A lady wanted a birthday gift from her husband. For many months, she had liked a beautiful ring, and knowing her husband could afford it, she told him that was all she wanted. On the morning of the birthday, her husband told her how proud he was to have such a good wife, and how much he loved her. He gave her a beautiful gift package (盒). She opened it and found a dictionary. She raised her voice and said to her husband, “With all your money, you give me a dictionary?” After that, she left him.
Many years passed and the lady was very successful in business. She owned two large companies. She realized her husband was very old, so she thought perhaps she should go to visit him. But before she could, she received a letter telling her that he had died, and gave all of his possessions (财产) to her. She needed to come back and take care of the things.
When she arrived at his house, she was surprised to see the still new dictionary there, just as she had left it years before. With tears in her eyes, she opened it and began to turn the pages. A ring dropped from the dictionary to the floor and a card could be seen. She picked it up and found it was the ring she wanted in those days. And on the card was the date of her birth, and the words “LOVE YOU ALWAYS”.
Please remember sometimes the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, unless they are felt with your heart.
34. What can we infer from the underlined sentence?

D. The lady didn’t mind her husband’s death at all.

If you are a recent social science graduate who has had to listen to jokes about unemployment(失业) from your computer major(专业课) classmates, you may have had the last laugh. There are many advantages for the social science major because this high-tech “Information Age” requires people who are flexible(灵活的) and who have good communication skills.
There are many social science majors in large companies who fill important positions.
For example, a number of research studies found that social science majors had achieved greater managerial(管理的) success than those who had technical training or pre-professional courses. Studies show that social science majors are most suitable for change, which is the leading feature(特点) of the kind of high-speed, high-pressure, high-tech world we now live in.
Social science majors are not only experiencing success in their long-term company jobs, but they are also finding jobs more easily. A study showed that many companies had filled a large percentage of their entry-level (入门的) positions with social science graduates. The study also showed that the most important quality in a person who was looking for a job was communication skills, noted as “very important”, by 92 percent of the companies. Social science majors have these skills, often without knowing how important they are. It is probably because of these skills that they have been offered different kinds of positions.
Finally, although some social science majors may still find it more difficult than their technically trained classmates to land the first job, recent graduates report that they don’t regret their choice of study.
38. By saying that “you may have had the last laugh” in the first paragraph, the author means that you may have________.

C. are equally good at computer skills D. are likely to give others pressure(压力)
40. The underlined word “land” in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A. keep for some time B. successfully get C. start at once D. lose regretfully
41. According to the text, what has made it easy for social science graduates to find jobs?
A. Willingness to take low-paid jobs. B. Readiness to get high-tech knowledge.
C Skills in expressing themselves. D. Part-time work experience.
D
I’m not the kind of mother who normally brushes and styles her daughter’s hair, and my daughter has never liked sitting quietly long enough for me to do it.
But today, I put a chair outside and let my daughter Sally sit on it. She was sitting high with her eyes closed, skin still wet from the shower, and her messy hair behind her back.
I realized she was taking in every touch from my hands. It was the last time for a week that our bodies would connect. Today, I would send Sally away for a week of summer camp. She didn’t ask to go. This was all my idea. She’s nearly 12, and I notice that I’m with my child nearly 24 hours a day.
Living on a farm without any neighbors, I’ve chosen a life that is quieter than a usual family’s. But instead of requiring space away from me, Sally has increasingly depended on me.
What worries me most is that she has become a “mini-me”. She follows my hobbies, my dreams, and my opinions. And that was why I pulled her to the summer camp, a nearby wilderness (荒野) camp called Hawk Circle.
After we ate, I drove Sally to Hawk Circle. Once there, we got a tour of the grounds and were introduced to other campers. Sally stood by the group of children, holding my hand, horror in her eyes, trying to work up the courage to join a game of soccer. “I need you for a few more minutes,” she told me, holding my hand tightly (紧紧地).
I pulled away and walked up to one of the camp’s workers. “Excuse me,” I said loudly, “I’d like to introduce you to my daughter. Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids. ” He came over to talk to Sally, and I kissed her and then I disappeared before she realized I was gone.
On my way home, I felt a piece of my soul had been taken from my body. I began to shake. The tears (泪水) came down my face. It took every bit of my strength to keep driving forward.
When I arrived home, I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. I thought to myself, “I want Sally to have a chance to find herself, out of my shadow. I don’t want to see only myself in my child. I want to learn who she is. If I don’t set her free, I fear I’ll never really meet her real personality. ”
After 12 years of being together, I want to finally meet my daughter for the first time.
42. Sally would be away from her mother for ________.

Think about other people’s ideas carefully
When someone tells you about his ideas, you should think about them carefully, no matter how silly they may seem. This shows you are interested in his ideas and makes him feel good.
Share your ideas with other people.

1. Marie Curie was ________ great scientist. She discovered ________ radium in 1895.
A. a; the B. a; / C. the; / D. the; a
2. The twins are almost the same, so even their father finds ________ hard to tell them from each other.
A. him B. them C. one D. it
句中“finds…hard to tell them from each other.” 提示,find+it+形容词+to do sth,意为“发现做某事…… 需要用it作形式宾语,真正的宾语是句末的不定式短语“to tell them from each other”,其余选项him/them/one都不能承担形式宾语的功能,因此应填it。
3. — The air here is much fresher than before.
—Exactly! We a lot of trees in the past few years.
A. planted B. were planting C. have planted D. will plant
4. Kunqu Opera is ________ thought to be one of the symbols of Suzhou. Don’t miss it during your stay here.
A. hardly B. widely C. suddenly D. badly
A. hardly几乎不;B. widely广泛地;C. suddenly突然地;D. badly恶劣地。
5. The price of cotton has ___a lot. As a result, the factories plan to ____the price of their cotton clothes.
A. raised ;raise B. raised ;rise C. risen ;raise D. risen; rise
第二空根据the price of their cotton clothes可知此处接宾语,用及物动词,故用raise。故选C。
6. No rules, all things will not be long. Without proper lessons, you could ________ a lot of bad habits when playing the piano.
A. give up B. catch up C. keep up D. pick up
【答案】D

A. work B. to work C. working D. worked

11. —Which show do you prefer, Running Man or The Reader?

结合后文“I ______ why he did not park it in the garage”(我疑惑他为什么不把车停进车库),可知此处对应“停车”动作。
根据空后“why he did not park it in the garage”(疑惑的原因),可知此处表达“疑惑、好奇”。
for“为了”、without“没有”、out of“出于”均不符合。
结合后文“his personal car”(他的私人汽车)及“not in his taxi”(不用出租车),可知此处是“私人的事情”。
固定搭配“happen to do sth.”
before“在……
前文提到他是“a single parent with two school-aged children”(有两个学龄儿童的单亲父亲),此处与前文呼应,强调他的家庭身份。
stay up“熬夜”、take up“占据”、cheer up“振作起来”均与“睡觉”的逻辑对应不符;wake up“醒来”,符合语境。
make more contribution to“为……做更多贡献”、show more interest in“对……更感兴趣”、think more highly of“更看重……(评价)”均不符合主旨;pay more attention to“更关注……”,符合语境。

For example, a number of research studies found that social science majors had achieved greater managerial(管理) success than those who had technical training or pre-professional courses.
