17. Why do some people say they never have dreams according to Dr Garfield?
A. They forget about their dreams.
B. They don’t want to tell the truth.
C. They have no bad experiences.
18. Why did Davis stop having dreams?
A. He got a serious heart attack.
B. He was too sad about his brother’s death.
C. He was frightened by a terrible dream.
19. What is Dr Garfield’s opinion about dreaming?
A. It is very useful. B. It makes things worse. C. It prevents the mind from working.
20. Why do some people turn off their dreams completely?
A. To sleep better. B. To recover from illnesses. C. To stay away from their problems.
A 18. B 19. A 20. C
M: We are glad to have Dr Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question. Does everyone dream?
W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly when people say that they never dream. What they really mean is that they don’t remember their dreams or they don’t think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of as a child when they first reported their dreams, or it was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer, but suddenly he stopped having dreams. I asked him what had happened. It turned out that his brother died of a heart attack, and he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event and to dream about it was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about it. Actually, the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming. Because it means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you’re dreaming about it, and even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams when a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill. Or when a person has been really sad. If people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don’t allow themselves to even think about it.

This is not a diet. It’s a simple way to lose weight. You don’t have to give up the food you love or join a gym. You just follow some habits thin people have. Keep them, and you’ll become thin.
◆Wake-up
When you wake up in the morning, sit up slowly without using your hands. With legs straight out, lean forward (前俯) until you feel sore (酸痛的) in your back. It will use up 10 calories.
◆Start with soup
Order a clear soup, and have it before the main food. In this way, you’ll feel fuller, so you’ll eat less when the main food comes.
◆An apple or more a day
Apples are full of fiber (纤维) and water, so your stomach will want less. Studies show that people who eat at least three apples or pears a day may lose weight.
◆Talk it up
Every time you use the cell phone, stand up and walk around. Heavy people sit on average two and a half hours more each day than thin people. This skill is very important as standing up and walking around will burn up 50 or more calories. Use these skills, and you will have a big weight loss.

Nuclear expert Peng Shilu once said that he only did two things in his entire life: one was to build nuclear submarines (核潜艇), and the other to build nuclear power plants. Despite being one of the founding members of China’s nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. In fact, he held leading positions in most of China’s early nuclear power projects, from the first-generation nuclear submarines to the establishment of Dayawan and Qinshan nuclear power stations.
Peng was born in 1925 into a family of heroes. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Peng was selected to study chemical machinery (机械) in the Soviet Union. In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. At that time, the central government decided to select a group of outstanding students studying abroad to transfer to the atomic energy major. Peng willingly agreed, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to developing China’s nuclear power.
In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In the 1980s, China decided to build a commercial nuclear power plant. Appointed as the director-in-chief, Peng once again devoted himself to its preparation and construction.
During his career, Peng held a variety of high-ranking titles. In 1994, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one of the top academic bodies in China.
Peng passed away in Beijing on March 22, 2021 at the age of 96. The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee awarded the title “Role Model of the Times” to Peng for his contributions.
24. What does the author imply in the first paragraph?
A. Peng took interest in nothing but nuclear power.
B. Peng was actually a very modest person.
C. Peng played a tiny role in building nuclear power plants.
D. Peng was the most important figure in the nuclear field.
25. What does the underlined part in the 2nd paragraph mean?
A. Focus on. B. Know about.
C. Turn to. D. Research into.
26. How does the author develop the passage?
A. By following the time order. B. By showing the great importance.
C. By providing some similar examples. D. By explaining the process of research.
27. Which of the following is the proper title for the passage?
A. China Honors a Nuclear Power Expert
B. Peng Shilu Built Nuclear Submarines
C. China Lost a Famous Nuclear Expert
D. A Nuclear Hero Devoted Himself to Helping His Country
B 25. C 26. A 27. D

根据第一段中“Despite being one of the founding members of China’s nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. (尽管彭是中国核电工业的奠基人之一,但他说自己在这项任务中发挥的作用很小)”可推知,彭士禄院士是一个非常谦虚的人。故选B项。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线部分的上文“Peng was selected to study chemical machinery (机械) in the Soviet Union. In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. (彭被选派到苏联学习化学机械。1956年,当他即将毕业时,他面临着人生的转折点)”和下文“the atomic energy major (原子能专业)”可知,彭面临的转折点是放弃自己原来的专业,改学原子能专业,turn to表示“转向”,与画线部分意义一致。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文可知,第一段引出文章的主题,再结合第二段中“Peng was born in 1925 into a family of heroes. (彭于1925年出生在一个英雄家庭)”、“In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. (1956年,当他即将毕业时,他面临着人生的转折点)”、第三段中“In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In Central America, sea turtle eggs are a popular cuisine dish. The eggs are hugely and secretly harvested onto tables, leaving the sea turtles listed as threatened. Yet we simply do not have the ability to continuously guard large beaches. Scientist Kim Williams was thinking hard when she had an “aha” moment: How about placing a fake egg containing a GPS tracker.
That’s how the special eggs come in. To build them, Williams and colleagues used a 3D printer. Then, they fixed in the smallest GPS tracking devices. As mother turtles laid their eggs under cover of night, the researchers slipped a single spy egg into each nest. Once they are covered in sand from the real ones, “it’s very difficult to tell the difference”, says Williams.
Of the 101 spy eggs, 25 were taken away while six of them were quickly discovered and left on the beach. The team received tracking data with the farthest egg travelling 137 kilometers inland and stopping at a local supermarket. The spy egg sent its final signal the next day from a personal house, suggesting that the research team had tracked the eggs all the way. The researchers stress that the tracker is not a way to catch local thieves: many of whom are living in poverty, but rather a tool to better understand how the deal goes.
Still stopping stealing is not as simple as handing the tracking data over to the police. Across Central America; trade in sea turtle eggs can be legally ambiguous. In Costa Rica: for example, it is illegal to steal and sell sea turtle eggs but buying them is not a crime. It is not black and white. Meanwhile, local support is in need above all. "It, but not tracking with eggs, is the real meat and potatoes of conservation,” says Williams.
28. What is the major threat to the existence of sea turtles?
A Unsafe GPS trackers. B. Unguarded Sea Beaches.
C. The popular dishes of sea turtles. D. The overhunt of turtle eggs.
29. How does Williams explain her study in paragraph 2?
A. By listing scientific data. B. By distinguishing the differences.
C. By clarifying the process. D. By demonstrating an expert’s statement.
30. The researchers tracked so many spy eggs to ______.
A. test the GPS trackers
B. arrest the egg thieves
C. look into the whole deal of turtle eggs
D. perceive the current situation of sea turtles
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Spy Eggs Save Endangered Sea Turtles
B. Sea Turtles Draw Constant Concern
C. Spy Eggs Help Locate Egg Thieves
D. Advanced Technology Protects Sea Turtles
D 29. C 30. C 31. A

根据第一段的“In Central America, sea turtle eggs are a popular cuisine dish. The eggs are hugely and secretly harvested onto tables, leaving the sea turtles listed as threatened.(在中美洲,海龟蛋是一道很受欢迎的菜肴。大量的海龟蛋被偷偷地放到了餐桌上,海龟被列为受到威胁的物种。 )”可知,海龟蛋的过度捕猎是海龟生存的主要威胁。故选D。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的“To build them, Williams and colleagues used a 3D printer. Then, they fixed in the smallest GPS tracking devices. As mother turtles laid their eggs under cover of night, the researchers slipped a single spy egg into each nest.(为了建造它们,威廉姆斯和同事们使用了3D打印机。然后,他们安装了最小的GPS跟踪设备。当母海龟在夜晚的掩护下产卵时,研究人员在每个巢穴中放入一个间谍蛋。)”可知,通过澄清过程,威廉姆斯解释了她的研究过程,故选C。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“The researchers stress that the tracker is not a way to catch local thieves: many of whom are living in poverty, but rather a tool to better understand how the deal goes.(研究人员强调,追踪器不是用来抓当地小偷的,因为很多小偷都生活在贫困之中,而是用来更好地了解交易如何进行的工具。) ”可知,研究人员追踪了如此多的间谍蛋,以研究整个海龟蛋的交易,故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文尤其是第一段的“Yet we simply do not have the ability to continuously guard large beaches. Scientist Kim Williams was thinking hard when she had an “aha” moment: How about placing a fake egg containing a GPS tracker(然而,我们根本没有能力持续守卫大片的海滩。科学家金姆·威廉姆斯(Kim Williams)正苦思冥想,突然灵机一动:放一个装着GPS追踪器的假鸡蛋怎么样?)”可知,本文主要讲的是科学家金姆·威廉姆斯为了追踪被人买走的海龟蛋,设计了可以追踪海龟蛋去向的间谍蛋,因此最好的题目是A选项Spy Eggs Save Endangered Sea Turtles(间谍蛋拯救濒危海龟),故选A。

Bill Gates’ body might live in the present, but his brain lives in the future. He has made a career out of predicting what will happen in matters of computing, public health and the environment. He correctly predicted the rise of smartphones and social media, and his latest predictions could come true, too. Here’s what Gates predicts for the future of our world.
In his Annual Letter 2015, Gates made the prediction that Africa’s agriculture industry would increase productivity by 50% by 2030. Now the continent buys about $50 billion worth of food from other countries each year, although 70% of people in Africa are farmers. “In the next 15 years, however, creations in farming will solve the food problem in Africa,” Gates wrote. “The world has already developed crops that are more productive; with all the technologies, African farmers could possibly double their harvests. ”
By 2035, there could be almost no poor countries. In his Annual Letter 2014, Gates bravely predicted that continued levels of foreign help could mean there would be almost no more poor countries by 2035. “Almost all countries will be what we now call lower-middle income or richer,” Gates explained. “Countries will learn from their most productive neighbors and benefit from things like better seeds and the digital revolution. ”
By 2030, the world will discover a clean energy breakthrough to power our world. One of Gates’ more hopeful predictions which came in 2016 said that wind, solar, or some other renewable resources would power most of the world within 15 years. “The difficulty we face is big, perhaps bigger than many people imagine,” he wrote in his letter. “But so is the chance to make things better.” Many of the poor countries he visited had no running water or electricity. At night this meant they couldn’t light or power their homes, and keep businesses open. “If the world can find a type of cheap, clean energy, it will do more than prevent climate change,” he wrote. “It will change the lives of millions of the poorest families.”
32. What does the author think of Gates’ predictions?
A. They sound quite unreal. B. They are mainly about computers.
C. They will probably come true. D. They haven't produced any end result.
33. How is the agriculture in Africa?
A. It is losing its workforce. B. It is in need of productivity.
C. It can satisfy the local needs. D. It is as backward as Africa's industry.
34. What should poor countries do according to Gates?
A. Use expensive seeds. B. Expect less foreign help.
C. Rely on the digital revolution. D. Turn to other countries for good practices.
35. What’s Gates’ attitude to clean energy development?
A. It has a long way to go. B. It can keep up with the times.
C. It can control climate change. D. It won't surely benefit poor families.
C 33. B 34. D 35. A

compare...to... 故填to。
故填an。
“(pass) down through generations”作后置定语,pass(传递)是非谓语动词,与逻辑主语the Youshen tradition构成被动关系,故用过去分词表被动,作定语。
故填which。
故填have earned。
名词desire(愿望)后常用不定式作后置定语;a desire to do sth.“想做某事”。故填to return。

One cold winter's day, three boys were wandering the street. The oldest was Henry, who always was in trouble himself, and tried to get others into trouble. Another boy, James, was also a naughty one. Both of the two often got scoldings from their fathers for making trouble. The youngest, whose name was George, was a very good boy. He wished to do right, but was very much wanting in courage.
As they were passing by a schoolhouse, Henry suddenly came up with an idea. “How fun it would be to throw a snowball at the schoolroom door and make the teacher and the students all jump!” he said excitedly.
“Ha! You would jump, if you should do that. If the teacher did not catch you and punish you, he would tell your father, and you would get a scolding then. 'That would make you jump higher than the students, I think. “James replied.
“Why, we would get off already before the teacher could come to the door so that he could not tell who we are.” Henry said as his eyes fell on George, who was looking at them in silence. Henry smiled cunningly(狡猾的) and continued, " Here is a snowball just as hard as ice, and George would throw it at the door as fast as he could.”
“Give it to him and see. I guess he would not dare to throw it.” James said. “James, do you think George is a coward(胆小鬼)? You do not know him as well as I do!” Henry said with eyebrows uplifted, staring at George provocatively(挑衅地). Then he held the snowball and lifted it up. “George, take the snowball, and show James that you are not such a coward as he thinks you are.” After saying this, he passed the snowball to George.
Para 1:
Looking at the snowball in his hand, George hesitated.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2:
The two looked at George, astonished.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 1:
Looking at the snowball in his hand, George hesitated. There were two Georges battling against each other within. One urged him to throw the snowball; otherwise he would be called to a coward and laughed at. The other was trying to prevent him and tell him such behavior was truly ridiculous and totally wrong. When the other two boys stared at him inquiringly and encouragingly, George squared his shoulders and exclaimed firmly, “I quit!”
Para 2:
The two looked at George, astonished. This was out of their expectation. “There! I told you he dare not throw it!” James said to Henry. George could hear the obvious disappointment in his voice. Gathering all his courage, George said, “I will never be so foolish to throw that snowball and no one can have me do what I think is wrong!” This would be the real courage. Henry and James realized, at once, that it would do no good to laugh at a boy who had so bold a heart and so fearless a spirit.
尝试:try to/ attempt to
凝视:stare at/ gaze
让某人做某事:have sb. do sth./ make sb. do sth.
惊讶:astonished / surprised

【点睛】[高分句型1] When the other two boys stared at him inquiringly and encouragingly, George squared his shoulders and exclaimed firmly, “I quit!”(运用了when引导时间状语从句)
[高分句型2] Henry and James realized, at once, that it would do no good to laugh at a boy who had so bold a heart and so fearless a spirit.

In Central America sea turtle eggs are a popular cuisine dish.
In Costa Rica: for example it is illegal to steal and sell sea turtle eggs but buying them is not a crime. It is not black and white. Meanwhile, local support is in need above all. "It, but not tracking with eggs, is the real meat and potatoes of conservation,” says Williams.
28. What is the major threat to the existence of sea turtles?
A Unsafe GPS trackers. B. Unguarded Sea Beaches.
C. The popular dishes of sea turtles. D. The overhunt of turtle eggs.
29. How does Williams explain her study in paragraph 2?
A. By listing scientific data. B. By distinguishing the differences.
C. By clarifying the process. D. By demonstrating an expert’s statement.
30. The researchers tracked so many spy eggs to ______.
A. test the GPS trackers
B. arrest the egg thieves
C. look into the whole deal of turtle eggs
D. perceive the current situation of sea turtles
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Spy Eggs Save Endangered Sea Turtles
B. Sea Turtles Draw Constant Concern
C. Spy Eggs Help Locate Egg Thieves
D. Advanced Technology Protects Sea Turtles

Looking at the snowball in his hand, George hesitated.

Let me start by asking the first question, does everyone dream? IT appears that everyone does. Mostly when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don't remember their dreams, or they don't think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of as a child when they first reported their dreams, or IT was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day, someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer, but suddenly he's stopped having dreams. I asked him what had happened. IT turned out that his brother died of a heart attack, and he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a Young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event, and to dream about IT was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about IT. Actually, the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming, because that means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams as long as you're dreaming about IT. And even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is working on IT. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place. And dreams when a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill, or when a person has been really sad, if people turn off their dreams totally IT means they don't allow themselves to even think about IT.
