A Small talk is a very short conversation used by individuals to kill time and make the other person feel comfortable in their presence. However, sometimes you should be careful of your topics. There are certain “safe” topics that people usually discuss. The weather is probably the number one thing that people who do not know each other well discuss. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation. Another topic that is generally safe is current events. As long as you are not discussing a controversial_issue,such as a recent law concerning equal rights, it is usually safe to discuss that. Entertainment and sports news is another good topic. If there is something that you and the other person have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about. For example, if the bus is extremely full and there are no seats available, you might talk about the reasons why. Similarly, people in an office might casually discuss the new paint or furniture. There are also some subjects that are not considered acceptable when making small talk. Discussing personal information such as salaries or a recent divorce is unacceptable between people who do not know each other well. Compliments on clothing or hair are acceptable; however, you should never say something (good or bad) about a person's body. Negative comments about another person not involved in the conversation are also not acceptable. When you do not know a person well, you cannot be sure who their friends are. You do not talk about private issues either, because you do not know if you can trust the other person with your secrets or personal information. Lastly, it is not wise to continue talking about an issue that the other person does not seem comfortable with or interested in. 1.What is the purpose of paragraph 1? A.To give a definition of small talk. B.To warn people of avoiding some topics of small talk. C.To introduce the main topic. D.To list the situations people make small talk. C。 2.Which of the following is NOT the best topic when you make small talk? A.Beautiful day, isn't it? B.Have you got a boyfriend? C.Did you watch the news today? D.What do you think of the new computers? 根据第六段的“Discussing personal information such as salaries or a recent divorce is unacceptable between people who do not know each other well.” B。 3.What does the underlined part “controversial issue” in the fourth paragraph most probably mean? A.Private question. B.Acceptable question. C.Debatable question. D.Interesting question. 根据第四段的“Another topic that is generally safe is current events. As long as you are not discussing a controversial issue, such as a recent law concerning equal rights, it is usually safe to discuss that.” C。 4.Which of the following belongs to small talk that most probably takes place at a bus stop? A.Can you lend me some money for a ticket? B.Excuse me, which bus should I take to get to the park? C.It looks as if it will rain. I should have taken my umbrella. D.The buses are very slow these days, aren't they? 通读全文可知,在公交站,人们可能会就公交相关的事情进行闲聊,D选项“The buses are very slow these days, aren't they?” D。 B Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table, a movement of ordinary people who want to create community right in their own front yards.Ten years ago, she and her family moved to a new home in Austin, Texas. One day, Kristin tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting a party. She bought a few picnic tables but the delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake.“After the party, I painted the table turquoise — my favorite color — and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk,” she says. That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks.“We got intentional (有目的的) about where we spent our time,” Kristin says.“We became ‘front yard people’.” Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat.Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. Then neighbors asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too.A movement was born.“It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others,” she says. The turquoise table was inviting and had a shared feel. People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, and is not big enough or they don't have enough time.“Our perfectionism can cause us to miss out on the joy of connecting with others,” Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses — and the pressure. She likes how it enables her to take a small step toward easing loneliness and building relationships in her community.“People's greatest need is to know that they are loved and that they belong,” she says. A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise.“No matter what color it is, it's a friendship table,” Kristin says. 5.Why did Kristin Schell start the movement? A.To host more parties in her front yard. B.To entertain her friends and neighbors. C.To get in touch with people in the neighbourhood. D.To create harmonious communities worldwide. 根据第一段和第二段的“One day, Kristin tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting a party.”以及第四段的“It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others”可知,克里斯汀·谢尔发起了这项运动的目的是与邻居建立联系。故选C。 6.Which of the following words best describe Kristin Schell according to the text? A.Creative and sociable. B.Friendly and humorous. C.Generous and ambitious. D.Careful and responsible. 根据第四段的“Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea.” A。 7.What can be inferred from the text? A.People don't like others to step into their houses. B.The campaign has a big influence at home and abroad. C.Kristin Schell bought the turquoise table to host a party. D.People feel unwilling to join in the front yard chat at first. 根据最后一段的“A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world.” B。 8.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.Love Your Neighbors B.An Amazing Woman C.Happy Front Yard Time D.Tables Where All Are Welcome 解析:选D 标题归纳题。 An old friend of mine was in town and organized a get-together.A mutual friend asked me if I was going.I answered no because I wasn't interested in it. __9__ However, I just refused.Do you feel that you sometimes have to lie to spare people's feelings? I sure do.But I'm trying to do it less. Here's why: ·__10__ Do you feel it like a mini lack of good faith every time you say a white lie? It doesn't feel good because, at heart, you want to be honest. ·You have to remember lies. Have you ever been caught in a lie? I have.It feels untrustworthy.I don't know about you, but my memory is not good enough to even remember all the true things I say.__11__ ·People respect the truth. I had meant to go to a friend's house for dinner once, but she called in the morning of the day to cancel. She said,“I'm sorry Susie but ...I'm just so tired and I need today to rest.” I didn't get angry at that moment.__12__ And we had a nice phone call, instead. ·“No” is enough. It's so easy to give a quick “yes” and have regrets later,or make up a lie to get out of something. But you don't have to! You can say “no” at the start. A calendar does not exist to be filled up.__13__ And there's no shame in doing what you need, especially when you're honest about it. A.Lying makes you feel bad. B.The space in our lives can be the best part. C.Lying is costly and you're too busy for that. D.I could have made some acceptable excuse. E.However, I forgave her though she had betrayed me. F.On the contrary, her frankness made me feel closer to her. G.Therefore, you'd better remember lies in case you're trapped. D项“我本可以编个可让人接受的借口”与下句“However, I just refused.” 另外,小标题“You have to remember lies”中的“have to”强调代价。 12.选F 结合空前的句子“I didn't get angry at that moment.”以及空后的句子“And we had a nice phone call, instead.” 13.选B 空前的句子“A calendar does not exist to be filled up.”
