a small tear near the 7 , and the thread matched the blue thread she found!
When Lily quietly asked Tom about Friday evening, he looked 8 . “I just came to get my book,” he said quickly. But Lily remembered something: Tom had already submitted his homework 9 last week. Why would he need to take all the papers?
The real answer came when Lily checked the homework records. Tom hadn’t actually submitted his work. He had been absent on Friday when others submitted theirs. He must have taken all the papers so his missing homework wouldn’t be noticed!
Lily didn’t embarrass Tom publicly. Instead, she told Mr. Wilde what she found, and the teacher handled the situation privately. The mystery was solved not by magic, but by careful 10 and logical thinking—the true tools of any detective.

Hi! My name is Adam and I’m a freshman in senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big difficulty. The first week was a little 1 .
First, I had to think very carefully about which 2 I wanted to take. I spent hours looking through the course list, marking possible choices with a yellow marker and crossing out (删掉) ones that didn’t 3 my schedule, until my desk was covered in crumpled notes. The school adviser helped me choose the suitable ones: Maths, English, Chemistry, World History, and Chinese. I know that Chinese is a very 4 language, but I hope to be fluent and get an A when I graduate. My adviser recommended I sign up for advanced literature since I like English and I’m good at it.
I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn’t play well enough. During the tryout, I 5 an important pass that would have made a goal. The coach said I had courage but needed more practice, which hurt more than I wanted to say. There is no doubt that I was unhappy, but I won’t stop trying. I’ll find a way to 6 on my own so that I can make the team next year.
I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and 7 food to homeless people in the community. Last week, I was serving hot soup 8 the old man began telling me his army stories, and the work suddenly allowed me to meet more people from different backgrounds.
I know I’ll have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to being responsible for a lot more. I’m a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced course, 9 since some of them already seem to know the material really well, and it’ll be quite difficult to get used to all the homework. Still, I’m 10 to be here. Studying hard isn’t always fun, but I’ll be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future.

A hundred years ago, a group of scientists built a model that 1 changed the old way people understood reality: quantum mechanics (量子力学). To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its birth, the United Nations named 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
Quantum mechanics studies very 2 things, like atoms and even smaller particles (粒子). Around 1900 scientists such as Max Planck and Albert Einstein started to describe why the atomic (原子的) world could not be explained by the classical theories developed by Isaac Newton and others two centuries earlier. In the 1920s, more scientists including Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrodinger bravely 3 from classical physics and developed quantum mechanics further, opening the door to future progress and useful inventions that continue to 4 our modern life. As Nature noted: “Modern physics is quantum physics.”
In quantum mechanics, many counter-intuitive phenomena happen. For example, an atom can be in two places at the same time, and a cat in a box can be both alive and dead. In another 5 called “spooky action at a distance”, when two particles become entangled (纠缠的), the state of one instantly influences the state of the other, 6 far apart they are. It’s like having a pair of magical dice (骰子) that always show the same numbers, even from opposite sides of the galaxy (星系).
These 7 may sound hard to imagine or even strange, but they are the reason we have modern technology today. The GPS that finds your location, the bright LEDs in your phone screen and MRI machines that make medical images all come from quantum principles. Most importantly, the design of the silicon chip (硅芯片) 8 every computer and smartphone depends on our understanding of how electrons behave in semiconductors (半导体) a quantum effect.
As we celebrate its 100th birthday, quantum science is advancing faster than ever. Scientists are building quantum computers that could solve problems too hard for today’s supercomputers and 9 quantum encryption (加密技术) to make unbreakable communication networks. Quantum physics has taught us that the universe is full of surprises and that its 10 are as great as our imagination.

On September 10, 2025, Luo Yonghao, a famous live-streaming host, 1 on social media that the food at Xibei restaurants was “mostly pre-made, expensive, and tasted bad.” The next day, Jia Guolong, the founder of Xibei, replied 2 : “Xibei is certainly not a pre-made food company.” He also said he would take legal action against Luo and open all Xibei kitchens to the 3 .
According to national 4 , pre-made meals must be pre-processed in factories, pre-packaged, heated before eating, and must not include preservatives (防腐剂). Jia explained that Xibei only does “pre-processing”: ingredients are washed and cut in a 5 kitchen, but the actual cooking is done in each store.
However, many people still 6 Xibei’s food. Luo pointed out that the dishes tasted “reheated” and were 7 of the fresh taste of pot cooking. He also questioned why the food was still so expensive though it wasn’t freshly made.

Hi, I’ve been looking for a place to share this story which makes me happy whenever I think of it.
Fifteen years ago, I was working at a care home in a small town. We had an elderly gentleman, John, who was a WWII soldier. He was lovely but 1 . His wife had passed away and he had no children. We did our best for him but he 2 to feel blue. He used to go for a walk in a nearby park every day.
One summer, he returned to the home, upset (心烦意乱的). He said a group of teenagers in hoods (兜帽) were in the park all the time and he found it 3 . The teenagers were loud and he was afraid. He stopped going to the park. 4 , he missed the walk too much.
On the day he returned, he said, “If I’m not back in an hour, come looking for me.” He wasn’t back in an hour. I gave it 10 more minutes, and then ran to find him. I thought he’d had a(n) 5 .
When I reached the park, John was sitting on a bench with 4 teenagers around him, listening to every word John was saying. He was 6 and talking about WWII.
He returned to the home two hours later, overjoyed because he’d made new friends. John had even told them they frightened him. The teenagers 7 their hoods and said sorry.
Anyhow, nearly every day, John met them at the park. Finally, he started wearing a cap 8 autumn came. In winter, those kids came to the home once a week with snacks, and watched a war movie with John.
They called him Pops. For Christmas, they gave him a hoodie which John wore a lot later. John went from being lonely and sad to being happy. Even when he got very sick, those teenagers 9 visiting him until John passed away.
I think John 10 them but they had a big effect on John too. It is a genuine friendship that is really moving to witness and always warms my heart.

Life Is Beautiful is an Italian movie that tells a powerful story about a father’s love during World WarⅡ.
The movie begins in the 1930s in a small Italian town. Guido, a(n) 1 Jewish (犹太) man with a big smile, always makes people laugh with his jokes and magic tricks. Guido often tells his son Giosuè, “Life is a 2 ! If you smile and play fair, you’ll always win!”
When World War II begins, they are 3 to head to a camp (集中营). Guido knows the camp is dangerous, 4 he wants to protect his son’s innocence (纯真). He invents a clever story to explain the situation to his son: “This is all part of a big game, Giosuè! The winner’s prize is a REAL tank (坦克)!” He 5 makes up rules for the “game”.
Getting points: Giosuè gets points for hiding quietly, 6 the guards, and not crying for candy.
Losing points: If the guards see him or if he complains about hunger, he loses points.
The big prize: If they earn 1,000 points, they win a tank.
In the camp, the prisoners (囚犯) work all day and are really tired. But Guido pretends his tiredness is part of the game. Guido says to his son, “Look how many points we got today!” He also tells him imaginative stories about their “progress” in the game. He describes how close they are to winning the tank, making Giosuè’s eyes shine with 7 .
As the war nears its end, Guido hides Giosuè inside a small metal box. 8 , a soldier catches Guido. When walking away, he passes Giosuè’s hiding box. Knowing his son is watching, Guido throws his leg high in the air like a silly and funny duck and winks at Giosuè. It is his final act of love in life—making his son 9 one last time.

Carlos wanted a bulldog puppy very much.
“That kind of dog is too 1 ,” said Mama. “Try to make some money. Ask our neighbors if they have jobs you can do.”
After two weeks, Carlos had saved twenty-six dollars. But it was not enough to 2 a puppy. Then, Papa pointed out a poster at the store: City Animal Shelter Needs Your Help!
“The shelter 3 homeless pets,” Papa said. “Carlos, you need to know how to care for a puppy before you get one. I’m sure you can 4 a lot by working there.”
At the shelter, Miss Jones, the manager said, “We only take volunteers who work for 5 . All our money is to help animals.”
“You’ll know a lot about dogs,” Papa 6 Carlos.
Carlos’s shoulders dropped. How was he ever going to get enough money for a puppy? Finally, he agreed to give it a try.
Carlos started working at the shelter on Saturday. His task was sweeping. One 7 named Pepper jumped and ran around him all the time. After several weeks, Carlos began to treasure his time with the dogs, especially Pepper. One day Carlos asked Miss Jones 8 Pepper was sill at the shelter.
Miss Jones sighed, “We’ve had fun finding a home for Pepper. Most people don’t want such an energetic dog.” “I 9 I could buy her,” Carlos replied.
Miss Jones smiled, “You can’t buy her, 10 you can adopt (领养) her.” With his parents’ permission, Carlos made it at last. “I thought I wanted a bulldog puppy, but I got Pepper instead.” Carlos said.
Pepper barked with joy.

Christmas was around the corner and Edith was faced with a problem. As she walked round the large mall, Edith realized how difficult it was to choose a suitable 1 for her father. She wished that he was as easy to please as her mother, who was always happy with perfume (香水). Besides, shopping at this time of the year was a most 2 job. People in shops stepped on your feet and 3 you with their shoulders. Sometimes, they even knocked you over in their hurry in order to find 4 cheap before you.
Partly to have a rest, Edith stopped in front of a counter, where some ties were on show. “They are real silk,” the shop assistant told her with a smile, 5 to persuade (说服) her to buy one. But Edith knew from past 6 that her choice of ties never ever pleased her father.
She moved on 7 and then, quite by chance, stopped where some men had gathered round a counter. She found some fine pipes on sale and the shapes were very beautiful. Edith did not hesitate (犹豫) for long. 8 her father only smoked a pipe once in a while, she believed this was quite certain to please him.
When she got home with her small but 9 present hidden in her handbag, it was time for supper and her parents were already at the table. “Your father has at last decided to stop smoking,” her mother told her 10 . Edith was so surprised that she could not say a single word.

It was the last math exam before summer. But Scott didn’t worry. He was the best math student in the class, and he never had to work very hard at it. It used to make the other students 1 because he never studied, yet he always got the best mark.
As usual, he was the 2 one done. The next day, a call came to his house and he was asked to go to the school. “But school is over and it’s summertime now!” he thought.
3 he arrived at the school, his parents, the math teacher and the principal were there to meet him. “Wow!” he thought. “I must have scored 100 percent on the exam!”
Sure enough, the principal said the meeting was about his math exam. But what he said next left Scott stunned (震惊的). “You 4 ,” the principal said. “Since you were a little kid, you have found math easy. But now you are at the point where you have taken your talent in math and 5 it. It’s time for you learned that you couldn’t just walk into an exam unprepared.”
The principal continued, “I was like you when I was a boy. My 6 was in science. I didn’t need to study for science at all. I was the class ace (顶尖高手). But one day, I failed a big exam. You see this picture? It was given to me by my science teacher that day. This ugly-looking bird is called a buzzard. Read 7 it says at the bottom.”
Scott read it aloud, “Welcome to the Buzzard Club. Remember, it’s not about brains. It’s about hard work.”
“A buzzard can only fly if it gets a running start,” the principal 8 . “It can’t just leap into the air like other birds. But once it’s in the air, it can soar (高飞) to great heights. Keep this bird in mind. Remember, 9 is like that running start. Combined with your natural ability, it will 10 you to fly like a bird!”
Scott became a proud member of the Buzzard Club. And he never failed a math exam again.
