When Sherrie and Michael Lloyd first got married, they had nine credit cards between them, and they were heavily in debt. Six years later, this southern California couple are debtfree with a healthy savings. Here's how the Lloyds managed this remarkable turnaround.
After signing up for a sixweek class called Financial Peace—they found it through their church; it's based on the bestselling Dave Ramsey's Complete Guide to Money—the Lloyds were inspired to take charge. Sherrie says the class taught her to see that “you can't use your money for the future when it's tied to the past.”
Using Ramsey's financial principles, they first saved up $1,000 for an emergency fund. Then they consolidated their nine credit cards down to two and employed Ramsey's “snowball” approach by paying off their smallest debts first before dealing with the larger amounts. Their final—and toughest—step was to transfer their remaining debt—$18,000—onto one interestfree card and then give themselves an 18month deadline to pay it off. It might be more doable than you think.
The effectiveness of the Lloyds' financial plan came from their ability to see progress right away. By paying off $1,000 in credit card debt per month, Sherrie and Michael could actually see the debt going down. They also solved their problem as a team.“In a marriage, you're in it together—both working towards a solution together,” Sherrie says.
To make this happen, they had to give up a few trips. It also meant saying no to certain luxuries, like eating out and going to the movies or amusement parks.“Know what's important to you. For us, it was important to figure out our goals and pay off debts,”Sherrie says. She quotes one of Ramsey's bits of wisdom:“Adults make a plan and stick to it, and children just do whatever they feel like doing.”

The human being is a “social animal”, as Aristotle suggested. We have a basic need to be included. Not enough social connection can have a bad effect on both our mental and physical health.
Over the past several years, my workmates and I conducted 13 experiments about 1,980 people. We asked them to think about either experiential purchases (buying experiences) or material (物质) purchases (buying materials) they had made and then rate their thoughts and feelings about those purchases. In some of our studies, people reported feeling more connected to someone who had made the same experiential purchase than to someone who had made the same material purchase. This shows the fact that experiential purchases are more central to a person's identity. When people buy the same kind of experience, they feel more alike and connected because they believe these experiences show more about one's true sense of self.
Knowing that someone else has a better thing than what you have can make you feel more distant from them. However, we find that this feeling is not strong when it comes to experiences compared to material goods.
Moreover, we found that people who were asked to think about an experience they bought were more likely to choose social activities when deciding how to spend their free time. On the other hand, those who were asked to think about things they bought preferred solitary activities.
Experiences bring us together and give us memories of those connections that we can look back on. These memories, in turn, can encourage people to take part in more social activities. After the money is spent and the experience is over, purchases of experiences continue to strengthen the relationships they help build.
Our research also points to another important conclusion: communities could benefit greatly from promoting activities based on shared experiences. Policymakers (政策制定者) can help by making public spaces like parks, beaches, and museums more accessible. Therefore, people can come together and build stronger connections.

28.What strengthens people's connection according to the experiments?( )
A.The sense of responsibility.
B.The purchase of the same goods.
C.The intention of being connected.
D.The recognition of each other's identity.
D 解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“In some of our studies...show more about one's true sense of self.”可推知,对彼此身份的认同,即因购买相同体验而产生的对真实自我的共同展现,加强了人们之间的联系。

A.Interesting.
B.Separate.
C.Important.
D.Traditional.
30.What can be inferred about the experiential purchase from paragraph 5?( )

B.Its importance is widely known.

The plot of the story of The Million Pound Bank Note centers on the impossibility of cashing a high valued bank note by a common man. Within this story it is narrated that only two such notes were ever issued and anyone who walks into a bank to cash that note will get himself in trouble. So,do such million pound bank notes really exist? Let's do a bit of digging around for the purpose of satisfying the curiosity over this question.
Such high valued pound bank notes do exist, and they were usually used for transactions (交易) within banks. The Bank of England used “one million” and “hundred million” pound bank notes to keep parity (等价) with bank notes issued by Scottish and Northern Irish banks. These notes—the one million ones were called “giants” and came in A5 size and the hundred million ones were called “titans” having an A4 size—were more like IOU documents (legal forms that describe a loan between a lender and a borrower) and they were special issues from the Bank of England to meet the requirement of backing the value of everyday notes issued by banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Nine such one million pound notes were issued in connection with the Marshall Plan(the US's postwar aid program to Western Europe),equal to the loan from the US after World War Ⅱ(WWⅡ) in 1948.After cancellation, of these nine only seven were destroyed and two survived with private collectors. Such high valued notes are not usually found in the normal transactional scenes and it is believed that notes worth eight billion pounds were printed in these heavy denominations (面额) in total.
Mark Twain can create humor from narrations of unrealistic and often funny simple situations and The Million Pound Bank Note is a nice example of his storytelling abilities.

Dear_Miss_Evans,
I was wondering if you could guide us to revise a short play adapted from our English textbook.
The story, The Million Pound Bank Note, is about the adventure of a poor young man who was given a millionpound bank note by two rich gentlemen. When adapting the play, we met some difficulties. Could you kindly give us guidance on two aspects? Firstly, we hope that you can check the use of the language for us. Secondly, please give us some direction on our acting and tones.
Would it be possible for us to meet in our classroom at 5 p.m. this Friday? We are looking forward to your reply.
Yours_sincerely,
Li_Hua
第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On the first day of school, I stared in awe at the huge buildings. This high school was definitely bigger than the one I had previously attended.
This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in St. Louis. I had decided the night before that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were socalled“popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I even bought a new outfit and had my hair styled just so the first day would be perfect.
Scared, yet anxious to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs to the front door. The halls were packed with kids yelling and laughing and telling stories of their summer adventures. My first class was geometry, but where was that?
I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked,“Are you new? You look lost. Do you need help? My name is Diane. What's yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names, I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite conversation the whole way. When we reached my room, she said,“Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK, and I hope your day goes all right.”
I said thanks and waved goodbye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I decided that this guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right next to him. I said,“Hi, my name is Lisa and I'm new here.”He said,“Johnny.”
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked,“I'm not sure where my next class is, could you help me?” __________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
Just at that time, someone came up and tapped me on the shoulder. _____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked,“I'm not sure where my next class is, could you help me?”With a frown, he looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom. As they were walking out, I heard him say,“Did you guys see that new girl trying to get into our group? That outfit was too strange.”They all laughed and some of them turned around and stared at me. My face hot with shame, I stood stockstill, not believing what had just happened.
Just at that time, someone came up and tapped me on the shoulder. It was Diane. Like a ray of sunshine, the big smile on her face swept away my gloom. I struggled to hold my feelings back and told her what I had encountered. A gleam of concern in her eyes, she said she was sorry to hear that and offered to find my next class. At that moment I realized how wrong I was in wanting to only be friends with popular people. Maybe I shouldn't decide whether a person is worth being my friend or not by their reputation, but by who they are.
