Favorite Books for Young Readers
The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses by Paul Goble
(For ages 5 to 8)
Everywhere you look in The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, there's a tiny, precise and lovely detail — a plant, a bird, a lizard, a shell and of course the great horses. This story of a Plains Indian girl who runs away with a band of wild horses, and eventually becomes one of them, won the Caldecott in 1978.The recognition was well-deserved for its insightful portrayal (描写) of the bond between the human spirit and the wilderness.
Hello Lighthouse by Sophie Blackall
(For ages 4 to 8)
Waves roll by, seasons come and go, keepers tend to their duties, and through it all, the lighthouse stands tall, sending its light out into the darkness, signaling hello to all the ships at sea.The Caldecott winner Sophie Blackall does a significant job showing the timeless nature of lighthouse life — and the change that's coming.
The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander and Kadir Nelson
(For ages 6 to 9)
One of the most — if not the most — beautiful books on this list.Kadir Nelson's fancy, photorealistic paintings pair with Kwame Alexander's powerful words for a tribute (致敬) to decades of Black brilliance, pain and perseverance.“This is one of those texts that really spoke to me; it was beautifully written and I felt it was a really great pairing of words and pictures of an author and an artist,” Nelson said.
Harlem by Walter and Christopher
(For ages 9 and up)
This poem by Walter Dean Myers — a revered elder of children's literature — celebrates Harlem, where he grew up, full of “colors loud enough to be heard” and songs first heard in the villages of “Ghana/Mali/Senegal”.His son Christopher's vivid illustrations, part paint and part collage (拼贴画), don't talk down to kids, instead pulling them into a lively city.

Jules Verne, the “Father of Science Fiction”, lived in the era of steamships and telegraphs, but was able to imagine technologies that wouldn't be invented for over a century. Reading Verne's novels made me wonder how he was able to predict so much and write so technically when he wasn't a trained scientist, physicist or engineer. How did he do it?
Like a lot of people, Verne's parents had their own ideas about his future. They had their hearts set on Verne becoming a lawyer. He knew he wanted to be a writer, but played along and went to school to become a lawyer like his father.
Verne was mostly pretending to study law in Paris while holing up in the National Library of France and digging into articles on discoveries in geology and science. Eventually, he came clean with his family that he wanted to write in a new genre (体裁) that combined travel and science.
While he studied scientific journals and let all of the age's cutting-edge discoveries feed the fires of his imagination, Verne surrounded himself with people who could be useful for his writing.
His brother was a naval officer, and Verne would often ask him to double-check what he had written about ships and maritime travel. He also asked his cousin, a math professor, to look at his equations (等式) and a mining engineer friend to help him with physics, according to author Walter James Miller, who wrote annotations (评注) to Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
“He predicted a lot of things that have happened, but that's because he was reading a lot and talking with people who knew what was going on in the world around him, so why should we be surprised?” according to Rosalind Williams, a historian at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “It wasn't magic. He was just paying attention to things,” she said.

Writers of science fiction often feel more prescient (预知的) than others.Whether it's the architectural and social dystopias of J.G.Ballard's novels, or the world of E.M.Forster's The Machine Stops, the genre is full of prescient writers dealing with ever more familiar issues.
Out of all such writers, few seem more likely to predict our times than author Philip K.Dick.In a remarkably 30-year period of work, Dick authored 44 novels and countless short stories, adaptations of which redefined science fiction on screen — in particular Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, based on Dick's story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall, which took his 1966 short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale as its source material.
Dick had an astonishing ability to predict what would happen in modern world.Celebrated science-fiction and fantasy author Stan Nicholls suggested Dick's work was prescient because it explored the future through the then-present.“His stories foresaw the availability of the Internet, virtual reality, facial recognition software, driverless cars and 3D printing,” Nicholls said — while also pointing out that “it's a misinterpretation that prediction is the primary purpose of science fiction. The genre's hit rate is actually not very good in that respect.Like all the best science fictions, his stories weren't really about the future; they were about the here and now.”
Putting aside Dick's ability to foresee the future we now take for granted, his most disturbing vision was of the world itself ultimately being a simulation (模拟).Dick's reality was already a delicate and complex one.In many of his later books, the idea of reality being a facade (假象) grew as a dominant theme.“Dick argued we were existing in a simulation,” Nicholls suggested.
Whether his visions were true, as he believed, a product of small problems in the simulation or his fading mental health, one thing is for certain: the world in which the work of Philip K.Dick is celebrated today feels ever closer to the ones imagined by this most unique and exceptional writer.

Buried in ash after Vesuvius' eruption, hundreds of scrolls (卷轴) have kept their secrets hidden for centuries. But archaeologists (考古学家) have now been able to reveal some of the ancient text with the help of artificial intelligence.
Discovered in the ruins of a villa, the Herculaneum scrolls are a collection of around 1,000 scrolls, along with other relics. In earlier times, many people tried to unlock the secrets of scrolls but in vain, mainly because most of them were fragile (易碎的) and would shatter into pieces if unrolled.
Until now, the only way to read what's inside the scrolls is to put together the thousands of pieces, which may take 500 years to reveal their content.Fortunately, a team led by professor Seales had already pioneered a way to “virtually unwrap” an ancient scroll using X-ray tomography (断层成像技术).But that was not enough to read the barely visible ink on the ancient documents. The chemistry of the ink from the ancient world is different from that of medieval times. It's largely invisible to the naked eye even when caught by the X-ray.
In 2019, they did come up with a solution based on artificial intelligence to “see” the ink, but it needed much data.So they launched the Vesuvius Challenge to accelerate the work and released software and thousands of 3D X-ray images of pieces and two rolled-up scrolls, in the hope that global research groups would take up the challenge.
In the end, a team of three students shared the grand prize. They could read 2,000 letters from the scroll after training machine-learning algorithms on the scans. After creating a 3D scan of the text using a CT scan, the scroll was then separated into segments.A machine learning model — an application of AI — then detected the inked regions, allowing them to decipher the text.
Mastro, a professor at Naples' University, called the technique “revolutionary”. “We worked literally day and night to study them, but I am more excited that using this method we can reveal what has been hidden in the scrolls for almost 2,000 years,” said Mastro.

Caught in “the Web”!
Dave and Kelly loved their computer. Their parents got it for them a couple of months ago, and they had taught their kids how to use it. They bought some computer games for the kids to play and connected the computer to the Internet. The kids loved going on the Internet and visiting websites. They got to do research for their homework, play games, print colouring pages and read stories. They also got to email their friends and even chat with other kids, after getting their parents' permission.
Because the kids liked the Internet so much, they would finish their homework, and then go to surf the Internet. Very often, they didn't feel the passage of time and found themselves almost falling asleep in front of the computer screen.
One day they stayed up late surfing the Internet after they were done with their homework. They watched a video about a science fiction story, which described two alien species hunting human information. The species coming from a distance tried to collect every kind of data about humans, but in vain. They were detected and driven away by watchful humans. After a while they started getting tired and they were almost falling asleep. While they were in the twilight between being asleep and being awake, they felt a strong suction coming from the computer screen. It felt like a huge vacuum cleaner!
By now, they were fully awake, but when they looked around, they did not see their living room anymore. Instead, they were drawn into the computer itself by that mysterious power. They were surrounded by a complex system of tubes and small boxes and columns. They were all in different shapes, such as being tall, short, wide, narrow, round, square, etc. More strangely, they all felt a little warm and some even were shining with real, blue or orange light. They saw themselves floating in a long tube with speeding chunks of alphabets, numbers, images and sounds. They were INSIDE the computer!
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Their dream came true and they decided to let loose and drift along the long tubes and have some fun.
But after a few days they started missing something and that was the feel of love.
参考范文:
Their dream came true and they decided to let loose and drift along the long tubes and have some fun. They travelled all over the world and they found themselves even in their favourite scientist's house; they found it was fun to spy on people that couldn't see them. They travelled through the long tubes to see things and people that they had always wanted to see. They got to watch the scientist who stayed up and they were the first ones to know about his new discoveries. They had a blast.
But after a few days they started missing something and that was the feel of love. Life wasn't all that fun without a hug from their mama and daddy; they wanted to come home but how could they? There was only one way and that was through the heart. They had to want to come back so badly that it even meant they had to listen to the rules that Mum and Dad made and do research for schoolwork instead of playing computer games so much. They finally opened their eyes as their mother said it was time to get up for school.
