When David was nine and Laura was twelve, the battles started. Before that, they got along great. Laura was always protective of her little brother, and he in turn was very fond of her.
Maybe it was about needing space or demanding independence. Whatever the reason was, it drove my husband and me crazy. It would start over the smallest of excuses. One minute the house would be quiet, and the next they'd be shouting at one another. And on and on it would go. Until, finally, one of us would have to step in. And there would be a truce (停战) ...sort of. At least until the next fight. Our once happy home was being turned into a war area.
One night, in hopelessness, we called the kids into the living room and told them how upsetting their behaviour was. We asked them for ideas about how we could regain peace in the family.
We asked each of them to come up with a half dozen appropriate results that we could apply the next time they had a fight.
The following day we were presented with a list of results from each. Some even looked pretty good. Examples: Clean the other person's room; Do the dishes for the other person; Hug and make up, etc.
We decided to arrange those results around the edge of a board, and then we attached a spinning arrow (旋转箭头) in the middle. When you gave it a spin, the arrow would finally stop and point to one of the results. Then we hung the board up in the kitchen. We crossed our fingers, and waited.
It was amazing. Just the existence of the board, hanging on our kitchen wall, had an immediate calming effect on the atmosphere in our home. But it only took about ten days before peace was destroyed by another battle. So we called them both into the kitchen.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

We took the board down off the wall and placed it on the table. With heads down, both kids dared not speak, wondering what punishments would land on them. After what seemed hours, Laura broke the ice, “I'm sorry, Mom and Dad, but I really can't stand it, I mean, David's smelly socks and dirty clothes and ...” David cut in angrily, “Huh, who else would leave paints and crayons everywhere? What a torture to clean your room!” It seemed that another war would start. I stopped them, asking hesitantly, “Could we make a change of the board?” “Approval!” they yelled, eyes sparkling with interest. After discussion, we agreed to erase the words from the board but left “Hug and make up”.
In the same spirit, we ended up making boards with other themes. Examples: Keep silent for five minutes; Look in the mirror and smile; Send a handmade gift ... Soon around the edge of the board appeared a dozen appropriate results. We put the board back onto the kitchen wall. In the later months, we changed those words for the better and fresher. Miraculously, with fights and tears getting fewer, our house was filled with hugs and laughter. Action speaks louder or words do wonders? Who knows?
You might be wondering how you can avoid conflict, especially in the workplace, but the better question is: how can you manage it? Conflict is a natural part of life. __1__, you'll see it as an opportunity for change and better communication with others.
Analyze the conflict.
__2__. Workplace conflicts can seem very complicated. But when in reality, there are typically one or two main causes. Think carefully about the situation to find out the central issues at the heart of the conflict.
__3__.
Whether you're directly involved in the conflict or in the middle of a conflict between other people, keep a cool head to ensure the situation doesn't escalate (升级). If you're feeling anxious, consider taking a step back before facing the problem. Conflicts are less likely to be solved reasonably when either side is flooded with emotions.
Separate the person from the problem.
Resolve conflict by focusing on the issue, not the person involved. View the problem as a specific incident or behavior instead of blaming the other person's character as a whole. This makes the conflict feel less personal for both parties, and thus makes it easier to solve. It can also save your relationship with the other people. __4__.
Be an active listener.
Active listening promotes positive, open and respectful communication. In social situations, it can be a powerful tool to ensure you understand what someone else is saying. __5__. Maintain eye contact and focus on them without trying to think of a rebuttal (反驳) while they speak.
A.Stay calm
B.Make a resolution plan
C.Once you know how to solve it
D.If the cause of the conflict isn't obvious
E.Finding out the source of a conflict is the key to solving it
F.Otherwise, you might decide not to work with them anymore
G.So, give the other people time to talk uninterrupted and listen non-judgmentally
1.选C 根据上文“Conflict is a natural part of life.”以及下文“you'll see it as an opportunity for change and better communication with others.”
2.选E 根据上文“Analyze the conflict.”以及下文“Workplace conflicts can seem very complicated. But when in reality, there are typically one or two main causes.”
3.选A 根据下文“Whether you're directly involved in the conflict or in the middle of a conflict between other people, keep a cool head to ensure the situation doesn't escalate (升级).”
4.选F 根据上文“Separate the person from the problem.”以及“This makes the conflict feel less personal for both parties, and thus makes it easier to solve. It can also save your relationship with the other people.”
5.选G 根据上文“Active listening promotes positive, open and respectful communication. In social situations, it can be a powerful tool to ensure you understand what someone else is saying.”以及下文“Maintain eye contact and focus on them without trying to think of a rebuttal (反驳) while they speak.”
