A We were standing at the top of a tower. I saw twisting streets leading to the square. “See, my dear,” Father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square.” Father’s words always guided me. Dreaming of becoming a fashion designer, I came to Paris, but had no luck. Then one day I met a friend wearing a beautiful sweater. “What an interesting stitch!” I cried.“It was done by Mrs. Vidian,” my friend explained.“She learned the stitch in Armenia, her native country.” Suddenly I had a daring idea. Why not design, make and sell my own clothes? I drew a butterfly pattern and asked Mrs. Vidian to knit it into a sweater. It proved a success. A New York store wanted 40 sweaters to be ready in two weeks. I accepted the order. My happiness disappeared, however, when Mrs. Vidian told me it took her almost a week to knit one sweater. I was crushed. Then I remembered Father’s words. There must be other Armenian women in Paris who mastered the special stitch. Then I searched for any Armenians living in Paris. At last I tracked down several. Two weeks later, the first shipment was on its way to the United States!  From that day on orders poured in. Then came another test. As I was busy getting ready to show my winter fashions, the sewing girls quit their jobs. Where was the way out this time? I wondered and worried. Then it dawned on me. I worked hurriedly. And right on time, my show took place. Some coats had no sleeves; some were only patterns made of heavy cotton cloth, but on these I attached material to show what colors and textures the clothes would have when they were finished. What a show! Once again Father’s words helped me. 1.What problem did the writer face after accepting the order? A.It was impossible for Vidian to meet the deadline. B.The sewing girls quit their jobs. C.She found it hard to track Armenians living in Paris. D.There was a shortage of suitable cloth. 根据第三段“My happiness disappeared, however, when Mrs. Vidian told me it took her almost a week to knit one sweater.” 2.What do the underlined words “the first shipment” refer to in paragraph 4? A.Raw materials. B.More orders. C.The forty sweaters. D.The special stitch. 根据第三段“A New York store wanted 40 sweaters to be ready in two weeks. I accepted the order.”以及画线词上文“Then I searched for any Armenians living in Paris. At last I tracked down several.” 3.How did the writer deal with the show problem? A.She put off the show. B.She showed the clothes unfinished. C.She employed more sewing girls. D.She completed the clothes in a hurry. 根据最后一段“Some coats had no sleeves; some were only patters made of heavy cotton cloth, but on these I attached material to show what colors and textures the clothes would have when they were finished.” 4.Which of the following might the writer agree with? A.Practice makes perfect. B.Like father, like son. C.Easier said than done. D.All roads lead to Rome. B Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy.It can also be full of challenges, setbacks (挫折) and heartbreaks.Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires — that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones.Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls (陷阱) that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place. This tension between what we feel we can have and what we’re seemingly able to have is the niggling (烦人的) suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it’s easier to just give up.But we’re never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us — the real us.It’s the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little “dead” inside because you’re dropping “you”. So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns? Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today’s challenges. While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind — or the minds of those close to us — usually says we can’t.That isn’t a reason to stop, and it’s just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It’s all about starting simple and doing it now. Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you’ll be on your way. 5.It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should .  A.slow down and live a simple life B.be careful when we choose to change C.stick to our dreams under any circumstances D.be content with what we already have 解析:选C 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Whatever our circumstances,we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires ...our loved ones.”和第二段中的“It’s the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little‘dead’ inside because you’re dropping ‘you’.” 6.What is the key to breaking the old patterns? A.To focus on every detail. B.To decide and take immediate action. C.To listen to those close to us. D.To think twice before we act. 根据最后一段中的“Decide and act before overthinking.”可知,B项正确,D项错误;根据倒数第二段中的“ ...or the minds of those close to us ...That isn’t a reason to stop ...” 7.Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph? A.Escape from your punishment. B.Realization of your dreams. C.Freedom from your tension. D.Reduction of your expectations. 8.What does the author intend to tell us? A.It’s easier than we think to get what we want. B.It’s important to learn to accept sufferings in life. C.It’s impractical to change our way of thinking. D.It’s harder than we expect to follow a new course. 故选A项。 Ⅱ. On any given day, many of us wrestle with our fears. We might be considering changing a job, telling someone we love them or wanting to speak up for what’s right when we see injustice (不公正). 9 Or it says that we don’t have the ability to create the life or world we want to have. The cycle often plays out in the same way.  So, what should we do? 10 Instead, we can choose to accept fear as part of the process of change and practice courage.Though courage is often thought of as an inborn character, it’s actually a practice that can be learned for dealing with difficulty. 11 Here are two useful tips for dealing with fear and moving closer to courage.  Listen without attachment. Many of us who are stuck in fear have an inner critic (批评家), constantly telling us we’ll fail.Sometimes we adopt approaches to removing it. 12 However, if we can take time to listen to our inner critic without attachment — without the need to ignore or accept what it is saying — we’re in a better position to learn from it.   13 Creating courageous communities gives us the support to face challenges.Sometimes our stories get in our way, and we need people who are doing similar work to help us see where we’re getting stuck or what we’re truly good at.  A.Fear shows up in the body. B.You’ll be more likely to make the changes. C.In other words, courage can become a habit. D.Don’t see fear as bad or try to remove it when it arises. E.But a voice within us pipes up saying that there’s no point. F.While we can get temporary relief, they don’t actually make the critic go away. G.Surround yourself with like⁃minded people who also honor the values of courage. 9.选E 根据空后“Or it says that we don’t have the ability to create the life or world we want to have.” 10.选D 根据空后的“Instead, we can choose to accept fear as part of the process of change and practice courage.” 11.选C 根据空前“it’s actually a practice that can be learned for dealing with difficulty”可知,C项符合语境。 12.选F 根据空前“Sometimes we adopt approaches to removing it.” 空后的“courageous communities”即指G项中提到的“like⁃minded people who also honor the values of courage”,故选G。
