Mel Taylor-Bessent has had a passion for reading and writing stories since she was a child. After doing a creative writing degree at university, she set up Little Star Writing—after-school creative writing clubs, which she ran for many years. She went on to interview hundreds of authors for her website, called Authorfy, before becoming a children's author herself.
Her latest book, Race to Imagination Island, is the first step in an exciting adventure series exploring the unlimited power of our imaginations. Taylor-Bessent says writing for fun is vital for fueling children's creativity and dreams and everyone needs imagination.
She enjoyed creating her own stories from a very young age. “In school, I was the writing kid,” she says. “I just loved escaping into a story.” After reading a National Literacy Trust (NLT) report that said fewer and fewer children were writing for pure enjoyment, Taylor-Bessent decided to launch her social media channel, which offers top tips for children on how to enjoy creative writing, simply for fun.
Making a special writing atmosphere is a great way to start your writing tour. “Create a fun writing environment, play some music, grab a blanket, find a cosy corner,” she says, adding that when you start writing, don't worry about perfect spelling, punctuation and handwriting. Just let your ideas flow. “Our writing will improve if we play with our words,” she says. “Write about what you enjoy.” You could even invite a friend to write with you for “twice the ideas, twice the imagination and twice the fun”.
Taylor-Bessent encourages all children to try creative writing, saying, “There is no such thing as a wrong idea. Writing will take you anywhere you want to go and your imagination is limitless.”

Building with 3D printing technology is arousing widespread interest in the construction industry. Besides reducing waste and our impact on the environment, it can speed up construction from weeks, or months, to days. Projects that use simple raw materials like soil, straw, and even salt, can be built in a small part of the time and cost of traditional construction.
Walls are built up layer by layer using an industrial 3D building printer. Construction waste is minimized and, because the printers are mobile like small cranes, they can be set up quickly where they are needed. Home design can be customized (定制) easily, giving architects more creative freedom.
Companies use recycled products and eco-friendly cements to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and make building more sustainable. By using a range of simple, readily available or even waste materials like plastic in the mix, the technology makes the companies then reduce the chance of materials being unavailable or too costly.
Most construction uses conventional methods, but 3D printing is growing steadily. The technology is changing the world around us.
Researchers at the Swiss University ETH Zurich used concrete 3D printing to build the 16-metre-long curved Striatus footbridge. The project only used 500 layers of concrete and 53 blocks with holes to fix the bridge. This reduces materials by up to 70 percent, and the entire bridge can be ground down and recycled.
African island state Madagascar is hosting one of the world's most forward-thinking school building projects. Non-profit Thinking Huts is using 3D printing technology to provide schools where children have little or no access to education. Schools are built using local materials and low carbon concrete under a week. Beehive-inspired designs allow buildings to be easily expanded, and each school will include gardens built into the walls and solar panels on the roof for power.

When it comes to extreme weather, hailstorms (雹暴) “tend to get an unbalanced share of the attention,” says Victor Gensini, a meteorologist at Northern Illinois University.
Yet hailstorms total cars, destroy roofs and devastate crops, costing the United States $46 billion in 2023—representing 60% to 80% of the losses from hail, tornadoes, wind, and lightning-caused fires combined, according to an insurance institute. So it's no surprise U.S. hail scientists are frustrated that their last major research campaign took place in the late 1970s. “It's just this big gaping hole,” says Becky Adams-Selin, a hail scientist at Atmospheric and Environmental Research.
A project called the In-situ Collaborative Experiment for the Collection of Hail in the Plains—ICECHIP, for short—is set up to change that. Led by Adams-Selin, ICECHIP researchers hope to gather data that could improve hailstorm prediction and help answer fundamental questions, such as how climate change will affect the frequency of hailstorms and the size of the stones.
The campaign will rely on technologies new to hail research, such as high-speed videography, drone imagery, and mobile radar, for example. Researchers will also use balloons to deliver 3D-printed spherical sensors into storms to imitate the movement of hailstones. A fleet of 24 ground-based sensors will measure the energy of falling hailstones every 500th of a second, and 3D laser scanners will record collected hailstones' intricate shapes. Back in the lab, ICECHIP researchers will analyze hailstones' ice layers to determine the temperature and altitude at which they formed—and, in turn, the paths they took through storms.
“Such tools will bring hail research into the 21st century,” says Julian Brimelow, a meteorologist and executive director of Canada's Northern Hail Project, a research group involved in ICECHIP. But some technologies from the 1970s will remain, such as hail pads: Pieces of foam topped with aluminum foil to catch hailstones and provide outlines of their sizes and shapes.

One possible version:
Do I Need AI as a Student?
Today, I'd like to share my view that as students, we don't really need AI.
First, while AI seems like a convenient source of information, it may undermine our ability to think independently. When we encounter a difficult problem, instead of racking our brains to find solutions, we tend to turn to AI for ready answers, which will be detrimental to the development of our critical thinking skills.
Secondly, AI poses a threat to our academic integrity. Some students may be tempted to use AI to complete their assignments. Once this habit takes root, it not only violates the principles of education but also fails to truly measure our knowledge and abilities.
In conclusion, let's rely on our own efforts to learn and grow.
Thank you!
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Kindergarten Grandma
Helen entered my life after a parent approached me and asked if I would consider having a grandparent volunteer in my kindergarten class. My answer was an immediate yes.
As a teacher, I tried to make the classroom feel like a family. Many children did not have grandparents or had ones who lived far away, so I thought this was a wonderful opportunity for children to be taken care of by an older adult. I introduced her to the class by the name Grandma Helen.
I was not quite certain what to expect when Helen first came to us. I had imagined a little old lady, possibly weak, who would read and spend time with the children. Little did I know that Helen would walk into the classroom with a spring in her step and light in her eyes. She said she was available up to three days a week for about four hours. She was anxious to help in any way she could.
Helen's enthusiasm and energy level were so high that I would joke that if we ran a race, she would win. She was agile (敏捷的), getting up and down from those little kindergarten chairs even though “grown-up” chairs were available.
The children were attracted by her right away. It turned out that she did not want to read to groups of children, but really enjoyed sitting at learning stations while children were working. There they would talk and she would make note of their questions and concerns. Not all children were able to focus and finish their work on time, so she helped the ones who needed a little extra guidance. She had endless patience helping a child called Bob learn to cut with scissors.
Wintertime always brought the battle of the coats and boots. The children had about twenty to thirty minutes of outside activities but they always had trouble dealing with the zippers (拉链) on their jackets.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Then Grandma Helen helped zip their jackets when they went out.____________

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Then Grandma Helen helped zip their jackets when they went out. When they came inside, there were always a few stuck in their coats when their jackets got caught in their zippers. She would patiently lift the offending coats over their heads and work to loose the zippers. One day this even happened to me. After playing with the children in the open air, I went back to the classroom only to find my coat was caught in the zipper, too. Seeing this, some children as well as Grandma Helen came up to help.
When Grandma Helen was handling my zippers, the children looked curiously. Some wanted to help but didn't know what to do. Then Bob walked away and when he returned, there was a pair of scissors in his hands, saying he could use them to cut out my zippers. Hearing this, we couldn't help laughing. What a pleasant time we were having together! Then every day, I looked forward to Grandma Helen's cheerful presence and the children eagerly waved to her from their tables when she walked through the door. The classroom really felt like a family.
