作文
Protect Elephants
Elephants are amazing animals that live in Africa and Asia. They are huge and strong, with long noses called trunks, big fan-shaped ears and long white tusks.
Elephants have great abilities. They can carry heavy things easily, swim well in water, and have amazing memories to help them find their way easily. They are gentle, smart and friendly to humans, and they usually live in groups.
However, elephants are now in great danger. People cut down forests, so they lose their living places. What's worse, some people hunt them illegally for their ivory, making their numbers drop quickly.
We must take action to protect them. First, governments should make strict laws to stop ivory trade. Second, we should build more nature reserves for them to live safely. Most importantly, we should never buy products made of ivory. Let's work together to save elephants!

The US Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced a warning, saying that Antarctica’s emperor penguins (帝企鹅)are in danger of disappearing because of the rising temperature. The announcement officially calls for protections of emperor penguins under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Antarctica is home to the flightless seabirds. They need sea ice to reproduce, hunt for food and avoid other animals. But warming oceans caused by climate change have harmed the emperor penguins’ sea ice environment. If carbon emissions continue to rise, temperatures will as well, leading to more sea-ice disappearance. This harm could result in the emperor penguins disappearing in the near future.
Climate change has made emperor penguins reproduce less and less. One example is the Halley Bay colony (群) in the Weddell Sea, the second-largest emperor penguin colony in the world. Several years of poor ice conditions in areas around the colony led to the drowning of all newborn emperor penguins beginning in 2016.
The warning is designed to improve international efforts to protect emperor penguins. The action also requires the government to take steps to reduce their threats.
Shaye Wolf is the climate science director Center for the US-based for Biological Diversity. She said emperor penguins need “immediate climate action” in order to survive. “The penguin’s life depends on whether our government takes strong action now to cut climate-heating fossil fuels (化石燃料) and prevent harm to life on Earth,” Wolf said.
26. What can we know about emperor penguins?
A. They are being hunted.
B. They reproduce quickly.
C. They are leaving the polluted ice.
D. They depend on sea ice to survive.
27. As to the reasons why emperor penguins will die out, which of the following is NOT mentioned?
A. The warming oceans. B. The carbon emissions.
C. The disappearance of sea ice. D. The reproduction of other animals.
28. What happened at Halley Bay?
A. No penguins survived there. B. Ice conditions there have gotten terrible.
C. Lots of fossil fuels have been found there. D. All newborn penguins escaped.
29. According to Shaye Wolf, how can we keep emperor penguins alive?
A. By saving as much energy as possible.
B. By slowing down climate change immediately.
C. By making enough ice for emperor penguins.
D. By finding a new way to use fossil fuels.
30. For what purpose does the writer write the passage?
A. To tell people how to protect the climate.
B. To share his opinion on climate change.
C. To introduce emperor penguins’ bad sea ice environment.
D. To ask human to take action to protect emperor penguins.

When it comes to “panda”, we may think of the “giant panda”. In 1869, the giant panda was found in Sichuan, China and soon became popular all over the world. But in fact, before 1869, the word “panda” mostly referred to the “red panda” with reddish-brown fur (毛).The red panda, also known as the lesser panda, mainly lives in the Eastern Himalayas in places like China, Nepal and Bhutan. It belongs to the family Ailuridae (小熊猫科). People thought that it was a member of the bear family at first. But researchers finally grouped the red panda into its own independent family according to DNA research results. The research also showed that the red panda is a close relative to the raccoon (浣熊), but it is not closely related to the giant panda, which belongs to the bear family.
Red pandas are in danger of dying out, according to experts in wildlife protection. The number of red pandas around the world has gone down by half in the last twenty years. The biggest challenge for red pandas is that they are losing their homes because humans are cutting down trees for wood and clearing land for farming. What’s more, some people even catch red pandas to make clothes like hats with their special fur.
There are some events around the world to protect red pandas, but they still need more help. To protect red pandas better, it’s necessary to draw more public attention to them. International Red Panda Day was set up for this reason. It is on the third Saturday of September every year.
There are many things middle school students can do for red pandas. You can read a book or watch a video about these amazing animals, join an International Red Panda Day activity near you, see red pandas at your local zoo and share articles and pictures about red pandas on social media.
31. What can we learn about red pandas?
A. Most red pandas live in China.
B. The lack (缺乏) of food has put them in danger.
C. Grouping them into a family isn’t a simple task.
D. There are many more red pandas than giant pandas in the wild.
32. Which of the following is the most similar in DNA to the red panda?
A. The giant panda. B. The raccoon. C. The bear. D. The fox.
33. How much has the number of red pandas dropped by in the last 20 years?
A. 50%. B. 40%. C. 30%. D. 60%.
34. Why was International Red Panda Day set up?
A. To study red pandas more easily.
B. To celebrate the discovery of red pandas.
C. To make red pandas more popular in zoos.
D. To draw public attention to red panda protection.
35. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. Red pandas and bears belong to the same family.
B. International Red Panda Day only interests adults.
C. More people should take part in red panda protection.
D. Red pandas will die out in the next twenty years from now.

Wild animals are our friends, and they play a key role in keeping the balance of nature. However, more and more animals are becoming endangered nowadays. According to a report, over 28,000 species (物种) are at risk of disappearing forever. The main reasons are habitat loss, illegal hunting, and pollution. For example, elephants are hunted for their ivory, and tigers are killed for their fur.
To protect endangered animals, many countries have set up nature reserves where animals can live safely. Laws have been made to stop illegal hunting and trading of animal products. Also, many organizations are working to raise people’s awareness about animal protection.
We can do our part too: we can refuse to buy products made from endangered animals, reduce pollution, and join volunteer activities to protect them.
As human beings, we should value every life on Earth. Animals are important to nature, and they keep the balance of our planet. If they die out, our world will be less beautiful and less lively. Let's work together to protect wild animals and build a better home for all living things.

第二节 回答问题(本大题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
请阅读下面短文,根据所提供的信息,回答5个问题,要求所写答案语法正确,语义完整切题。

It is 7:00 a.m. at the Siberian Tiger (东北虎) Park in China. The keepers are getting meat ready for the tigers’ breakfast. By 7:30 a.m., the tigers are awake and hungry. They walk around their space and make loud sounds. When they see the keepers, they come close, some even standing up to reach for their food.
Li Ming, a tiger keeper, says, “They are strong and beautiful. I take care of them every day. I wash their cages, feed them, and watch how they act. Each tiger is different. They are very special to me.”
Siberian tigers, are big cats with orange fur and black stripes. They are a symbol of power and nature. But now, they are in danger. Scientists think fewer than 600 wild Siberian tigers live in the world, mostly in Russia (俄罗斯) and China. About 200 more live in zoos.
Why are they in danger?
● Less forest: People cut down trees for wood and farms, so tigers have less space.
● Illegal (非法的) Hunting: Some people kill tigers for their fur and bones.
● Not enough food: Tigers eat deer and small animals like rabbits, but these animals are also disappearing.
● Tigers do not have many babies. A mother tiger usually has 2 or 3 cubs (幼崽) every 2-3 years. Many cubs die young. Adult tigers need a lot of space to find food, but forests are getting smaller.
At the Siberian Tiger Park, workers help tigers have babies and study them. Schools teach kids about tiger protection. The government and other groups are working hard to save these amazing animals. If we keep helping, maybe one day there will be more tigers in the wild again.
21. What time do the Siberian tigers at the park usually wake up?
A. 6:30 a.m. B. 7:00 a.m. C. 7:30 a.m. D. 7:50 a.m.

【参考答案】26. D 27. D 28. B 29. B 30. D

There are many things middle school students can do for red pandas. You can read a book or watch a video about these amazing animals, join an International Red Panda Day activity near you, see red pandas at your local zoo and share articles and pictures about red pandas on social media.
