I’m Kate. Like many people in the UK, I grew up with a very narrow understanding of health. If I felt anxious or tired, I just kept going. If I had a headache, I took painkillers. There was very little thought given to why symptoms appeared or how to live in a way that might prevent them from happening. It wasn’t until my early thirties, while working in a high-stress advertising job, that everything caught up with me. I was completely burnt out.
One of the most alarming symptoms I was experiencing at the time was unusual heartbeats — loud uneven throbs (跳动) that shook my chest every few minutes. I went to the hospital and was told doctors could do nothing, except to keep an eye on it in case it caused problems later in life. There was no mention of emotional tension. No questions about how I was dealing with stress. That was the moment I turned to acupuncture (针灸).
I didn’t know much about it, but something about it felt right. And that first treatment marked the beginning of a deep and lasting change. Through acupuncture treatments, I found a kind of calm I hadn’t experienced in years. My mind cleared, my body felt stronger, and those frightening heartbeats became less and less noticeable. I had discovered a whole new way of seeing health and life.
That experience sparked my interest. I began reading everything I could about acupuncture: not just the practical benefits, but the basic philosophy. I discovered that Chinese medicine is more of a way of understanding ourselves and the world. It teaches that our health isn’t something to hand over to someone else to fix. It’s something to respect and tend to every day, through our food, our emotional lives, our ability to respond to stress, and our relationship with nature and the seasons.
4. How did Kate treat health issues early on?
A. Ignoring the root causes. B. Taking painkillers regularly.
C. Stopping work when feeling tired. D. Keeping a healthy lifestyle.
5. What made Kate turn to acupuncture?
A. Her heartbeats becoming more frequent. B. Doctors’ advice to keep an eye on it.
C. Her high-stress advertising job. D. Doctors’ failure to address her stress.
6. What happened to Kate after her first acupuncture?
A. She lost trust in doctors. B. She loved reading acupuncture books.
C. She experienced inner peace. D. Her heartbeats returned to normal.
7. What does Kate think of Chinese medicine?
A. It tries to reveal mental factors. B. It offers a new way to understand life.
C. It works better than Western medicine. D. It requires daily food control.
A 5. D 6. C 7. B

Many educators have been teaching themselves how to use AI. For Jerome Ong, a 5th grade teacher in Ridgewood, New Jersey, AI has changed the way he approaches teaching. He now uses AI tools every week in his classroom. “You have to find what works for your students,” he said. Ong not only teaches his students what AI is, but also where it falls short. “If you keep at it and say, ‘No, you’re wrong, you’re wrong,’ eventually AI will say, ‘I’m sorry, I was wrong.’ Doing that with your class can show you that AI isn’t really as smart as you think it is,” Ong said.
This summer, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic announced a first-of-its-kind plan to train hundreds of thousands of members of the American Federation of Teachers. “I think if we’re going to make AI work for students and kids, we need to listen to teachers,” said Microsoft president Brad Smith. The $23 million investment will go toward virtual and in-person training in New York City.
“The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced by new technologies, but if we learn how to use them, set practical guidelines and put teachers in the driver’s seat, teaching and learning can be better,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten.
However, critics cite cheating concerns and Microsoft’s own research, which showed a self-reported reduction in critical thinking skills when AI was not used responsibly. AFT member Lois Weiner thinks teachers would be better served by more support within schools than by a partnership with Silicon Valley. “There is so much boredom in the job, but the answer to that is to improve teachers’ working conditions,” said Weiner, adding that AI does not achieve better work conditions for teachers.
Smith argued education should be left to teachers: “Those of us in the tech field need to provide the tools and help school boards, districts, and teachers so they decide how to put those tools into practice.”
8. What do the underlined words “falls short” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Is wrong. B. Has limitations.
C. Is not enough. D. Fails to work.
9. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. Teachers are urged to listen to students. B. Microsoft will invest $23 million in NYC.
C. Tech companies plan to train teachers. D. Three firms aim to promote AI in schools.
10. What can be inferred from Lois Weiner’s comments?
A. AI can help reduce teachers’ boredom. B. Partnership with tech firms benefits teachers.
C. Teachers are smarter than AI. D. Teachers need more support within schools.
11. What is Brad Smith’s attitude towards AI in education?
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.
B 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据第一段中“Ong not only teaches his students what AI is, but also where it falls short. “If you keep at it and say, ‘No, you’re wrong, you’re wrong,’ eventually AI will say, ‘I’m sorry, I was wrong.’ Doing that with your class can show you that AI isn’t really as smart as you think it is,” Ong said.(Ong不仅教他的学生什么是人工智能,还教它falls short。“如果你一直坚持说,‘不,你错了,你错了,’最终人工智能会说,‘对不起,我错了。’在课堂上这样做可以让你知道,人工智能并不像你想象的那么聪明,”Ong说。)”可知,Ong不仅教他的学生什么是人工智能,还教它的局限性,此处falls short“有局限性”。故选B。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“This summer, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic announced a first-of-its-kind plan to train hundreds of thousands of members of the American Federation of Teachers.(今年夏天,微软、OpenAI和Anthropic宣布了一项前所未有的计划,将培训美国教师联合会的数十万名成员。)”
根据倒数第二段中“AFT member Lois Weiner thinks teachers would be better served by more support within schools than by a partnership with Silicon Valley.(美国教师联合会成员Lois Weiner认为,与硅谷的合作相比,学校内部给予教师更多的支持对教师更有利。)”
根据最后一段中“Smith argued education should be left to teachers: “Those of us in the tech field need to provide the tools and help school boards, districts, and teachers so they decide how to put those tools into practice.”(Smith认为教育应该留给教师:“我们这些科技领域的人需要提供工具,帮助学校董事会、学区和教师,让他们决定如何将这些工具付诸实践。”)” 故选A。
D
As a writing teacher, I am used to reading and responding to difficult texts. In fact, I like dealing with texts that have interesting ideas, because I understand their value. I have learned through my years of education that what eventually appeals to me is not just grammatically-perfect, smooth writing, but writing that forces me to think beyond the page. It is writing where the writer has challenged himself or herself and then offered that challenge to the reader.
You will often come across critical thinking and analysis as requirements for tasks in writing and upper-level courses across different subjects. Instructors have different explanations of what they actually require from you, but, in general, they expect you to respond thoughtfully to the texts you read. The first thing you should remember is not to be afraid of critical thinking. It does not mean that you have to criticize the text, oppose its basic idea, or attack the writer simply because you feel you have to. Criticism is the process of responding to and judging ideas, arguments, and style so that readers understand how and why you value them.
Critical thinking is also a process that is key to all subjects. While in this passage I refer mainly to critical thinking in writing, the general principles behind critical thinking are very similar in other fields. In history, for instance, it could mean examining and analyzing primary sources to understand the background in which they were written. In the hard sciences, it usually involves making judgments and decisions rationally (理性地), and solving problems.
While critical thinking may be subject-specific, most of its general principles such as thinking rationally, making independent judgments, and having a healthy doubt about what is being read, are common to all subjects. No matter the area of study, using critical thinking skills leads to clear, flexible thinking and a better understanding of the subject at hand.
12. Why does the author prefer certain texts?
A. They are error-free in grammar. B. They present exciting viewpoints.
C. They make readers reflective. D. They read smoothly and easily.
13. What is critical thinking according to the author?
A. Challenging the author’s viewpoint. B. Considering and assessing thoughts.
C. Rejecting the text’s main argument. D. Finding fault with the writing.
14. How does the author explain that critical thinking matters across all subjects?
A. By referring to different areas of study. B. By describing what it means in history.
C. By explaining its role in science. D. By drawing comparisons between fields.
15. What might be discussed in the follow-up text?
A. Types of critical thinking. B. Uses of deep thinking.
C. Benefits of critical thinking. D. Methods of thinking critically.
C 13. B 14. A 15. D
根据第一段中“In fact, I like dealing with texts that have interesting ideas, because I understand their value. I have learned through my years of education that what eventually appeals to me is not just grammatically-perfect, smooth writing, but writing that forces me to think beyond the page. It is writing where the writer has challenged himself or herself and then offered that challenge to the reader. (事实上,我偏爱解读观点新颖深刻的文章,因为我深知其价值。多年教育让我明白:真正打动我的,从来不止是语法无误、文笔流畅的文字,而是能启发我跳出文本、深度思考的作品。这类创作,是作者先挑战自我,再将这份思辨感传递给读者。)”可知,作者更喜欢能促使读者思考的文本,也就是让读者有反思性的文本。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Criticism is the process of responding to and judging ideas, arguments, and style so that readers understand how and why you value them. (批判是对观点、论点和风格做出回应和判断的过程,以便读者理解你如何以及为什么重视它们。)”可知,批判性思维是考虑和评估想法的过程。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“While in this passage I refer mainly to critical thinking in writing, the general principles behind critical thinking are very similar in other fields. In history, for instance, it could mean examining and analyzing primary sources to understand the background in which they were written. In the hard sciences, it usually involves making judgments and decisions rationally (理性地), and solving problems. (虽然在这篇文章中我主要指的是写作中的批判性思维,但批判性思维背后的基本原则在其他领域也非常相似。例如,在历史领域,它可能意味着检查和分析原始资料,以了解它们所写的背景。在硬科学领域,它通常涉及理性地做出判断和决策,并解决问题。)”可知,作者通过提及不同研究领域来解释批判性思维在所有学科中的重要性。故选A。
文章前三段主要介绍了批判性思维是什么以及它在不同学科中的重要性,最后一段提到“No matter the area of study, using critical thinking skills leads to clear, flexible thinking and a better understanding of the subject at hand. (无论研究领域如何,使用批判性思维技能都会带来清晰、灵活的思维,以及对当前主题更好的理解。)”,接下来可能会讨论如何进行批判性思考,即批判性思维的方法。故选D。

【答案】参考范文
Reject Seat-Occupying: Our Shared Responsibility
Dear fellow students,
I am Li Hua. I’m writing to address a common issue: seat-occupying in our dormitory study rooms.
It’s common to see books, bags, or water bottles left on desks by students who are nowhere to be found. This selfish behavior wastes valuable study space and leaves many students in need unable to find a seat.
Such actions not only disrupt the fair use of our shared resources but also harm our study efficiency. To ensure a fair and productive environment for everyone, we should only occupy seats when we are actually present and studying.
Let’s take action together to respect shared resources and create a better study environment for all.
Thank you.

Unlike many other residents who often complained about noise from neighbors, Lucy enjoyed a quiet life for a long time. The elderly couple downstairs moved to their son’s city years ago, and her upstairs neighbor Kevin was kind. He never played loud music at night or held get-togethers with friends late into the night. Over time, Lucy got used to this peaceful life.
One day, Kevin told Lucy that his company would send him to work in Singapore for two years. To avoid leaving the house empty, he decided to rent it out. The new tenant (租户) was Jacky. On the day Jacky moved in, Lucy met him at the hall. After a short talk, Lucy learned he was her new upstairs neighbor. However, she couldn’t help noticing Jacky’s dyed hair, as well as the tattoos (文身) on his arms. Immediately, she thought of characters like him in movies, who were usually portrayed as bad guys.
Jacky’s arrival soon broke Lucy’s quiet life. Every night after 10 o’clock, she could hear him playing the guitar and singing into a microphone. On weekends, he even invited friends to his house for parties. Having had enough of the noise, Lucy wanted to go upstairs and ask Jacky to keep quiet, but she was afraid he would turn a deaf ear. She also thought about calling the police, but worried that he might take revenge (报复). After all, in movies, many people with tattoos were shown as bad guys.
Lucy put up with Jacky for a week, feeling exhausted every day. One morning, she saw Jacky and several other residents running in the community. Suddenly, a young boy fell to the ground and fainted. Jacky noticed it at once, stopped running, and rushed to the boy. He quickly gave the boy CPR (心肺复苏) and told Lucy to call the emergency hotline. Thanks to Jacky’s timely help, the boy was eventually out of danger.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
After this incident, Lucy realized she might have misunderstood Jacky.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Gathering her courage, Lucy decided to go upstairs.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After this incident, Lucy realized she might have misunderstood Jacky. She felt ashamed of judging him solely by his appearance. His dyed hair and tattoos were no indication that he was a bad person; on the contrary, he proved to be decisive, brave, and kind enough to rescue the boy just in time. The noisy guitar playing and parties no longer annoyed her as much as before — she even began to view them as part of a young man’s dynamic life. Regretting her previous hesitation and prejudice, she knew she should have communicated with Jacky instead of making pointless assumptions.
Gathering her courage, Lucy decided to go upstairs. Knocking gently on Jacky’s door, she held a plate of homemade cookies. When Jacky opened the door, he looked surprised but greeted her warmly. Lucy apologized for her earlier prejudice and thanked him for saving the boy. She also politely mentioned the noise. Feeling sorry, Jacky promised to keep the noise down after 10 o’clock. From then on, they became friendly neighbors, a perfect example showing that one should never judge a person by their looks.

A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.
