In Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, 58-year-old Guo Yingxiong is breathing new life into Hakka bamboo carving. In his workshops, the bamboo seems to come alive with his skilled hands — everyday scenes unfold, like a tea seller carrying his goods or young lovers sitting by the water. These creations represent more than art. They form a living bridge between the ancient art of Hakka bamboo carving and the modern world that Guo has upheld for over four decades.
Bamboo carving has deep cultural roots. While its origins date back to the Six Dynasties period, the art was well received by people during the Tang Dynasty, before achieving its golden age during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, when scholars praised bamboo for symbolizing strength and honesty.Su Shi of the Song Dynasty wrote that he would rather dine without meat than live without bamboo. Among regional styles, Hakka bamboo carving stood out by mixing traditional calligraphy with creative designs. In 2010, it was listed as a provincial-level intangible (非物质的) cultural heritage in Jiangxi.
Guo's exposure to the art began young — he learned from his father, who taught him strict rules, like using only winter-cut bamboo and memorizing over 50 steps to prepare the material before carving. With tireless practices, he mastered various sculpting techniques, establishing himself as a pioneer in preserving and advancing Jiangxi's carving heritage.
To keep the tradition alive, Guo opened Ganzhou's first Hakka bamboo carving workshop in 2017. There, he made custom pieces and taught students. One of his students, Han Lu, even started studying the craft's history after being inspired by him. Besides, he also created smaller, cheaper items like bamboo bookmarks and mixed traditional skills with modern designs to attract younger people. Through such efforts, he hopes to secure a brighter future for the art, one careful cut at a time.

At Beijing's Palace Museum, it sometimes seems that time stands still, but the clocks keep ticking at a small workshop. This is where Qi Haonan works. As the fourth generation to deal with ancient clocks at the museum, Qi has returned more than 100 timepieces to their former glory.
“Restoring such treasures doesn't mean making them look brand new.Through cleaning and restoration, I try to make the clocks return to their former form, restoring their mechanical and performance functions,” the 43-year-old restorer says.

But reality soon weakened his excitement. There is an apprenticeship rule: For the first year, you can look, but don't touch.“Clock restoration includes too many details.Being in a hurry can do a great deal of damage,” he says.
From 8 a.m.to 5 p.m.every day in the apprenticeship year, Qi did research by checking and taking apart watches and clocks collected from his friends. At the end of the year, he could finally get his hands on a small French clock in the museum. He still remembers the excitement when the hands of the French clock began to move, which took him a month to restore.
“Now I have two apprentices. They both have their unique skills. These skills will make us better at restoring the treasures,” Qi says.

Craftsmanship requires a great deal of time, patience and effort.__9__ Traditionally, craftsmen develop their skills through apprenticeship to those masters of the craft who came before them.Although we don't often work that way in this day and age, there are a few things that we can do to emulate (努力赶上) the process.
Practice every day, design something new, and walk through a tutorial work on a personal project.Whatever it takes to get you working with the tools of your trade each day, do it — because the more you do something, the better (and faster) you become at doing it.__10__
Learn to accept criticism and react appropriately.People have a hard time taking criticism of their work. You put so much effort into a piece. It can be difficult to hear that what you have done is not good enough.__11__ Criticism isn't personal. You and your critics have the same goal — a quality product.
__12__ As I mentioned earlier, this is where all of the difference is made.A true artisan is careful about the details.Take the time to add polish and style to the small things. That can easily go overlooked.Attentiveness to these details raises the quality of our work.
Design for the future.Items that exhibit the quality of craftsmanship are timeless. They are built well, and built to last.__13__ There are always new features in the software we use.People develop new tools that give us more possibilities. But despite the ever-changing face of this industry, it is possible to do work that has longevity.
A.Pay attention to the details.
B.Participate in quality discussion.
C.Trends and costumes change rapidly.
D.Building quality reputations is the key to building craftsmanship.
E.However, nothing will help you improve so much as a critic.
F.Practice is the most important part of developing the quality of craftsmanship.
G.So becoming a real artisan requires your continuous development of your craft.
9.选G 根据上文“Craftsmanship requires a great deal of time, patience and effort.”
11.选E 根据上文“People have a hard ...is not good enough.”
12.选A 根据下文“A true artisan is ...the quality of our work.”
13.选C 上文“Items that exhibit the quality of craftsmanship are timeless. They are built well, and built to last.” 下文“There are always new features in the software we use.”
