Traced back to the Song (960—1279) and Yuan (1279—1368) dynasties, Fujian Tulou is a kind of traditional Chinese rural (农村) home used by the Hakka people in the mountainous areas of Fujian Province. These large, closed, and strong earth buildings were added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2008.
China is developing and modernizing (现代化), but it hasn’t given up its traditional culture. Instead, it’s keeping its cultural heritage alive and passing it on, both at home and abroad. At the tulou scenic area, you can always see travelers taking videos with their phones or cameras. Local people may invite visitors to their homes for a short tour, sharing stories about the inside design of the tulou that their ancestors (祖先) passed down. There are also some stands and shops offering visitors the opportunity to dress in the clothes of the local She ethnic minority (畲族) for photos. These photos are like a window to know the traditional life for local people.
Usually, the ink rubbing workshop (墨拓工作坊) is also popular. The workshop leader guides people, showing them how to place a piece of red paper on a woodcut of a tulou.
Fujian Tulou is a good example of this. In Zhangzhou’s Nanjing County, the government is keeping over 15,000 tulou buildings. The tulou attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world.
