How sneaker culture took over the world Sneakers have come a long way from when they were first invented in 1860s England for the upper-class playing croquet (槌球) and tennis. Long worn for function 1 fashion, today sneakers have become an entire culture—both a form of self-expression and a high art found in museum exhibits and designer auction houses. 2 transformed sneaker culture into a true phenomenon was the 1985 release of Nike’s Air Jordan 1s. In 1984, Michael Jordan was a talented rookie who had yet to play in a professional game. 3 that, Nike saw Jordan as the future of their brand, signing him to a five-year, $2.5 million endorsement (代言) deal. 4 Jordan matured into one of the greatest basketball players of all time, the sneaker’s popularity skyrocketed. Meanwhile, another cultural shift 5 (take) place with casual Fridays introduced in white-collar businesses. It was when men were allowed to put aside their suits and wear something one day a week that showed people who they really were. As sneakers became increasingly desired, footwear companies turned to 6 (generate) even more publicity by collaborating with celebrities and luxury brands, as well as releasing small batches of limited-edition shoes with eye-pop ping designs. Celebrities also started their collaborations with sneaker brands, which helped target a whole new demographic of people to experience sneaker culture. It was a blending of high and low fashion, 7 the shoe industry has never really seen before. A pair that Jordan wore in his legendary final NBA season 8 (sell) even for $2.2 mllion, making them the most expensive sneakers ever to appear at auction. By the mid-2010s, speakers 9 (become) solid gold status symbols. Wearing rare and cool sneakers became an expression of one’s social status. But not until recently, sneakers are finally getting their due as part of our cultural heritage—and particularly how Black culture has shaped that heritage. It took decades for the sneaker industry to recognize that 10 these Black athletes or artists that championed their products, there would be no sneaker culture. 1.rather than/instead of 2.What 3.Despite 4.As 5.was taking 6.generating 7.which 8.was sold/sold 9.had become 10.without 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 故填rather than/instead of。 2. 故填What。 3. 故填As。 5. 故填was taking。 6. 故填which。 8. 故填was sold/sold。 9. 结合句意和下文中的“there would be no sneaker culture.” 故填without。 Section B Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A.diversity  B.conclusive  C. widespread  D.influential  E. spectator  F. outcome  G. consistent  H. stamina  I. varsity  J. referee  K. coverage The Power of Sports Sports hold a special place in our lives, uniting people from all walks of life. The town itself lost two great lime trees from the former market square. The disappearance of such prominent features had altered the appearance of the town center entirely, much to the annoyance of its conservative inhabitants. Among the annoyed, under normal circumstances, would have been Chief Inspector Douglas Pelham, head of the local police force. But at the height of that week’s storm, when the winds brought down even the mature walnut tree in his garden, Pelham had in fact been in no fit state to notice. A large and healthy man, he had for the first time in his life been seriously ill with an attack of bronchitis When he first complained of an aching head and tightness in his chest, his wife, Molly, had tried to persuade him to go to the doctor. Convinced that the police force could not do without him, he had, as usual, ignored her and attempted to carry on working. It was only when his colleague, Sergeant Lloyd, took the initiative and drove him to the doctor’s door that he finally gave in. In no time at all, Lloyd took him to the chemist’s to get his prescribed antibiotics and then home to Molly, who sent him straight to bed. When Molly told him, on the Thursday morning, that the walnut tree had been brought down during the night, Pelham wasn’t been able to take it in. On Thursday evening, he asked weakly about damage to the house, groaned thankfully when he heard there was none, and pulled the sheets over his head. It wasn’t until Saturday, when the antibiotics took effect, his temperature dropped and he got up, that he realized with a shock that the loss of the walnut tree had made a permanent difference to the appearance of the living-room. Previously, the view from the living-room had featured the handsome walnut tree. This has not darkened the room because there was also a window on the opposite wall, but it had provided interesting patterns of light and shade that disguised (掩饰) the true state of the worn furniture in the living room. Also, the leafy garden had created an impression of privacy. With the tree gone, the room seemed cruelly bright, its worn furnishings exposed in all their shabbiness (简陋). And the view from the window didn’t bear looking at. 36.Why were some people in Brackham annoyed after the storm? A.The town looked different. B.The police had done little to help. C.No market could be held. D.Fallen trees had not been removed. 37.From the third paragraph, what do we learn about Chief Inspector Pelham and his work? A.He found his work extremely annoying. B.He was sure that he played a vital role in his work. C.He considered the police systems not efficient. D.He did not trust the decisions made by his superiors. 38.When Inspector Pelham’s wife told him about the walnut tree, he appeared to be ________. A.relaxed. B.shocked. C.saddened. D.uninterested. 39.What was the impact of the storm on the Pelhams’ living-room? A.It was pleasantly brighter. B.It felt less private. C.It had a better view. D.It looked less shabby. 根据第一段“Many trees in the Brackham area were brought down in the terrible storms. The total fertility rate, or the average births per woman, has fallen to 1.1, far below the 2.1 needed to maintain a stable population. After a possible small post-pandemic uptick of births in 2024, the auspicious year of the dragon, the birth rate is expected to resume its decline. Meanwhile the number of people over 60 is expected to grow from 300m in 2023 to more than 400m by 2035 — that is, from one fifth to nearly one-third of the population. This bodes ill for China’s economy, with fewer young people working to support more old folks. But state planners think they have found a silver lining: the “silver economy”. In 2024 China’s State Council issued a policy document on promoting a “silver economy to improve the well-being of the elderly”. It called for companies to invest in elder-friendly industries such as smart health care, anti-ageing products, personal pensions and tourism. “Promote theme products such as nostalgic tours and youth tours,” it recommended. The state has also called upon local governments to develop better services for old people, such as meal deliveries, at-home health care and cultural enrichment activities. The focus on silver-haired spenders makes sense. The ageing society will have massive needs — and the coming generation of retirees will have money to spend. The UN estimates that the largest age group, aged 50 — 60, includes 230m people, most of whom will retire in the next decade. “They are the wealthiest sector of society,” says Tim Lie of Quantasing, an educational-technology firm that pivoted to focus on the silver economy in 2022. Older Chinese tend to be more frugal. But the growing groups of those in “new middle age” (45 — 60) and “old age” (over 60) are in a sweet spot in the middle, says Mr Xie. They spent most of their working lives in China’s boom years and are retiring with enough time to enjoy their savings. Quantasing has attracted 120m users to its online courses, which help retired people develop hobbies such as calligraphy, meditation and piano. Only 400,000 are paying customers so far, but Quantasing expects that number to grow as it expands into wellness products and tourism. There are challenges to developing the silver economy. The elderly are susceptible to scams. They will need consumer protection, even as the government encourages firms to sell them as much as possible. Chen Gong of Peking University warns that too many firms may be piling in without enough thorough research. “Many policies are shouting a lot but doing little,” he says. Cai Fang of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences points out that more welfare and social services for the elderly are needed. Silver-haired spending is bound to grow. It will be tougher to make sure that the well-being of China’s old folks grows along with it. 43.Which of the following best describes the relationship between China’s population change and the “silver economy”? A.The decline in the birth rate directly leads to the emergence of the “silver economy”. B.The “silver economy” is basically a result of the post-pandemic economic restructuring. C.The “silver economy” aims to reverse the trend of population shrinking and ageing. D.The growth of the elderly population and related challenges boost “silver economy”. 44.What does the underlined word “frugal” most likely mean in this context? A.Economical. B.Impulsive. C.Generous. D.Considerate. 45.What can be inferred from the fact that only 400,000 out of 120m Quantasing users are paying customers? A.The online courses provided by Quantasing are not tailored to the needs of the elderly. B.Retired people in China are generally not willing to subscribe to such courses. C.Quantasing has great potential to increase its revenue by improving its business model. D.The market for elder-friendly online courses is not promising in the predictable future. 46.Which of the following factors is least likely to contribute to the growth of the “silver economy” in China? A.The continuous increase in the number of retirees with certain financial resources. B.The measures to encourage young labour to apply themselves to support the elderly. C.The improvement of the quality of life and consumption concepts of the elderly. D.The effective implementation of policies to facilitate firms investing in elder-friendly industries. 【答案】43.D 44.A 45.C 46.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了中国面临人口减少和老龄化加速问题,政府通过发展“银发经济”应对挑战,并指出新一代退休群体消费能力较强,市场潜力大,但仍需政策保障和企业创新以避免风险。 43.细节理解题。根据第一段中“China’s population is shrinking and ageing, a process that will quicken in 2025. (中国人口正在缩减并老龄化,这一进程将在2025年加速)”和“This bodes ill for China’s economy, with fewer young people working to support more old folks. But state planners think they have found a silver lining: the “silver economy”. (这对中国经济来说是个不祥之兆,因为更少的年轻人需要供养更多的老年人。但国家规划者认为他们找到了一个积极因素:‘银发经济’)”可知,中国老龄化加剧及养老压力推动了银发经济的发展。故选D项。 44.词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“But the growing groups of those in “new middle age” (45 — 60) and “old age” (over 60) are in a sweet spot in the middle, says Mr Xie. They spent most of their working lives in China’s boom years and are retiring with enough time to enjoy their savings. (但谢先生指出,处于‘新中年’,即45至60岁,和‘老年’,即60岁以上,这两个增长群体正处于最佳状态。他们职业生涯的大部分时间都处于中国经济高速增长期,如今退休后有充足的时间享受积蓄)”可知,新一代退休群体因经济条件较好,愿意消费,且此处包含转折,故推测上了年纪的中国人往往更节俭,画线词意为“节约的,节俭的”,与Economical“节约的”意思相近。故选A项。 45.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Quantasing has attracted 120m users to its online courses, which help retired people develop hobbies such as calligraphy, meditation and piano. Only 400,000 are paying customers so far, but Quantasing expects that number to grow as it expands into wellness products and tourism. (目前,Quantasing的在线课程已吸引1.2亿用户学习书法、冥想和钢琴等退休爱好课程。虽然目前付费用户仅40万,但随着公司向健康产品和旅游业务拓展,这一数字有望持续增长)”可推知,Quantasing用户基数大,付费转化率低,但商业模式优化后有望提升收益。故选C项。 46.细节理解题。根据第二段中“It called for companies to invest in elder-friendly industries such as smart health care, anti-ageing products, personal pensions and tourism. (政府呼吁企业投资发展适老产业,包括智能医疗、抗衰老产品、个人养老金和老年旅游等领域)”、第三段中“The ageing society will have massive needs — and the coming generation of retirees will have money to spend. The UN estimates that the largest age group, aged 50 — 60, includes 230m people, most of whom will retire in the next decade. (老龄化社会将催生巨大需求——新一代退休群体将具备可观的消费能力。据联合国估算,中国50至60岁年龄段人口规模最大,达2.3亿人,其中绝大多数将在未来十年内退休)”和第四段中“But the growing groups of those in “new middle age” (45 — 60) and “old age” (over 60) are in a sweet spot in the middle, says Mr Xie. They spent most of their working lives in China’s boom years and are retiring with enough time to enjoy their savings. (但谢先生指出,处于‘新中年’,即45至60岁,和‘老年’,即60岁以上,这两个增长群体正处于最佳状态。他们职业生涯的大部分时间都处于中国经济高速增长期,如今退休后有充足的时间享受积蓄)”可知,有一定财力的退休人员不断增加,老年人生活质量和消费观念的提高,政策支持适老产业,均可推动银发经济,鼓励年轻劳动力致力于赡养老人的措施与银发经济发展无关。故选B项。 Section C Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. An environmental group in Colombia is leading a project to save wild areas in the San Lucas mountains with the help of coffee growers. 47 Colombia has more different kinds of living things than any country after neighboring Brazil, but destruction of forests has increased since 2016. Government information shows that in 2017, almost 220,000 hectares of forest were destroyed compared to 124,000 hectares in 2015. Areas like San Lucas have been threatened by mining and growers of coca plants, which are used to make the drug cocaine. To date, the project includes 10 families who farm 400 hectares of coffee plants. WebConserva said the project costs about $77,000 dollars a year. The group said it hopes that, in time, 200 families will be included. At that level, 20,000 hectares of untouched forest could be protected. In San Lucas, the families promise not to cut down trees to expand their crops or to hunt wild animals from the forest. 48 Arcadio Barajas is among those taking part. His new coffee plantation establishes a barrier between cattle ranches and forests where wild animals like the jaguar live and hunt. The presence of the coffee fields reduces the possibility that there will be conflict between cattle ranchers and the big cats. Barajas said that cutting down the forest to plant coca and killing wildlife were against his faith. 49 “I’m taking care of the environment, the forest and the animals, so that I don’t end up ruined as well,” he said. Arnobis Romero is a former coca grower and miner. He said many families depended on illegal activities to support their children. For example, at times one kilogram of Coca could be sold for $760. Romero said, “We feel really proud to look after this biodiversity and to leave it... for future generations.” 50 But each year, hundreds of thousands of hectares of land are destroyed. Activists want San Lucas to be protected as a national park, but the process has been slow. A.In return, they receive $250 to $300 for 125 kilograms of coffee. B.It protects forests, biodiversity and ecosystems at the same time. C.Colombia has set aside 16 percent of its territory as protected land. D.Gold mining and coca farming make more money than coffee growing E.But now he feels that growing coffee lets him be a good steward (管理人) of the land. F.The goal is to limit additional development in the northern San Lucas area which is rich in biodiversity, meaning many forms of life live there. 【答案】47.F 48.A 49.E 50.C 【导语】这是一篇新闻报道。主要报道了哥伦比亚的一个环保组织正在咖啡种植者的帮助下领导一个拯救圣卢卡斯山脉野生地区的项目。 47.上文“An environmental group in Colombia is leading a project to save wild areas in the San Lucas mountains with the help of coffee growers.(哥伦比亚的一个环保组织正在咖啡种植者的帮助下领导一个拯救圣卢卡斯山脉野生地区的项目)”可知,本句承接上文,说明拯救圣卢卡斯山脉野生地区的项目的目的。选项F项“其目标是限制圣卢卡斯北部地区的额外开发,该地区拥有丰富的生物多样性,这意味着那里生活着多种形式的生命”符合语境。故选F项。 48.根据上文“In San Lucas, the families promise not to cut down trees to expand their crops or to hunt wild animals from the forest.(在圣卢卡斯,这些家庭承诺不会砍伐树木来扩大庄稼,也不会从森林中捕猎野生动物)”可知,本句说明承诺保护森林的回报是什么。选项A项“作为回报,他们每卖出125公斤咖啡就能得到250到300美元”符合语境,故选A项。 49.上文“Barajas said that cutting down the forest to plant coca and killing wildlife were against his faith.(巴拉哈斯说,砍伐森林种植古柯和杀害野生动物违背了他的信仰)”提到破坏森林和杀害野生动物违背了他的信仰。下文““I’m taking care of the environment, the forest and the animals, so that I don’t end up ruined as well,” he said.(“我要保护环境、森林以及动物,这样我自身才不会遭殃。” III. Summary Writing (10分) 51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Should Schools Ban Smartphones? France has not allowed smartphone use in primary or secondary schools since 2018, claiming that it would help children focus, reduce their social-media use and alleviate online bullying. The key question is whether banning smartphones in schools offers any benefits to mental health. A recent study, led by Amy Orben at the University of Cambridge, asked 17, 409 people between the ages of 10 and 21 how satisfied they were with their lives and how much they used social media. The findings, reported in 2024 in Nature Communications, show that girls who increased their social media use over the course of a year were significantly less satisfied with their lives if the increase took place when they were between 11 and 13. Boys showed the same trend when increases took place when they were 14 or 15 years old. How much of this will change by banning phones in schools is unclear. In a paper published in the Lancet in February, Victoria Goodyear at the University of Birmingham compared the mental well-being of students in schools that implemented restrictive smartphone policies with those with relaxed policies. Her results show that, though those who spent more time on a smartphone overall have a decline in mental well-being, there was no difference between the two groups. She and her colleagues argue that setting up policies at schools alone is simply not enough. Researchers are trying to paint a complete picture with both hands tied behind their back. According to Dr Orben, social-media companies routinely refuse to give independent researchers access to detailed data on the behaviour of their users. This forces researchers to rely on less accurate proxy measures, like overall screen time. It means that children playing educational games are being put in the same analytical bin as children who are on social media. A more nuanced(细致的) picture of the effects of smartphones needs to be drawn. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The passage mainly explores whether banning smartphones in schools benefits students' mental health. By the mid-2010s, speakers 9 (become) solid gold status symbols. Wearing rare and cool sneakers became an expression of one’s social status. But not until recently, sneakers are finally getting their due as part of our cultural heritage—and particularly how Black culture has shaped that heritage. C China’s population is shrinking and ageing, a process that will quicken in 2025. III. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ IV. C China’s population is shrinking and ageing, a process that will quicken in 2025. III. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ IV.
