She had just completed a PhD in Language, Literacy and Learning, and she was analyzing children's access to books in wealthy and low-income communities. One day, she saw something that stopped her in her tracks. “I was at a school in a wealthy community, and they were getting rid of almost brand new books because they didn't have room in the library,” said Constantino. She put the books in her car and drove them to a school in an underserved community. Shocked by the difference she saw in public school libraries, Constantino became determined to bridge the gap. “School libraries are not funded well, and sometimes not funded at all,” said Constantino. “If you're a child in an underserved community, you're left with boring, outdated, and uninteresting books.” The word about Constantino's work was spread, and books began piling up. Today, her non-profit organization, Access Books, has provided more than 1.5 million books to public-school and community libraries across California. The group has also redecorated close to 350 libraries in public schools and homeless shelters. Constantino recruits (招募) volunteers who work alongside the community to create a warm, vibrant (充满生机的) and welcoming library space. Students and their families, as well as school staff and teachers, come together to join in. “We're working together. It's not a gift; it's a partnership. It really builds a sense of community,” said Constantino. In addition to book donations and refurbishing (再装修) libraries, the group offers author visits with schools and holds an annual writers conference for kids. Constantino said, “If we provide high-interest books and a beautiful library space, they do come and they do read. We found that in the schools that we serve, the number of books borrowed increases significantly after our coming. So we know that kids are really interested in the books that we give. My goal is that kids can always have a friend in a book and they can always turn to a book to find comfort and to learn something.” 1.Why did Constantino do the study in 1999? D.They are more willing to read books. 根据最后一段的“We found that ... the books that we give.” B When Ghanaian photojournalist Paul Ninson initially pursued a career in photography, he found the challenge discouraging. “Photography isn't exactly valued as a career in Ghana,” Ninson said. “If you tell your parents you're going to be a photographer, it was like, ‘Yuck, what? Go and be a lawyer.’” But Ninson felt photography was his calling.Deeply influenced by the family history of storytelling passed down through his grandparents and later attracted by a friend's images, he developed a love for photography. He sold his mobile phone, bought a camera and began studying photography. Though Ninson began his journey with commercial (商业的) photography, he soon turned his focus to stories, closer to his heart — those of African history and culture that he would capture as a photojournalist. Ninson still sought formal education in photojournalism.Unable to find a suitable program in Africa, he left Ghana in 2019 to study in New York City. There, he read the center's hundreds of photobooks. In Ghana, he only had access to five or six of such books. As he ventured deeper into the city, he discovered more visual histories of Africa than he had experienced at home, such as documentation of Ghana's first president at the New York Public Library. The libraries Ninson visited were unwilling to give him their archives (档案) to return to Africa, which led to his idea of creating a leading photobook library in Africa that held such stories. This idea has been realized with the creation of the Dikan Center in Accra, Ghana's capital. In Ghanaian artist Daniella Afful's eyes, Dikan Center is the beginning of the growth of Ghana's creative community. “Dikan Center has magnified (放大) art and photography. Dikan Center has kind of given us the hope that we may soon have a music library and we could have a film library in Ghana — anything just to protect our history and make history.” 5.How did Ninson's grandparents affect his career choice? A.They bought a camera for Ninson. B.They carried on the storytelling tradition. C.They asked him to discuss it with his friend. D.They showed many photos of their family. 根据第二段“Deeply influenced by ...love for photography.” B。 6.Why did Ninson go to America? A.He desired for chances to better himself. B.He hunted for more approaches to culture. C.He planned to sell hundreds of photobooks. D.He wanted to return to commercial photography. 根据第四段“Unable to find a suitable program in Africa, he left Ghana in 2019 to study in New York City.” A。 7.Which of the following can best describe Ninson? A.Optimistic and humorous. B.Generous and shy. C.Brave and outgoing. D.Innovative and hard-working. 根据第四段“Unable to find a suitable program in Africa, he left Ghana in 2019 to study in New York City.”可知,他出国深造,这表明了他的努力进取;根据倒数第二段“The libraries Ninson visited ...in Accra, Ghana's capital.” D。 8.What is Daniella Afful's attitude towards Dikan Center? A.Supportive. .Doubtful. C.Unclear. .Negative. 故选A。 Regardless of the weather or the distance, Paul Wilson will make sure low-income students in his neighbourhood arrive at their college classes on time. A retired engineer in his seventies, Wilson has been offering free rides to college students for the past several years. Tina Stern received rides from Wilson for all her four years in college, and the trips meant much more to her than just free 14 . “It's not just a ride; you're not just sitting there in 15 silence or with your headphones on,” Stern said. “He asks you questions and actually remembers the answers, so the next time you ride with him, he'll 16 those things.” Wilson first worked as a driver through a student-support programme of the non-profit organization, On Point for College. Although the 17 asks the members only to drive students to and from their classes, Wilson often goes 18 to ensure the welfare and safety of the students. We started by wiping dust off worn desks, then moved to the yard to weed around the flower beds, from where a chorus of crickets chirped loudly as if cheering us on. After that, we handed out parcels filled with educational supplies — colorful notebooks, sharp pencils, not to mention a few tablets donated by kind-hearted people, which made the kids' eyes light up. Under the shade of an old banyan tree, the village grannies sat chatting, their wrinkles softening into warm smiles. Later, on the small platform by the school gate, we exchanged firm handshakes with the principal, and I felt it a real privilege to bring even a little joy to this place.
