For most of us, watching a movie is a pretty common thing to do. But for the blind people who can’t see, it can be very difficult. In Kunming, Yunnan Province, there is a very special theater, Xin Deng Theater (心灯影院). It’s blind-friendly.
More than 5,000 volunteers help at the Xin Deng Theater on weekends. Most of them are university students. Their job is to narrate (讲述) films to blind moviegoers. Before working, volunteers will learn how to tell of a film.
Every Saturday, volunteers will come to the bus stop to pick up the blind and take them to the Xin Deng Theater. Then all the blind will sit down to enjoy a movie together. When the movie begins, a volunteer will give lively narrations. He describes what is happening on the screen, including facial expressions (面部表情), the background and even the clothing. With the help of the narrator, the blind immerse (沉浸) themselves in the movie. They laugh when something funny happens and sigh (叹气) during sad situations.
Volunteers at the Xin Deng Theater help blind moviegoers better enjoy their theater trips. Yifan, one of the volunteers, has narrated more than 20 movies. “I could feel they were enjoying the film. I was so glad that my volunteer work could bring enjoyment to them,” he said. “I felt as though I was shining a light on their lives.”
1.Why is Xin Deng Theater special?
2.How many volunteers help at Xin Deng Theater?
3.How do the volunteers help the blind enjoy the movie?
4.What do you think of the volunteers’ work? What did you do to help others? Write 30 words or more.
My name is Ann. I would like to share my volunteering experience in Sue Ryder. I worked as a volunteer in 2013 because I wanted to do something to help others. I called some charity shops (慈善商店) to ask if they needed volunteers. Although I didn’t mind where I volunteered, I was pleased that one of the Sue Ryder shops said yes. Sue Ryder was a charity very close to my heart because volunteers from Sue Ryder once cared for my dad in the hospital.
Volunteering in the shop helped me know what shop work was like, and I was surprised to find how much I really enjoyed doing it. I also found how important the public (民众) were. Lots of people gave us things they didn’t need for the shops to sell. In this way Sue Ryder raised money to care for people with life-changing illness. I always left the charity shop late, because I knew how important the work of Sue Ryder was.
Another thing I enjoyed about volunteering was talking with other volunteers in the shop. They were friendly and helpful. I really improved my teamwork skills by volunteering.
I worked in the shop from late April to early August. I learned many things from it and I’m sure they will be useful in the future.

Volunteering in your neighborhood gives you a chance to give back. You’ll feel happy that you are volunteering your time.
Teamwork makes the dream work. Working well with others is one of the important qualities (品质) that make a good volunteer. The best volunteers always work comfortably in ever-changing teams with people from all walks of life. They can take on both the leader (领导) and the follower roles in teamwork at different times.
Patience is also one of the most important qualities of a good volunteer, because most charities and organizations may not always move as quickly as we think. It’s important to find volunteers who are glad to be patient and keep doing something.
Many volunteer roles are physically and mentally exhausting (使身心俱疲的) , so make sure your team is ready to do something. Some roles will be more physical than others. It is important to tell the volunteers about that. Don’t forget that one of the surprising good things of volunteering is that it’s good for both physical and mental health.
Volunteers must step out of their comfort zone (舒适区) as they learn new skills and face new problems. They may also be volunteering with vulnerable (脆弱的) members who have experienced a difficult situation. So, it’s important to find volunteers who are kind and do well in their work. An understanding volunteer will play an important part in your team.

Do you know sign language? It is a way of communicating by using hands, faces, and bodies. It helps deaf (聋的) or hard-of-hearing people share their thoughts and feelings easily. There are over 300 different sign languages around the world. Just like spoken languages, each country has its own special way of signing.
Sign language has a long history. Historical records show that deaf people used simple hand signs in ancient times. Known as the “Father of the Deaf”, the Frenchman Charles-Michel de l’Épée played a key role in developing sign language. He opened the world’s first free public school for deaf children. He collected these children’s home signs and made the first sign language dictionary. His ideas later influenced the development of deaf education and sign languages in many countries.
Sign language is more than just a way to communicate. It serves as a bridge to connect people. Every year on 23rd September, we celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages to show the importance of sign language. Today, we can see sign language on TV, in schools, and even in hospitals. Even if we’re not deaf, learning sign language can help us make new friends and communicate with deaf people.
In short, sign language is a powerful communication tool. Why not try learning it? It can open up a new world for us and help us connect with more people.
1.How do deaf people communicate through sign language?
2.How many different sign languages are there in the world?
3.What did Charles-Michel de l’Épée do to develop sign language? (Give two examples.)
4.When is the International Day of Sign Languages?
5.Do you want to learn sign language? Why?
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答下列问题。
Do you use hand gestures when you talk? Do you open your mouth and eyes wide when you are surprised? These are all examples of body language. How important can it be?
Body language does not use words. It uses the movement or position of your body to show certain meanings. According to American scientist Edward T. Hall, in a conversation between two people, 65% of communication is body language. In some cases, you even express yourself without words. For example, if your friend asks you to join him in a picnic, you will give him an “OK” gesture to say “Yes, sounds great!”. Sometimes your words say one thing, but your body language says another. You may do things unconsciously (无意识地), like touching your face while telling a lie.
In different cultures, the same body language means different things. In the US, making eye contact with someone means you are interested in what the person is saying. In some Asian countries, it is rude to look into a person’s eyes during a conversation.
Sometimes, different body language expresses the same meaning. Take “hello” for example. French people kiss on the cheeks (脸颊) to say hello. Japanese people bow. Maoris in New Zealand, however, touch noses in greeting.
In a word, body language is important in daily life. Understanding this language helps you to communicate better with others.
1.What does body language use to show meanings?
2.Do our words and body language always say the same thing?
3.What does an American mean if he makes eye contact with someone?
4.How many ways of saying hello are mentioned in this passage?
5.What do you think of body language? Why?
Do you know how people send messages to each other? Scientists say only 35% of our communication is done through spoken language. The other 65% is done through body language. It is natural for us to use our body to share our thoughts and feelings.
Some of the ways of body language are the same all over the world. For example, smiling may be the easiest body language. People understand its meaning without thinking. So it is good to smile when we meet people. But the meaning of some body language changes from one culture to another. Most people move their heads up and down to mean “yes” and side to side to mean “no”. You may think these have the same meaning all over the world. However, in some countries, such as Sri Lanka and Nepal, they have the opposite meanings. People move their heads side to side to mean “yes” and up and down means “no”.
As we have looked at some examples, there are many kinds of body language and they may be different from one culture to another. If we don’t understand them, we may make mistakes. The best advice is to watch what other people do and follow them.
1.According to scientists, how is 65% of our communication done?
2.What does the underlined word “its” in the second paragraph refer to?
3.In some places, shaking their heads means “No”. Give two examples of these countries.
4.Is it necessary for us to understand the difference of body language?
5.What is the best suggestion when we are in a foreign culture?

How Comics and Animation Change Our Lives
Comics and animation influence our lives in many positive and practical ways.
They can inspire future careers. Some engineers today say they chose their job because they were interested in technology in sci-fi animations. Many artists started their journey by copying characters from their favourite comics. Even writers, designers, and programmers often find their first creative ideas from the stories and worlds in these art forms. This early inspiration can guide their studies and hobbies towards a future job.
They are also powerful learning tools. Educational comics make subjects like science or history fun. Some teachers use short animations to explain difficult ideas in class. For example, a cartoon about the water cycle can help students remember the steps more easily than just reading a textbook. These materials turn learning into a lively experience.
Moreover, they help build communities. Fans meet online or at comic fairs to share their hobbies. They make friends, exchange ideas, and even create fan art together.
However, it’s important to keep a balance. Enjoying comics and animation is great, but too much screen time may affect our eye health and sleep. Remember to take breaks and enjoy other activities too.
1.What can comics and animation inspire in people?
2.How do many artists start creating?
3.Which subjects can educational comics make learning fun?
4.Where do fans meet to share their hobbies?
5.What should you remember to do while enjoying animations?

Over 80 years ago, he first appeared in the cartoon Steamboat Willie. When this cartoon came out in New York on November 18,1928, it was the first cartoon with sound and music. The man behind Mickey was Walt Disney. He became very rich and successful. In the 1930s, he made 87 cartoons with Mickey.
Some people might ask how this cartoon animal became so popular. One of the main reasons is that Mickey was like a common man, but he always tried to face any danger. In his early films, Mickey was unlucky and had many problems such as losing his house or girlfriend, Minnie. However, he was always ready to try his best. People went to the cinema to see the “little man” win. Most of them wanted to be like Mickey.
On November 18,1978, Mickey became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Today’s cartoons are usually not so simple as little Mickey Mouse, but everyone still knows and loves him. Who has a pair of cars more famous than Mickey’s?

Some bright sparks (火花) light up the night sky, creating a fantastic rain of flowers. This exciting performance is Striking Iron Flower (打铁花). It is a traditional folk art form, and it has been around for more than 1,000 years in China. It is deeply rooted (根植) in traditional Chinese culture.
Striking Iron Flower usually takes place during important festivals such as the Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival. People get together to watch this wonderful performance. The blooming (盛放的) sparks are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Striking Iron Flower is a highly skilled performance. To begin with, the performers put waste iron in a big oven. Then, they heat the iron at a very high temperature until it becomes liquid (液体). Finally, they use special tools to splash (泼洒) the liquid iron into the air. When the liquid iron meets the cold air, it will turn into beautiful sparks. The performer must have strong arms and excellent skills. At the same time, performing this art also calls for great courage to make sure every movement is precise (精确的). It shows the spirit of Chinese working people.

“No print, no year” is a well-known saying in Suzhou, Jiangsu province. The “print” here means Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Prints, a special kind of nianhua, or New Year pictures. One of its inheritors (继承人), Sun Yibo, has worked on Taohuawu prints for over 20 years.
“Though seen as a kind of nianhua, Taohuawu Prints not only show the traditional pictures, such as menshen (door gods), flowers and birds,” said Sun. “To keep the traditional craft alive, artists now also choose themes from popular culture, like games and films.”
Such rich themes also mean difficult steps. To make a woodblock New Year picture, artists need to draw the draft (草稿), carve it on different blocks and then make the prints one by one on paper. “Each woodblock New Year picture follows the ‘one color on one carved block’ rule and is made with the colors printed on top of each other,” explained Sun. “How many blocks are needed for a picture? It depends on how many colors there are in the picture. One picture comes from at least two blocks.”
However, getting the right color on the block is never easy. Sun said that when he made a woodblock New Year picture, he printed and adjusted (调节) each color block more than 100 times to get the right look.
Even so, Sun and other inheritors are finding ways to pass down this traditional culture. “We have exhibitions (展览) and courses at a college in Suzhou. Students who are interested in the exhibitions can learn this skill in class,” said Sun.
1.How long has Sun Yibo worked on Taohuawu Prints?
2.What new themes do the prints now show?
3.How many steps are there in making a woodblock New Year picture?
4.Why did Sun print and adjust each color block more than 100 times?
5.According to the passage, why is Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Prints still popular today?

Fengxiang clay figurines are a well-known form of traditional Chinese folk art from Fengxiang County, Shaanxi Province. With a history of thousands of years—dating back to the Neolithic Age, these vivid and colorful sculptures are not only works of art but also an important symbol of Shaanxi’s rich culture, deeply loved by people both at home and abroad.
In the early days, local people used clay to make simple daily tools and objects for worship. As pottery-making skills continued to develop, the art of clay figurine-making slowly took shape. It finally reached its golden age during the Ming and Qing dynasties, becoming popular among common people and widely used in festivals, weddings and other important events to bring joy and good wishes.
Their production process is complex and needs great patience. First, artisans choose high-quality local clay. Next, they knead, pound and filter it to take out impurities (杂质). Then, they shape the clay into lively forms like tigers and historical characters by hand or simple tools. After that, the shaped clay goes through natural drying and high-temperature firing. Finally, the most important step—painting—is carried out, with bold, bright colors to create strong visual contrast.
These clay figurines carry deep cultural meanings. For example, tiger-shaped figurines are believed to drive off evil spirits and bring good luck to families. To protect this valuable traditional art, the local government has set up training centres to teach young people the making skills, while some young artisans are trying new things through mixing traditional styles with modern designs to attract more young people.
1.Where are Fengxiang clay figurines from?
2.When did Fengxiang clay figurines enter their golden age?
3.How many steps are required to make Fengxiang clay figurines?
4.What does the local government do to protect Fengxiang clay figurines?
5.How can you keep traditional arts like Fengxiang clay figurines alive? (自拟一句话回答)
