As a young boy playing along the beaches of Vancouver Island, David Katz was astonished by the amount of plastic waste washing up on the shore. This image of marine plastic pollution left an impression on him and stimulated his desire to handle the issue and make a meaningful difference.
In 2013, Katz translated his passion into action by creating Plastic Bank — a social enterprise aimed at reducing the amount of waste plastic in our oceans while enhancing the lives of people living in coastal regions which are easily influenced.
The Plastic Bank model centers around collection communities that exchange waste plastic for income. After community members drop off their plastic and receive payment, Plastic Bank recycles the collected plastic and generates Social Plastic feedstock (原料). This recycled material re-enters the supply chain, reducing the need to produce new plastic while supporting plastic circularity (循环) — using plastics more effectively by keeping the material in use for longer, then recovering it to make new products.
Over the years, the organization has achieved remarkable milestones. From its initial pilot (试点的) project in Haiti to developing over 550 recycling communities in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa, Plastic Bank has stopped over 100 million kilograms of plastic from polluting our oceans.
“We see Plastic Bank as a driving force for encouraging joint actions, driving innovation, and creating an environment where recycling is a force for good, helping to improve disadvantaged communities and protect the planet,” Katz says. “Our initiatives in the process aim to expand the reach of our movement, helping to make it accessible to all who wish to contribute to a sustainable economic future.”

On the first day of fourth grade, my teacher, Mrs Brown, told my class a story about her husband Rob, who is a brain cancer survivor. After what Mrs Brown experienced with Rob's illness, she decided to devote part of her life to an organization called Be Head Strong, which works to support families with a member suffering from brain cancer.
Along with typical maths and science, throughout the year, Mrs Brown shared stories with us about people in Be Head Strong who had overcome some tough and unfair battles. Mrs Brown never showed any sadness or confusion toward the disease. She instead spoke only with words of determination to find a cure.Whether news from Be Head Strong was good or bad, she always looked at the situation as an opportunity to improve and do more.
My parents taught me from a very young age that making wise choices with my money is important. I would always set aside most of my $2.50-a-week allowance. By the end of the school year, I had saved over one hundred dollars, $131.30 to be exact. One day, I was wondering what to do with it. time_saving. I thought about the stories Mrs Brown told us, then I decided that was where I wanted my money to go.
As the last day of school approached, my mom helped me wrap the heart-shaped box full of dollars and coins. After all the other kids had left on the last day of school, I handed Mrs Brown the present. As she opened it, I told her that I wanted the money to go to Be Head Strong to help people like Rob.She burst into tears and hugged me tightly.
People may not always realize how big an influence one kind gesture can make. One teacher encouraged a decision in my life that has changed the way I live.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五
Let's be honest here: random acts of kindness make us feel good. They help benefit society in small ways, and those small benefits can turn into huge benefits. Being an everyday hero means willingly and joyfully choosing random acts of kindness to make the world a bit brighter. __9__ Start with these ideas.
Leave a space cleaner than you found it. If you eat out, keep your table clean, making it a little easier for your server. At home, keep your things organized. __10__
Be kind to strangers. It's well-known that everyone is fighting separate but equally different battles. Although you might not be able to understand everyone's struggles, you can offer unconditional kindness and patience. __11__ Maybe the fast-food worker has two other jobs and children at home. Although you don't know their situations, kindness is always appreciated.
__12__ The easiest way to determine whether someone needs help is to ask, and respect their answers. When close friends and loved ones are struggling, your support can be a “I love you”.
__13__ Your local resale shop can provide you with more information on this. By donating the things that you don't need or use, you allow another person to benefit from them.
A.Try to stand up for someone.
B.Help someone who's struggling.
C.Choose to donate your used things.
D.Don't leave a mess for others to clean up.
E.When you've decided to be a hero, be it right now.
F.If you can, take five minutes and be an everyday hero.
G.Maybe the bad-tempered old man suffers from a disease.
10.选D 根据本段的主旨句“Leave a space cleaner than you found it.”及空前一句“At home, keep your things organized.”可知,D项“不要留下脏乱的状态让别人收拾”符合语境。
11.选G 根据下一句“Maybe the fast-food worker has two other jobs and children at home.”
