第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Recently Oxford Dictionaries released this year's list of new words that due to popular use had made their way into the dictionary; proof of their widespread existence.
Thinglish
Kids find whole sentences difficult, so they have done away with verbs and adjectives completely to communicate using just nouns—via social media platforms. Most parents do point out that teenagers have in fact been communicating in single words for decades, so this doesn't really feel too different.
Dronership
The informal “finders keepers” law that means if a drone (无人机) crash lands in your backyard, then it's yours. Intended to be a response to wayward (任性的) and careless drone operators, governments have refused to make the law official, as they are concerned it will encourage residents to actively try and bring down drones by any means possible.
Spuddite
A person who refuses to learn how to use a potato for lighting. Also known as “starch-enemies”, these individuals are often manufacturers (制造商) of light bulbs, who have seen their market share decrease sharply ever since it was found that potatoes could be used to light homes, offices and even streets. With a potato using 73.3% less energy than an energy saving bulb, it's not hard to see why they'd be that frustrated...

I'm 62 now and always planned to volunteer with older people when I retired. There was such a big gap in the care and support this generation receives and I found the thought heartbreaking—no one should have to feel lonely and stuck at home.
I started volunteering three years ago. My team of volunteers have set up seven groups in our town. We host tea parties for those aged 75 and older who live on their own and regularly provide support, friendship and companionship for the most isolated (孤独的) older people in the community.
Working with my older neighbors is rewarding. To hear their stories and the hardships they have overcome is inspiring. I feel like I'm making a positive difference to the lives of older people by sharing my time with them, helping them stay active and social and making clear to them that they are valued by our community.
As an area coordinator (协调人), I also help recruit (招募) and manage volunteers, without whom the work would be impossible. So many go above and beyond what's asked, offering time, energy and kindness, just because they care. I've found enthusiasm from people making the lives of our older neighbors better, and they are a constant source of inspiration for me.
I've met amazing people from all walks of life. It's the best thing I've ever done that enriched my life. I will keep focusing on reducing loneliness and isolation among the elderly and helping them enjoy the old age they deserve.

Last year, the word to describe much of the rise in food prices would have been “heatflation”, as drought and high temperatures affected crop yields (生产量) around the world, from olive oil in Spain to cabbage in R.O. Korea.
This year, we're facing a different concept. Let's call it “sogflation”. If heatflation refers to price increases as a result of extremely high temperatures, sogflation is born out of extreme precipitation.
A report published in April showed that while Europe experienced the highest number of days with extreme heat stress, it was also one of the wettest periods on record for many places.
Potatoes are at the forefront of sogflation. With just one planting and one harvest per year, the conditions have to be just right. But last autumn poor weather conditions forced harvesting to stop in Europe after just three weeks, as wet soil meant farmers couldn't get crops out of the ground.
Europeans eat among the highest quantity of potatoes per person of any region in the world—about 90 kilograms on average a year. English white potato prices are up 81% year-over-year, an all-time high. In Europe, the Netherlands and Belgium—two key regions that grow processing potatoes for fries—were the worst affected, with Dutch processing potato prices at their highest level recorded for US $397 per metric ton.
It's not just vegetables and grains affected by the wet weather. Livestock (家畜) farmers have seen high death rates in lambs, while dairy cows in affected areas are unable to be turned out on grass reducing milk yields and raising production costs. Food production has always been at the mercy of the elements. But Harry Campbell, a market analyst, said that, as consecutive (连续的) years of bad weather pile up, it's increasingly hard to recover from a poor season.
Supply chains will need to be more flexible and ultimately more complex, to keep food supplies secure at a time when one supplier could be facing floods and another a serious drought.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了极端天气对农作物价格及供应链的影响。
28.What led to “sogflation”?
A.Intense heat.
B.Serious drought.
C.Heavy rainfall.
D.Severe insect damage.
C 解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Let's call it...born out of extreme precipitation.”可知,“湿通胀”是由于强降雨造成的。
29.What was the impact of bad weather on potatoes in Europe?
A.Increased death rate.
B.Delayed new planting.
C.Shorter growth cycle.
D.Shorter harvesting period.
D 解析:细节理解题。根据第四段中的“But last autumn...out of the ground.”可知,糟糕的天气缩短了欧洲土豆的收获期。
30.How will consecutive bad weather influence the food supply?
A.It will lead to an increase in the variety of crops.
B.It will force Europe to rely more on food imports.
C.It will require simpler and more flexible supply chains.
D.It will be harder for crops and related industries to recover.
D 解析:细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“as consecutive years of bad weather...from a poor season”可知,连续恶劣天气对食品供应的影响在于农作物和相关产业恢复困难。
31.What might be a suitable title for the passage?
A.From Drought to Flood
B.Food Shortage on the Way
C.Saying Goodbye to Cheap Chips
D.Extreme Weather and Rising Prices
D 解析:标题归纳题。通读全文,尤其根据第二段可知,文章介绍了极端天气对农作物价格及供应链的影响。因此,D项最适合作文章标题。

On a cold evening, Great Basin slipped out of the shadows and approached what looked like a metal cabinet lying on its side. The raccoon could smell cat food within, but 12 latched (闩住) narrow doors blocked his entry.
So Great Basin jumped on the top and began to fiddle (不停摆弄) with the latches upside down. He quickly opened one of the doors and filled his belly.
Raccoons—renowned for their ability to jimmy their way into locked garbage cans—have long been known for their cleverness. But researchers have little sense of how clever they really are. A study published recently may change that.
Lauren Stanton, an ecologist who was drawn by raccoons' quick ability to adapt to environments, and her colleagues once placed six puzzle boxes in a residential backyard. Puzzle boxes are standard in cognition and behavior studies, where an animal claws, grabs, or fiddles with a single latched door hiding some food. But the scientists designed a new type of box with 24 food-filled compartments (分隔层) rather than the typical single compartment, giving them more data points to see how raccoons might solve new problems.
Cameras revealed some surprises. In one instance, a raccoon pushes a skunk (臭鼬) out of the way to fiddle with a difficult latch, then easily opens it. In another, some raccoons wait near the puzzle box until another raccoon solves it, pushing it aside and getting the reward without any work. In all, about 25% of the raccoons were able to open at least three doors, although that was not as good as the 65% observed in the lab.
Later,Stanton's team increased the difficulty level, introducing a new puzzle with four different types of locks. Again, 25% of the raccoons were successful, demonstrating flexibility in problem-solving.
The findings could help explain how raccoons thrive in urban settings, solving the many “puzzles” of an urban environment, says Blake Morton, an animal behaviorist. “This is wonderful when studies come out like this, because it shows that we can do these studies in the wild, and we should be doing them.”
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了浣熊的聪明才智,特别是它们解决问题的能力,并通过劳伦·斯坦顿的研究来证实这一点。
32.Why did Great Basin make great efforts to fiddle with the latches?
A.To have fun.
B.To access the food inside.

With our already busy lives, finding time to exercise can feel like one more thing on our “to do” list. 36.____________ The answer is “yes”, but it's easier than you think—no matter who you are, or when you like to work out.
37.____________ Many of us have more free time in the morning compared to later in the day, and it may therefore be easier for us to stick to a morning workout routine. A 2010 study conducted by the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports found that participants who exercised in the morning, increased their physical activity throughout the day, were less distracted by food, and slept better. Exercising on an empty stomach before breakfast could burn more fat and increase metabolism (新陈代谢) too.
So, good news for early birds, but what if you're not a morning person? Working out in the afternoon or evening also has benefits, just different ones. 38.____________ Also, in the afternoon and evening, your reaction time is quickest, and your heart rate and blood pressure are lowest, which reduce your chance of injury while improving performance.
But does any of this change depend on whether you're a man or a woman? Our bodies are different, after all, so the best time to exercise may be different. A 2022 study from Skidmore College, New York, looked at exactly this question and the results showed that there are some differences. 39.____________ Exercise in the morning. Want to improve your heart health and you're a man? Evening is better for you. But, ultimately, the study found that there are clear benefits for both sexes to exercising at either time of day.
So what time is best? 40.____________
A.So does your amount of exercise count?
B.Want to lose weight and be more charming?
C.There are clear benefits to exercising in the morning.
D.It seems the answer is: whatever time is best for you!
E.Want to reduce your blood pressure and you're a woman?
F.For example, your body's ability to perform peaks in the afternoon.
G.So could exercising at certain times help maximize our fitness goals?

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Nearly thirty years ago I was a trainee engineer based in Liverpool. I was hundreds of miles from home, but I had a nice place to live in, wasn't overworked, had a good bunch of friends and plenty of money in my pocket.
One Saturday morning I decided to walk into Liverpool city centre and buy myself something. I didn't need anything. I was just going to spend some money! The walk was about four miles and took me through Toxteth, an area which two years later would erupt into rioting, largely because of the poverty of the place.
I stopped in a store to buy myself some sweets for the walk. While I was making up my mind which one to choose, the door opened and in walked this “ragamuffin (邋遢的人)”. It looked like she might have been four years old at the most. She was wearing a summer dress and sandals (凉鞋) even though it was a bitterly cold day, and she was not clean.
She walked up to the counter, reached up and placed a fifty pence coin on the glass. Then, she proudly announced that she had saved this up for her little brother's birthday and she wanted to buy him a teddy bear and she wanted that one there. The woman behind the counter told the little girl the teddy bear cost more than 50 pence. The girl tried another one, and another one, and another one.
By this time I had been keeping an eye on this. I knew that none of the bears could be bought for 50 pence. I also knew that I could easily buy the best bear there with the money I was going to waste that day, but did I want to encourage a little girl to take money from strangers?
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
While I hesitated, the girl announced to the world, “Oh well, I'll just give him my bear then.”___________________________________________________________

“Excuse me,” I called out, holding the wrapped bear in my hands.________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
While I hesitated, the girl announced to the world, “Oh well, I'll just give him my bear then.” Her voice was tinged with disappointment, but also with a sense of resolve. She had come prepared to make her brother's birthday special, and she wasn't about to let a little thing like money stand in her way. As I watched her, I realized that her generosity and love for her brother far outshone any material possession I could buy that day.
“Excuse me,” I called out, holding the wrapped bear in my hands. The little girl turned to look at me, her eyes widening in surprise. “I couldn't help but overhear your conversation. This bear here,” I said, gesturing to the bear I had just purchased, “is a gift from me to you, so you can give it to your brother for his birthday.” The girl's face lit up with joy, and she eagerly accepted the bear, thanking me profusely. As I left the store, I felt a sense of fulfillment that far exceeded any shopping spree could have provided. In that moment, I realized that sometimes, the simplest acts of kindness can have the greatest impact.
