及
Heman's been named TIME's Kid of the Year for 2024.He's come up with an idea
for a soap()that could help treat skin cancer, and he is already working with scien-
tists to test his idea.
Heman's family came to America from Ethiopia when he was 4.He remembers
seeing people there working in the sun without protecting their skin. From his parents,
he learned about the dangers of cancer, and how important it was for people to protect
their skin from the sun.
Heman kept all this in mind.As a curious boy,he started doing experiments.Later,
he read about a medicine called "imiquimod"that can help fight skin cancer.Heman knew
it'd be helpful to get imiquimod to people in the early stages of skin cancer. He thought a
good way might be through soap.
But Heman knew simply mixing imiquimod with soap wouldn't work. The medicine
would just wash away.Instead,he thought about creating a soap with the medicine inside
super tiny“nanoparticles”(纳米粒子).These could stick to the skin and deliver the
imiquimod after the soap washed off.
Last year, when he was 14,Heman created a video explaining his idea, and used it to
enter the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. He finally came first, which came with a $25,000
prize.Heman is now working with scientist Vito Rebecca. His soap project is still at an
early stage, but Heman has already made some soap.He and Dr.Rebecca are running
tests.
Heman is a very busy student, dividing his time between the lab and school. He
plays the flute()in a music band.Outside of school,he enjoys playing basketball,
reading, and playing chess. But Heman says he's crazy about skin cancer research."It
feels great to think one day my soap will help save people's life,"he told TIME.

I'm a psychology researcher.Along with my instructor Thackery Brown and music
experts Sophia Mehdizadeh and Grace Leslie, our recently published research uncovered
interesting connections between music, emotion and memory. When you listen to music,
it is not merely hearing engagement. The areas of your brain responsible for emotion and
memory also become active. The hippocampus, which is essential for storing and
retrieving (memories, works closely with the amygdala, the brain's emotional
center. This is partly why certain songs are not only memorable but also deeply emotional.
While music's ability to set off emotions and memories is well known,we wondered
whether it could also change the emotional content of existing memories. Our theory was
rooted in the concept of memory reactivation-the idea that when you recall a memory,it
becomes temporarily changeable, allowing new information to be included.
We then developed a three-day experiment. On the first day, participants memorized
a series of short,emotionally neutral()stories.The next day,they recalled these
stories while listening to either positive music, negative music or silence. On the final
day,we asked participants to recall the stories again, this time without any music. On
the second day,we recorded their brain activity with FMRI scans, which measure brain
activity.
The results were striking. When participants listened to emotionally changed music while
recalling the neutral stories, they were more likely to include new emotional elements into the
story.Even more interesting were the brain scans. When participants recalled stories
while listening to music, there was increased activity in the amygdala and hippocampus.
This is why a song associated with a significant life event can be so powerful-it activates
both emotion and memory-processing regions.
Memories, much like your favorite songs, can be remixed and remastered by music.
The music you listen to while looking back or even while going about your daily routines
might be subtly(不易察觉地)shaping how you remember those experiences in the future,
However, further research is needed to confirm whether our findings have significant effects on
everyday life and medical practices.
28.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.Music is tied to emotion and memory.
B.The author is enthusiastic about music.
C.Listening to music makes the brain excited.
D.Emotional music can influence our memory.

A.They are easier to remember.
B.Their details are hard to change.
C.They are more common in our daily life.
D.They make new emotional elements apparent.
30.What can be inferred form the last paragraph?
A.Music may function as a means of curing.
B.Details of our memories can be changed greatly.
C.Only songs related to important life events can touch us.
D.Their findings are short of strong and sufficient support.
31.What does this text mainly talk about?

C.Music can change how we feel about the past.
D.There's more potential to explore in music.
D
In today's fast-paced world,multitasking has become the norm,and often a requirement
on job listings. For many people, multitasking has become a way of life and even a key to
success. In fact, some excellent mental exercises involve engaging the brain in two or
more challenging activities at a time. However, while we take pride in our ability to tackle
multiple tasks at the same time,we are likely to overestimate our multitasking capability.
A study was conducted on individuals who engage in media multitasking, such as
using Facebook while watching TV,to assess whether multitasking enhanced productivity
in specific tasks. The findings revealed that we often don't remember things as well when
we're trying to manage several details.Without mental focus,we may not pay enough attention
to new information coming in,so it never makes it into our memory stores.
Actually, when we switch between multiple tasks,we must pay a specific bill known
as the task-switch cost.Multitasking damages the brain networks involved, leading to
reduced performance accuracy. We're more likely to make errors when switching between
tasks,as compared to when our focus remains locked on a single task, and completing the
multi-tasks will take longer. While practice can enhance your multitasking abilities,it's
impossible to entirely avoid the costs of task-switching.
Now,some tasks demand minimal active thinking and can be mastered without realizing
you're multitasking. One example is having a phone conversation while walking.Walking
doesn't demand your brain's active engagement to coordinate()movement.Thus,
focusing on a phone call with your mom while taking a walk does not pose an increased
cognitive()demand.However,if you were to cross a busy street while talking,
your brain would distract()attention from the talk, which could potentially cause
you to miss important points in the conversation.
In conclusion, while multitasking may not be advantageous in every situation, there
are specific contexts where it can be beneficial. For instance, activities like taking a walk
while thinking over a problem can lead to insights and clarity. It is crucial and proper to
assess the advantages and disadvantages of multitasking for yourself, and avoid juggling
multiple tasks if they start to cause more stress or mistakes.
32.Which statement would the author agree with?
A.Multitasking may be a misconception.
B.Multitasking should be practiced regularly.
C.Excellent mental exercises are meaningful.
D.Multitasking is an absolute advantage in today's world.

Developing artistic appreciation in teenagers is crucial for developing creativity,
enhancing emotional intelligence, and broadening their perspectives.36 It's more
than memorizing facts. It's also about experiencing art in different ways, which can touch
their heart and stimulate their creativity.Below are some approaches to achieving this.
37 Youth should be introduced to a wide range of arts, including painting,
music,theater,dance,and film.Museums,galleries,and performances provide
excellent platforms for wonderful experiences.Regular visits to such places expose them to
different styles, periods, and cultures, enhancing an appreciation for human creativity.
Besides,nurturing()curiosity through guided discussions and activities is essential.
38 Why does the artist choose certain colors? What emotions does the music convey?
These inquiries stimulate deeper engagement and understanding, nurturing a thoughtful
approach to art.
Moreover, encouraging critical thinking also helps boost artistic appreciation.Teach youth
to evaluate artworks based on technique, expression, and cultural context.Discussing their
differences and comparing them with others develop empathy()and open-mindedness.
This skill is vital for forming personal opinions.39
Lastly, encourage them to create their own artistic works.Don't forget that artistic
literacy also means creating their own art.40 Don't worry about being perfect;the
goal is to express and have fun.Give them a notebook where they can document their
creations and reflect on their artistic journey.Over time, you'll see how their skills and
styles develop.
A.It's a multidimensional effort.
B.It will take you on a journey through time.
C.Exposure to diverse art forms is fundamental.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a middle school teacher,I've been blessed to guide numerous young minds
throughout my career.I have also had the privilege of shaping young minds and hearts,
each with their own unique stories and challenges.
One particular year,I encountered a student named Jim,whose family circumstances
were awful.Every day,he would arrive with a simple sandwich wrapped in a piece of
worn-out paper for lunch-a humble meal that obviously contrasted with the delicate lunches
brought by other students. His backpack, old and worn at the edges, carried not just
books but the weight of his family's struggles.
One of my colleagues,Sarah,a new teacher who had just graduated, shared the
same concern for Jim.She made a proposal that we should help Jim somehow.Determined
to make a difference,I,teaming up with Sarah,made a plan to incorporate()Jim more
meaningfully into our classroom community. We began by "hiring"Jim for small tasks
around the class or our school, such as helping to organize the library or assisting with
classroom setups.In return,we paid him a modest "salary"from our own funds,careful
to make it clear that this was not charity but recognition of his hard work and valuable
contributions. We also took the time to instruct Jim,offering after-school teaching
lessons to help him with his studies and providing encouragement and guidance for his
future ambitions.Sarah and I made a conscious effort to create a supportive environment
where Jim felt safe to express himself. We listened to his stories, acknowledged his
struggles, and celebrated his successes,no matter how small.
However, life took an unexpected turn. Two weeks later,I had to leave the school
due to unforeseen circumstances. My heart was heavy with concern for Jim,especially about
how Sarah,a young and possibly less experienced teacher would handle this situation.I
worried about whether she would be able to continue the delicate balance of support and
encouragement that we had carefully built. Moreover,Jim had become used to our
regular guidance and the stability we provided.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Thinking about all these,I couldn't wait to give Sarah a call.
When I revisited the school,I was amazed to see the transformation in Jim.
