After a long, tiring day at work, Amara took a shared ride home. Seated in the back of the car, she was lost in her thoughts when a woman joined her. She looked at the stranger, a middle-aged woman with a bag in one hand.
A few minutes later, Amara saw the woman pulling out some drawings carefully from the bag and putting them on her lap (大腿部). Amara couldn’t help but look at her drawings. Seeing her, the woman smiled and said, “I hope you like the drawings.”
“I love them! They are amazing!” Amara said. “By the way, I am Amara. Nice to meet you.”
“I am Geeth. Nice to meet you too,” the woman said. They then started a conversation that quickly shifted (转变) from drawings to their favorite artists, books and movies.
When they were talking, Geeth got a call from her teenage daughter. She was cooking dinner and had some questions about a certain dish. Geeth patiently answered all her questions.
“Your daughter is cooking dinner?” asked Amara.
“Yes. She is cooking dinner and helping me with the housework. She has given me a helping hand since her father died a few years ago,” Geeth said. “Because of her, I have time to do the things I’ve always wanted to do, like drawing.”
Geeth’s words made Amara think of her mother. Her mother also brought up her and her sister alone, but no one ever asked her about her interests or dreams. Amara felt ▲ for not realizing her mother’s sacrifices (牺牲). She couldn’t wait to give her a big hug and she would care more about her mother.

The five-second rule is a popular idea that says if your food falls on the floor, it’s still safe to eat as long as you pick it up within five seconds. But is this true?
Scientists have tested the five-second rule, and most of them agree that it’s not a good guideline (指导原则) on food safety. How long the food stays on the floor doesn’t matter as much as two other things: what kind of food it is and where it lands. For example, wet foods, like fruits, are easier to get dirty. They pick up more bacteria (细菌) than dry foods, like biscuits. This is because bacteria can travel more easily in water.
The floor surface also makes a difference. Scientists have done tests on different floor surfaces, like metal, tiles (瓷砖), and carpets (地毯), to see which one lets bacteria get on food the most. Guess what? Food that fell on carpets picked up the fewest bacteria. This is because carpets have small fibers (纤维) that don’t let food touch much of their surface, while smooth surfaces like tiles have a bigger area for bacteria to get on the food.
However, picking up food quickly can still help keep it cleaner, because the longer it stays on the floor, the more chances there are for bacteria to get on it. But even if it’s just for a second, some bacteria can still get on the food. This makes the five-second rule a questionable practice for making sure food is safe to eat.
43. What’s the five-second rule about?
A Food safety. B. Food waste. C. Food business. D. Food production.
44. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Dry foods are safer to eat.
B. The floor surface makes food dirty.
C. Bacteria can make food taste worse.
D. Wet foods are easier to get dirty than dry foods.
45. Which floor surface makes food pick up the fewest bacteria?
A. Tiles. B. Metal. C. Carpets. D. Wood.
46. What does the passage mainly tell us about the five-second rule?
A. It shows how to pick up food quickly.
B It’s not useful for keeping food clean at all.
C. It works best on food that falls on a wet floor.
D. It’s not a good way to decide if food is safe to eat.
47. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To explain a fun fact. B. To correct a wrong opinion.
C. To share an interesting story. D. To describe a new invention.
D
There are many interesting ways to learn about our world. Sometimes, scientists use their senses to study nature. Other times, they use tools to collect information. Recently, drones (无人驾驶飞机) have become a big help for scientists.
Drones can travel far and fit into small spaces, especially the ones that are hard for people to reach. For example, scientists can send a drone to check the size of the ice shelf (冰架) in Antarctica or find out when new icebergs might break off in the Arctic Ocean.
Drones can also go underwater. Some drones can enter lakes or even the deepest parts of the ocean. They can help scientists learn more about our oceans and the life in them.
Drones are also great for studying pollution. They can fly into the air and find pollution. They can see where the pollution comes from and where it goes. This information helps scientists understand how to keep our air clean and safe for everyone.
Another exciting use of drones is watching wild animals. Scientists use drones to study whales. They can also count animal populations and help scientists know when an endangered animal is in trouble.
How would you like to look into the mouth of a volcano (火山)? Does that sound dangerous? Drones have made it much safer. Instead of risking their lives, scientists send drones to fly over volcanoes. These drones take pictures and assemble information that can help scientists see volcanic activity and even predict volcanic eruptions (爆发).
Weather is another area where drones are helpful. Scientists can use drones to check things like temperature and pressure. With drones, scientists can make better predictions about the weather.
So, what would you want to study with a drone? Would you watch wild animals in the forest, visit the Amazon rainforest or create maps of new areas? With all the different kinds of drones available, the possibilities are endless!
48. According to Paragraph 1, which word may scientists use to describe drones?
A. Useful. B. Natural. C. Expensive. D. Interesting.
49. Which of the following questions can be answered in Paragraph 4?
A. Can drones cut pollution? B. Can drones predict pollution?
C. Can drones lead to pollution? D. Can drones help study pollution?
50. The underlined word “assemble” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. Collect B. need C. change D. add
51. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards learning about the world with drones?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Uncertain. D. Disappointed.
52. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
(①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2... )
A. ①/②③④⑤⑥⑦⑧ B. ①②③④⑤⑥⑦/⑧
C. ①/②③④⑤⑥⑦/⑧ D. ①/②/③④⑤⑥⑦⑧

C
A. Food safety. B. Food waste.
B. It’s not useful for keeping food clean at all.
【答案】43. A 44. D 45. C 46. D 47. B

文章第三段提到“Food that fell on carpets picked up the fewest bacteria.”,明确指出地毯使食物沾染的细菌最少。
【46题详解】
文章最后一段提到“This makes the five-second rule a questionable practice for making sure food is safe to eat.”,总结全文表明五秒法则并非判断食物安全的可靠方法。
【47题详解】
文章开篇提出五秒法则的流行说法,随后通过科学实验反驳其可靠性,最终目的是纠正这一错误观念。
①/②/③④⑤⑥⑦⑧

【答案】例文
With the development of society, environmental problems are becoming more and more serious. It’s time for us to live a green lifestyle to protect our planet.
Nowadays, pollution is a big issue. For example, air pollution makes the air dirty, and water pollution makes many rivers and lakes polluted. Also, resource waste is common, like wasting electricity and water.
In my daily life, I do several things. I always bring my own shopping bags when shopping to reduce plastic use. I turn off the lights and water taps when not in use. And I often take public transportation instead of driving.
I hope more people can join in. We can start with small actions. For example, we can do garbage classification. Different kinds of garbage are put into different bins. Also, we can participate in tree planting activities. By doing these, we can make our environment better.
I believe that if everyone does their part, our future will be much more beautiful. Let’s all live a green life!
