Passage 1
Hey there! If you’re looking to start the new year with a healthier relationship with food, I’ve got some diet resolutions for you. Let’s dive right into it and make this year the healthiest one yet!
Drink more water
Drinking enough water can make a big difference for your health. Aim for between 2.5 and 3.5 liters per day, and more if you work out. Leave a water bottle by your bedside and take a few sips when you wake up, or make a cup of herbal tea before you sit down at your desk. 1 , try adding in something more interesting like lemon juice.
Sneak in more fiber
Fiber is the material in plant-based foods our body’s can’t digest. For a long time, scientists thought of it as junk. 2 . In plants, fiber acts like a capsule for the nutrients the body uses, like sugar and fat, making it harder for our body to absorb them. So when we eat fiber-rich food, our body can absorb those nutrients more slowly and feel full for longer.
3
It’s easy, fun and, as an added bonus, may have health benefits. People who cook at home tend to have better overall health and closer personal relationships. To maximize its positive effects, take the time to enjoy meals. This means sharing the food with your family or enjoying the dishes you’ve prepared for yourself. 4 .
Enjoy the food
5 . Otherwise, they won’t be sustainable. Don’t force yourself to drink water when you want a soda. Don’t force yourself to eat vegetables you dislike. Don’t expect yourself to cook meals if you come home exhausted. If the way you’re eating leaves you stressed, it isn’t good for your health, is it?
A.Cook more at home
B.If plain water bores you
C.Take the time to enjoy meals
D.Once you are extremely thirsty
E.Currently, we know it’s essential
F.Changes you make should lift your spirits

Writing a poem is about observing the world within or around you. A poem can be about anything, from love to loss to the rusty gate at the old farm. With the right approach, you can write a poem that you can be proud to share with others in the class or with your friends.
Use concrete imagery. 1 you could always try to describe something using the five senses: smell, taste, touch, sight, and sound. Using concrete imagery will immerse your reader in the world of your poem and make images come alive for them.
Include literary devices. Literary devices like metaphor and simile add variety and depth to your poetry. Using these devices can make your poem stand out to your reader. 2 Try to use literary devices throughout your poem, varying them so you do not use only metaphors or only similes in your writing. Take alliteration(头韵)as an example. It occurs when you use words in quick sequence that begin with the same letter, such as “Lucy let her luck linger.” 3
Avoid cliches(陈词滥调). Your poetry will be much stronger if you avoid cliches, which are phrases that have become so familiar they have lost their meaning. 4 . If you feel a certain phrase or image will be too familiar to your reader, replace it with a more unique phrase.
5 Poetry is made to be read out loud and you should write your poem with a focus on how it sounds on the page. It will allow you to play with the structure of your poem and your word choice. Notice how each line of your poem flows into one another and how placing one word next to another creates a certain sound.
A.Write for the ear.

As you wake up, whether naturally or through your alarm, pause for a few seconds. 2 It may be a photograph of someone you love, your stylish new bedside table, or just being alive and being offered a new day. Take in the positivity and bathe in it for a few moments before continuing your day.
Exhale(呼出) your tension. If you feel anxious or stressed as you wake up, take a few minutes to do an exercise to deal with the tension. Stand tall and bring both hands to your chest. Inhale, and then exhale as you open your arms and reach down to touch the floor. This will stretch your body and oxygenate your brain. 3
Check in with yourself. On your way to work, take a minute to “check in” with yourself. Think through your goals for the day. 4 Allow yourself to feel the positivity associated with those achievements. This visualization exercise is a simple way to build positive intention, create focus, and boost your motivation and confidence for the day.

5.前文“Don’t forget your physical health. Being physically active is a great way to reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.( 不要忘记你的身体健康。积极锻炼身体是减少焦虑和压力的好方法。)”讲述积极锻炼身体是缓解焦虑的好方法,后文“讲述”,因此推断D项“确保每天都有体育锻炼。”符合语境,呼应前文提到的“积极锻炼身体”。故选D。
Passage 8
As the UK prepares for cold winds and snow, it’s time to dig out the winter wardrobe. But while we’re putting on warm clothes, 1 British brand Joules has teamed up with cleaning expert Sarah Dempsey to dish out some top tips on coat care.
Surprisingly, a study by Joules found that 20 per cent of Brits only give their coats a wash once annually. 2 Sarah isn’t shocked though; she knows coat cleaning can be tricky.
3 We should consider the material, colour, fibre content, how frequently we wear it and how it’s been stored since it was last worn. As we tend to wear layers in the winter and our coats are the outermost layer, they will be affected by the weather, getting wet in the rain, and picking up pollutants and dirt through wear over the season.
4 For wool coats, Sarah suggests one cleaning session per season, which can be done when you bring your coat out for winter. She explains, “Wool is described as a self-cleaning material as it contains keratin (角蛋白), which kills odour-causing bacteria. If your wool coat gets wet, make sure to air dry it thoroughly or it will end up smelling musty.”
Leather coats, on the other hand, may require two cleanings each season and a wipe-down between professional cleans. Leather can easily be damaged by a build-up of dirt and pollutants, so it needs to be cleaned more regularly. 5 According to Sarah, for best grade leather, a simple wipe down with a cloth and some detergent (洗涤剂) should be enough.
A.She suggests dividing it into several steps.
B.She advises that it depend on several factors.
C.what methods can we use to clean these warmers?
D.how often should we be washing these winter warmers?
E.The type of leather can also affect how you clean your coat.
F.Even more shocking, 17 per cent admit they never wash their coats at all.
G.When it comes to cleaning your coat, the frequency will depend on the fabric.
【答案】1.D 2.F 3.B 4.G 5.E

Passage 1
Jessica Nabongo longs to set foot in every nation. She started traveling at age four, along with her parents on family trips from Detroit, Michigan and completed her mission when she landed in the Seychelles, having visited 195 countries. 1 Along the way, she became a writer, photographer, and passionate advocate for inclusive and ethical tourism.
Here she talks to us about her experience and tips for traveling better.
What inspires your adventures?
2 I have a strong desire to see the differences and similarities in how people live everywhere in the world, even at home in the United States.
Did you ever experience any obstacles (阻碍)?
I don’t believe in failure. 3 Embarrassment isn’t a natural human personality, in my eyes — it comes from socialization. If I fell over in the middle of Grand Central Station, I’d laugh at myself. I firmly believe that every failure in your life is just an opportunity to learn.
4
My mother has always said “humble (使谦逊) yourself”. I appreciate it because when you travel, depending on your passport, depending on your social class, depending on so many different things, you can go to places with a lot of ego (自我), or you can humble yourself and know that everyone is equal.
What are some things people can do to travel more sustainably
Single-use plastic is one of the biggest things harming Earth right now, so a lot of my focus is on that. 5 If you’re in a restaurant and you don’t have a big appetite, ask for a half portion. It’s about being a deliberate (慎重的) traveler, just taking that extra minute to think how I can have a lower impact on this place that I’m in and on the planet in general.
A.But it’s not just about the country count.
B.I believe failure is the mother of success.
C.Curiosity — that’s what’s always inspired me.
D.What did you depend on during your travel?
E.What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
F.And I rarely feel embarrassed even in awkward situations.
G.But I also think it’s important to watch how much you waste.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.F 4.E 5.G

Passage 1
At some point in your gardening journey, you’re going to run into a problem: where to store all your seeds. At first, a box will do, but eventually, you’ll realize you need some sort of comprehensive organization system. 1
If you’re not careful, you’ll just continue to increase the number of seeds and grow your library. But if stored too long, some seeds will die. 2 Each winter, I take all my storage boxes out and go through all my seeds. Then, I make sure all envelopes are well-sealed.
It can be heartbreaking to throw out seeds, but the reality is that all seeds have a viability (生存能力) window. For instance, some seeds, like carrot seeds, are viable for as long as three years if stored properly. 3 So if you don’t want to get stuck in spring with seeds that won’t grow or only do so occasionally, test or throw. Beyond viability dates, I also check to ensure the package is in good shape and there’s no dampness.
Soon I’ll be ordering seeds for the spring. 4 Just like going through your closet (衣柜) is a good reminder of how many pairs of jeans you have, this process reminds you that you won’t need to, for instance, order sunflower seeds this year if you’ve owned a lot already.
Responsibly managing seeds involves not only checking how many you have but also properly using them. Seeds belong in the soil, not in a box. 5 Find your local seed library, or list the seeds in a giveaway group.
A.Here are some storage system options.
B.Onion seeds can merely last for one year.
C.The presence of a seed envelope doesn’t mean much.
D.So take time to examine their state on a regular basis.
E.Storage is important because it impacts the life of your seeds.
F.If they are not going to be planted in your garden, donate them.
G.Before I start spending money again, it’s helpful to know what I have.
1.由上文“At first, a box will do, but eventually, you’ll realize you need some sort of comprehensive organization system. (一开始,一个盒子就够了,但最终你会意识到需要某种全面的收纳系统。)”可知,此处需解释为何需要更完善的储存系统,而非直接列出方案。E项Storage is important because it impacts the life of your seeds. 通过“because”点明储存的重要性 —— 直接关系种子活性,为下文“But if stored too long, some seeds will die.(但如果储存时间过长,一些种子会死亡。)”
2.由上文“But if stored too long, some seeds will die. (但如果储存太久,一些种子会失去活性。)”可知,此处需说明应对“种子久存失效”的措施,D项So take time to examine their state on a regular basis.
3.由上文“For instance, some seeds, like carrot seeds, are viable for as long as three years if stored properly. (例如,胡萝卜种子等若储存得当,生存能力可达三年。)”可知,此处需通过对比举例进一步说明种子生存能力的差异,B项Onion seeds can merely last for one year.
4.由上文“Soon I’ll be ordering seeds for the spring. (很快我就要为春天订购种子了。)”可知,此处需说明订购前的准备工作,G项Before I start spending money again, it’s helpful to know what I have.
5.由上文“Seeds belong in the soil, not in a box. (种子属于土壤,而非盒子。)”及下文“Find your local seed library, or list the seeds in a giveaway group. (寻找当地的种子图书馆,或将种子列入赠送清单。)”可知,此处需提出“未使用种子”的处理方式,F项If they are not going to be planted in your garden, donate them.

C.This helps you play with the way your poem sounds.

2 This could be anything from a new language, to practical activities like how to draw, or knitting, or simply a subject you’d like to discover more about—such as astronomy, mythology, or a sport.
Define your goal. Create some motivation by focusing on what you want to achieve, complete, or gain by fulfilling this learning. Knowing what you’re working towards can help you keep on track when it’s tempting to fall back into old habits.
Decide your method of learning. Consider what would be most engaging for you. 3 You could carry a book with you. Like rewards or tracking progress? Perhaps there’s an app for you, such as Duolingo for learning languages. Visual learners? Search for YouTube videos on your subject matter, or a TikTok series.
Create the habit. Try to set aside some time each day for learning. You could put it on your calendar and set a reminder. This is especially useful for hands-on activities. 4 Like going for a walk, washing dishes, or cooking. Another idea is to replace some of your phone-scrolling time with learning.

5 Be aware of not automatically reaching for your phone to check emails or social media as it can put you into a reactive mode rather than keeping your mind clear to choose how you want to go about in your day, and how you intend to respond instead of just reacting to events and people.

4 From even the little things such as getting a new SIM card, to the bigger things such as applying for a visa, everything takes investigation, organization, and implementation — skills which you can easily apply to your professional life!

Passage 2
Here are some simple tips to help you turn your backyard into a garden where you can grow your own fruits and vegetables.
1 Different plants require different soil. For example, carrots and beets like sandier soil, so their roots can spread more easily. Tomatoes need more clay to keep water. Therefore, making sure that your soil is healthy is one of the first things you should do when starting a garden.
Figure out how much sunlight your plants need. 2 If you just eat the leaves from the plant, then it needs less sunlight. If you pick the fruit of the plant, then it needs more sunlight. And the smaller the fruit, the less sunlight the plant needs. 3 Leafy greens, not so much.
Start a garden in pots or containers, or you can build beds. 4 Usually, anything can be a container for your plant wooden boxes, milk crates, old pots or drawers, as long as you can drill holes in the bottom and don’t let water stay there all the time.
You can also build your own containers from wood. Plain white wood, like those sold at gardening stores, is not ideal It will last probably for three years or so, but then it’s going to start to break down. Ideally, make boxes from hard wood 5
A.Select proper wooden boxes.
B.Set the stage with healthy soil.
C.There are simple rules to find it out.
D.These types of wood last longer but they are more expensive.
E.So tomatoes and pumpkins need more sunlight to become ripe.
F.Plants that have fruit often require less sunlight than leafy greens.
G.The decision depends on your preferences, budgets and what you’re growing.
Passage 3
All kinds of pollution and waste are doing harm to the earth. 1 . So everyone can do something to help the environment. Here are a few ideas.
Save energy.
First of all, turn off the unused lights in time and consider using energy-saving light bulbs (灯泡), which can save much electricity. 2 . For example, you can take shorter showers. Also, turning off the tap as you brush your teeth can save much water, too.
3 .
If the place you want to go is not far away, please ride a bike instead of driving a car. Riding seems to be a better choice, because it can help cut down the air pollution. You can also choose public transportation, such as taking a bus or subway.
Say no to waste.
4 . Don’t take more than you can eat. Growing food needs much work. Moreover, get long life out of things you own by taking good care of them. If something is broken, don’t just throw it away. You can try to fix it or use it to make something else.
Use reusable things.
When you go shopping, don’t use a paper gift bag, because it is not environmentally friendly. Disposable (一次性的) plastic and paper bags can pollute oceans and the soil. They are hard to break down. 5

B.Choose green travel

D.Ride a bike to school or work every day
E.A reusable cloth bag will be a wise choice
