Failure isn't the end, unless you let it be. Don't believe me? Here are four people who lived through failure before going on to become names known around the world.
Walt Disney
Disney began his career by being fired by a newspaper for not being creative enough. Later, his cartoons were rejected because they were considered to be “too scary for women”.Also, The Three Little Pigs was turned down because it only had four characters. Thankfully, we have the Disney Company today because Disney chose not to listen to any of his critics and chose to press forward towards his dreams.
Stephen King
King is a best-selling writer whose work has been made into several motion pictures. However, his first work was rejected 30 times, which led to King throwing it in the trash. Thankfully, his wife persuaded him to keep working at it, and—from that poor start—Carrie was born.
Milton Hershey
The man who blessed us with the sweet milk chocolate treat we all love wasn't a hit the first time around. He once worked for a local candy factory. But when he went out on his own, he failed miserably. Then he returned to the family farm and perfected the art of making delicious milk chocolate candy, which we enjoy today.
Theodor Geisel
This author struggled to write a novel that publishing companies would call “pure rubbish” several times—27 to be exact. The man just wouldn't quit, though. One fateful night, he ran into an old friend who was a children's literature editor. The friend agreed to publish Geisel's work. Better known today as Dr. Seuss, Geisel was never again called a failure after his first book became a hit.

Throughout all the events in my life, one in particular sticks out more than the others. As I reflect on this significant event, a smile spreads across my face. As I think of Shanda, I feel loved and grateful.
It was my twelfth year of dancing, and I thought it would end up like any other year: stuck in emptiness, forgotten and without the belief of any teacher or friend that I really had the potential to achieve greatness.
However, I met Shanda, a young, talented choreographer (编舞者).She influenced me to work to the best of my ability, pushed me to keep going when I wanted to give up, encouraged me and showed me the real importance of dancing. Throughout our hard work, not only did my ability to dance grow, but my friendship with Shanda grew as well.
With the end of the year came our showtime. As I walked to a backstage filled with other dancers, I hoped for a good performance that would prove my improvement. I waited anxiously for my turn. Finally, after what seemed like days, the loudspeaker announced my name. Butterflies filled my stomach as I took trembling steps onto the big lighted stage. But,with the determination to succeed and eagerness to live up to Shanda's expectations for me,I began to dance. All my troubles and nerves went away as I danced my whole heart out.
As I walked up to the judge to receive my first place shining gold trophy (奖杯), I realised that dance was not about becoming the best. It was about loving dance for dance itself, a getaway from all my problems in the world. Shanda showed me that you could let everything go and just dance what you feel at that moment. After all the doubts that people had in me,I believed in myself and did not care what others thought. Thanks to Shanda, dance became more than a love of mine, but a passion.

Hard work really does pay off. Scientists find that perseverance leads to better grades and higher achievements in school.
“Being passionate is not enough to ensure academic success,” say researchers, who think of “courage” as a key to success. This is also regarded as effort in reaching long-term goals, and determination to continue one's efforts in spite of hardships.
Researchers think that the finding could help create new training to help children develop the skill and help ensure their future success.
Researchers from the Academy of Finland studied more than 2,000 students from Helsinki. They were followed through their academic career from 12 to 16,the sixth grade until the ninth grade in local school years. Researchers found that the factor that best predicts courage was related to goals, with previous academic achievements playing no role in developing the skill.
Professor Katariina Salmela-Aro,who led the study, said,“Courage means a young person is really interested in his or her studies and does not give up easily. A key element of courage is high perseverance when one is faced with difficulties and hardships. The important finding is that these factors are the key to success and well-being. Our study shows the power of courage.”
Professor Salmela-Aro also thinks it is important to develop new practices and qualities to improve courage in teenagers. She added,“Young people should see everyday school work as part of their life in a broader context and establish achievable goals for themselves. Schools must also serve as a place where it is safe to fail and learn to deal with setbacks. One must not be discouraged by setbacks, but draw strength and new energy from them.”
28.What can we learn about the research?
A. It takes at least three years. B. It helps students make progress.
C. It meets many difficulties. D. It follows 2,000 students abroad.
29.What should students do according to the researchers?
A. Focus on former grades. B. Achieve their dreams.
C. Try all their best. D. Forget sadness.
30.What does the underlined word “setbacks” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Strengths. B. Difficulties. C. Weaknesses. D. Efforts.
31.Which is the passage probably taken from?
A. A picture book. B. A literature book.
C. A geography textbook. D. An educational magazine.

Personal growth doesn't necessarily only happen when the conditions are perfect. Seeds tend to develop only when conditions are right. A seed will remain dormant (休眠) until moisture (湿度) and temperature are favorable for growth. Unfortunately, as humans, we don't always have the luxury of growing when conditions are just right. Sometimes you must cultivate(促进) personal growth and flower where you're planted, often in spite of external circumstances.
For much of my life,I let external circumstances control my happiness. If things weren't going well, then I wasn't well. I told myself that I would be happier if conditions were right. With this mindset,I gave myself permission to stay emotionally dormant. I was waiting for things around me to change before I would do the work to become a better version of myself. In other words,I made my personal growth conditional on external circumstances.
The problem with waiting for change outside of yourself is that you might have to wait a very long time, maybe even forever. And if you stay dormant while waiting, you aren't growing. You're simply stuck in place. You certainly aren't becoming the better version of yourself that you want to be.
If you want to engage in personal growth, like planting seeds, you have to do some work to make it happen. You can't wait around for everything to fall into place. Start with pulling up your emotional weeds. Examine yourself and remove the pessimistic thoughts and behaviors that are holding you back. Then, work on the foundation that you have. Practice positive life habits that build your self-respect and happiness.
Personal growth is something you can fight for. It may not come naturally, but when you develop this mindset, you will flower no matter where you're planted.
32.What is the author's purpose in writing the first paragraph?
A. To stress the importance of personal effort in growth.
B. To complain about the lack of perfect conditions.
C. To highlight the influence of external circumstances.
D. To compare human development and seed growth.
33.Which of the following affected the author's growth most in the past?
A. Personal experiences. B. Outside influence.
