Grammar and Vocabulary (每题1分;共20分) Section A Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. Things To Do When Moving House There’s a lot to remember when it comes to moving into your new home — from all the big physical stuff right down to the small bits of paperwork — so it’s no wonder that there are some things that get left behind. Never forget to label the boxes This might sound like an obvious one 1 when you’re rushing, little things like labelling a box can easily be forgotten. And although it seems like a small mistake 2 (make), the impact it can have on your move at the other end can be quite a big one. Use the correct packing materials Not using the right packing materials can lead to the fragile items 3 (damage). Boxes that aren’t strong enough for their contents can easily collapse under their weight, or bin bags of clothes can tear open leaving your items 4 (litter) all over the floor and at worst broken or damaged. Another common issue is using boxes that previously contained food stuff that leave a nasty odour(气味) on your belongings if they have picked 5 up from their original contents! Take what you need and leave out the unneeded ones 6 you eventually get into the swing of packing, it can be hard to stop - and while that’s good, it’s also bad if you end up getting carried away and packing things you might need on the day of the move. This problem compounds if you have ‘helpers’ packing with you 7 don’t know what you want to take with you. Plan to avoid moving on a Friday 8 the temptation that you could have the whole weekend to sort your home out, Fridays are busy days for removal companies so you might end up paying a higher price or struggling to find an available mover. The other risk of moving on a Friday is if anything goes wrong, many solicitors or estate agents are closed over the weekend meaning sometimes problems 9 (not resolve) until the following week, this can mean unplanned costs. Inform people about your move You’ve completed the most challenging part by moving from A to B, but what remains uncertain is how many people who need to know you’ve moved house actually do. 10 you should visit the Post Office and fill in a form to redirect all mail starting from your move date is strongly advisable. 1.but 2.to make 3.being damaged 4.littered 5.it 6.Once 7.who/that 8.Despite 9.won’t be resolved 10.That 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 故填but。 2. 故填to make。 3. 故填being damaged。 4. 故填it。 6. 故填who或that。 8. 故填won’t be resolved。 10. That。 Section B Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Activists said they were conveying a powerful message — art cannot exist on a(n) 11 planet. When Georgia B.Smith recently walked into the Metropolitan Museum of Art on June 24, she felt nervous. The 34-year-old wasn’t there to admire 18th-century paintings alongside New York City’s summer tourists; with red marker on her hands and black tape on her mouth, she was there to voice her 12 concerns. Smith is part of a growing climate activist movement whose 13 center art and museums. Since at least May 2022, environmentalists with groups like Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion have been using cake, soup, paint, and glue to capture the attention of museum visitors. Each time, their message is simple: there is no art on a dead planet. But these climate activists say they have no interest in damaging art. Instead, they want to raise awareness about the climate 14 and attract new members. “The function of art is for people to be able to understand the world that they live in and reflect on the human condition, but big art doesn’t 15 that function,” Mukhopadhyay said. “That’s the reason for us to be in museums: to tell people that we are in the middle of a crisis, and it is the time now for you to face that crisis.” Climate change is also itself a(n) 16 to art: Leading cultural institutions, the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, 17 in a June report the need for “immediate action” to address climate change given how it puts cultural heritage sites, art collections, and institutions at risk. Museums, however, say these behaviors are attacks on 18 artworks. One survey published in November of last year suggested public support of climate protests may drop after demonstrations such as pretending to spoil art. A larger set of data suggest the art museum protests might be a(n) 19 call to action, though it’s too early to tell. Dylan Bugden, an assistant professor of environmental sociology at Washington State University, researches the way people 20 social movements. “When we talk about climate change activism and social movement strategy, what really matters is not a one-off protest event and catching people’s attention here and there,” Bugden said. “It’s building grassroots activism and organizations that can mobilize people to vote, to protest, to take action. Building that kind of association is what it will take to do something about climate change.” 【答案】 11.C 12.AB 13.BD 14.A 15.D 16.BC 17.ABC 18.B 19.CD 20.AD 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 作定语从句主语,根据后文“center art and museums”以及上文“with red marker on her hands and black tape on her mouth, she was there to voice her _______ concerns.”可知此处指“抗议活动”,用名词protest,结合“part of a growing climate activist movement”可知,此处表复数含义,用复数protests,故选BD。 14. 作宾语,结合上文“there is no art on a dead planet”以及“these climate activists”可知,此处指“气候危机”,名词emergency“危机”与climate构成“气候危机”,符合文意,故选A。 15. 根据上文“The function of art is for people to be able to understand the world that they live in and reflect on the human condition”以及“but”可知,大型艺术作品并没有履行让人们能够理解他们生活的世界并反思人类的生存状况这一功能,doesn’t后跟动词原形,作谓语,fulfill“履行”为动词,符合句意。故填D。 16. 作定语,结合上文“They threw paint and food on the glass exterior protecting famous paintings.” 在定语从句中作谓语,动词interpret“解读”与“the way people...” AD。 II. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. Claiming the moral high ground doesn’t necessarily make you good Here’s something that’s surprisingly common: people who strongly champion moral or noble ideals, but regularly use them to justify attacking and mistreating others — something that is surely neither moral nor noble. Isn’t this inconsistent? How can someone loudly insist they’ re a good person while behaving in ways that totally 21 this? There are many psychological and neurological processes that allow people to engage in this behaviour that we’ll call ‘virtue bullying’. Research finds our brains work hard to preserve, and enhance, our self-esteem, which is largely influenced by our relative social status. A 2011 study found that an effective way to 22 our self-esteem is to attack others, so our status becomes relatively higher. So, thinking you’ re good while attacking others can be sadly a very 23 process. For humans, our morals are a key aspect of our self-image and self-worth, and an important facet in our motivation and decision-making. We’re innately 24 of our identities and decision-making. If these things are 25 by morals and beliefs, we’ll be subconsciously hostile to anyone who poses a threat to them. This can lead to what seems to be inconsistent behaviours. People may 26 think “Being kind and good to others is important”, but their subconscious says, “And anyone who disagrees is a good 27 .” Hence, we get virtue bullying. Human brains are also hard-wired to crave fairness and justice. These have a strong subjective component, 28 , meaning our understanding of fairness and justice, and our morals, are 29 by experience, the world around us, and the people we relate to. All in all, striving to be good should be applauded and encouraged, especially because the human brain is still running on millions-of-years-old programming that gifts us with many subconscious 30 and prejudices. It requires constant vigilance (警戒) and effort to stick to your moral values in the face of your 31 instincts. And it’s only human to 32 . But when you do, you end up thinking “I’m a good person, but I did something bad”. This can lead to the 33 , where your actions and thinking don’t match up. Ultimately, for all the explanations offered here, it really should be acknowledged that some people are just... not nice. To the extent that they’d use some morally praiseworthy goal or belief as a fig leaf to 34 cruel and bullying tendencies. How you deal with such people is up to you. A When 47-year-old volunteer Susan Boyle stepped on to the stage of Britain’s Got Talent and announced she was unemployed, had never been married and “never been kissed, actually”, few in the audience would have wondered why. This Ms. Boyle, looking unfashionable, from a village in Scotland, shocked the three judges and the audience with the song I Dreamed a Dream from the musical Les Miserables on a show of Britain’s Got Talent, one of the hottest reality shows in Britain. She couldn’t hide the awkwardness when walking to the center of the stage in a house dress, and everyone — including the judges — seemed laughing at her when she said she wanted to be as successful as Elaine Paige. As soon as she began singing, however, everyone present fell silent, then rose within seconds to applaud her incredible voice as the celebrity judges sat open-mouthed, and remained standing to the end. After her performance, one of the judges Piers Morgan said, “Without doubt that was the biggest surprise I’ve had in three years of this show. When you stood there everyone was laughing at you. No one is laughing now. That was amazing.” Actress Amanda Holden followed, “I am so thrilled because I know that everybody was against you. I honestly think that we were all being cynical (愤世嫉俗的) and I think that’s the biggest wake-up call ever.” Susan obviously won over the hearts of millions around the world with sensation spreading across the Atlantic. Hollywood actors Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, who between them have nearly 1.5 million followers, speak highly of her. Kutcher even posted a link to the video clips. The Scottish talent made her live American appearance via satellite connection on CBS’s The Early Show, doing an interview and singing live from her room. And she already accepted an invitation from talk show host Oprah Winfrey. Now Boyle has become one of the world’s hottest celebrities. The video clip of her performance has been viewed more than 50 million times on YouTube, becoming a hit on the Internet. If widely applied, the method could increase the heart donor pool by an estimated 30 per cent. “If we could snap our fingers and just get people to use this, I think it probably would go up even more than that,” said Dr Jacob Schroder, a transplant surgeon at the Duke University School of Medicine. “This really should be the standard of care.” Most transplanted hearts come from brain-dead donors who’ve died due to a complete loss of brain activity, rather than circulatory death (循环衰竭死亡), in which the heart stops. A brain-dead patient can be declared dead before their heart stops beating, and this allows doctors to remove the heart while it’s still perfused with oxygen-rich blood, and therefore not yet damaged by a lack of oxygen. The heart is then washed with a preservation solution, placed in an ice-filled cooler and rushed to its recipient (接受者). In the recent trial results, doctors compared the survival rates of transplant recipients who got hearts from brain-dead donors with the survival rates of those who got hearts from donors who’d died of circulatory death. A total of 166 US-based heart transplant patients were included in the primary analysis, 86 in the brain death group and 80 in the circulatory-death group. Six months post-surgery, the brain-death group had a 90 per cent survival rate and the circulatory-death group had a 94 per cent survival rate, suggesting that donation after circulatory death, or DCD, is an equally feasible approach to heart transplants. DCD is made possible by extracorporeal (体外的) machine perfusion, which involves hooking up the donor organ to a machine that pumps blood and nutrients through its tissues. The new trial tested a perfusion system called Organ Care System Heart, made by TransMedics, the trial’s funder. The system warms the blood that it pumps through the donor hearts, as compared with other perfusion systems, which still require the organ be cooled as part of the preservation process. Although the two groups had similar survival rates at six months, compared with the traditional heart transplant group, the DCD group had slightly higher rates of moderate to severe primary graft dysfunction (原发性移植器官功能不良), in which one or both of the heart’s ventricles (心室) show dangerous dysfunction within 24 hours of the transplantation surgery. However, none of the DCD patients had primary graft failure that resulted in retransplantation, while two people in the traditional transplant group did. Overall, the rate of serious negative events was very low and similar in both groups, as assessed out to 30 days post-surgery. The new trial involved multiple medical centres and builds upon previous evidence in favour of DCD, which mostly drew from isolated cases and small trials performed at single centres in Australia and the United Kingdom. 43.Why is Dr Jacob Schroder in favour of the new approach to collecting hearts? A.‘Reanimating’ organ donors’ hearts work much better. B.The new approach standardizes the traditional routine. C.The sources of donated hearts will be greatly enriched. D.Patients widely apply for the approval of the approach. 44.The underlined word “perfused” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________. A.spread through B.portioned evenly C.perceived lacking D.draining off swiftly 45.How does a ‘reanimated’ heart compare with one from a brain-dead donor? A.A ‘reanimated’ heart doesn’t need to be cooled while the other does. B.The heart from brain-dead donors is more likely to suffer dysfunction. C.The DCD group has undergone retransplantation due to heart failure. D.Similar percentage of patients survive post-surgically at six months. 46.Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A.A Debate on the Conventional and Novel Approaches B.‘Reanimated’ Hearts Can Be Successfully Transplanted C.DCD — a Medical Breakthrough with Perfect Effects D.Standard Heart Transplantation Proves Unparalleled 【答案】43.C 44.A 45.D 46.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第一段中“If widely applied, the method could increase the heart donor pool by an estimated 30 per cent. (如果这种方法得到广泛应用,估计可以使心脏供体库增加30%。)”和Jacob Schroder博士所说的话“If we could snap our fingers and just get people to use this, I think it probably would go up even more than that (如果我们打个响指就能让人们使用它,我认为它可能会上升得更多)”可知,Jacob Schroder博士支持新方法是因为它能显著增加心脏供体来源。故选C项。 44. 根据画线词的上文“A brain-dead patient can be declared dead before their heart stops beating (一个脑死亡的病人可以在心脏停止跳动之前被宣布死亡)”和下文“and therefore not yet damaged by a lack of oxygen (因此还没有因为缺氧而受损)”可知,脑死亡供体被拆除心脏前,心脏仍在跳动,没有缺氧。 故选A项。 45. 根据第三段中“Six months post-surgery, the brain-death group had a 90 per cent survival rate and the circulatory-death group had a 94 per cent survival rate, suggesting that donation after circulatory death, or DCD, is an equally feasible approach to heart transplants. (术后6个月,脑死亡组的存活率为90%,循环死亡组的存活率为94%,这表明循环死亡后捐赠,或者说DCD,是心脏移植同样可行的方法。)”和最后一段中“Although the two groups had similar survival rates at six months (尽管两组在六个月时的存活率相似)”可知,两种心脏移植后患者术后6个月存活率相近。故选D项。 46. 通读全文,尤其是第一段中“A method for “reanimating” organ donors’ hearts works just as well as the standard approach to collecting hearts for transplantation, new trial data shows. Section C Directions: Read the following passages. We live in an era of unprecedented information growth. Downloading all available data today would take over 180 million years, with over 1 trillion megabytes of new information generated daily. Despite this abundance and the rise of artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, significant innovation has stalled since the Age of Insight over 120 years ago. 47 Innovation, whether large or small, begins with a new idea—a moment of insight. These insights emerge when our brains forge new connections between existing and new information, fueling creativity across fields like finance, marketing, politics, writing, and production. Within organizations, insights are vital for learning, training, coaching, and driving change, shaping how we perceive and interact with the world. To accelerate innovation, we must increase both the quantity and quality of insights. Research shows that insights arise from subtle signals just below conscious awareness. Practices like taking breaks or avoiding distractions from social media can enhance the likelihood of these moments. 48 Creating space for reflection is essential to fostering more insights. Beyond quantity, improving the quality of insights is crucial. Evaluating and sorting ideas can be challenging without clear methods. 49 Level 5 insights—marked by intense emotions, motivation, and lasting impact—hold the greatest significance. For example, a Level 1 insight might occur casually and fade quickly, while a Level 5 insight, such as a career-changing realization, can profoundly alter one’s life. The scale evaluates five elements: emotions, motivation, memory advantage, aftershocks, and subsequent ideas. 50 By applying it, organizations can refine communication, marketing, and learning strategies. Testing messaging approaches with the scale helps identify ideas that generate strong insights, increasing action and information sharing among customers. In short, insights drive innovation and address challenges. By nurturing these moments of connection, we unlock potential for growth and change. A.However, the constant flood of alerts and content from technology makes finding quiet contemplation increasingly difficult. B.Insights are essential for engagement, innovation, and behavior change, making the Eureka Scale valuable for assessing organizational performance. C.Similarly, effective learning and leadership initiatives can be measured for their impact on participant growth. D.Today, we are often overwhelmed by the sheer volume of data, struggling to identify which ideas can drive meaningful progress and address society’s greatest challenges E.The Eureka Scale offers a way to value and foster insights, propelling engagement, innovation, and behavior change. Summary Writing (10分) 51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Is renting clothes greener than buying them? Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting green shoppers. But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline investigated this question and concluded that it’s not as sustainable as it seems. Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented — receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing. She writes, “An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way, and increases up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By comparison, the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from a physical store and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi’s.” Then there’s the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it’s returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and polluting process. All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene (氯乙烯), a carcinogenic (致癌的) air pollutant that is still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with hydrocarbon alternatives, although these aren’t great either. Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it’s so easily accessible. There’s something called “share washing” that makes people engage in more wasteful behaviors precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, advertised as “a way to share rides and limit car ownership.” and yet “it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation use.” Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldn’t let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. There’s an even better step—and that’s wearing what is already in the closet. Despite a rising market for renting clothes, some research shows it’s not necessarily environmentally-friendly. Renting involves larger carbon emissions from two-way transportation of clothing and pollution caused by washing. Also, people tend to waste due to the easy access to rental services with a false belief that sharing goes green. Therefore, it’s wiser to wear what’s already in our wardrobe. Building that kind of association is what it will take to do something about climate change.” II. Reading Comprehension (21 – 35题,每题1分;36 – 50题,每题2分;共45分) Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. C A method for “reanimating” organ donors’ hearts works just as well as the standard approach to collecting hearts for transplantation, new trial data shows. A.A Debate on the Conventional and Novel Approaches B.‘Reanimated’ Hearts Can Be Successfully Transplanted C.DCD — a Medical Breakthrough with Perfect Effects D.Standard Heart Transplantation Proves Unparalleled Section C Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. F.The Eureka Scale, introduced in 2015, provides a five-point framework to measure insight strength. III. IV.
