When I learned that our community library was hosting a Book Worm Challenge,I got excited. My granddaughter liked reading books and I needed a little inspiration to improve the quality of the books I read,so I suggested we sign up.The goal was to read fifty books in a year.I am an English teacher. This didn’t seem like much of a challenge. Then,I read the small print. There were fifty different types ranging from historical non-fiction to a book with a red cover. Not so easy after all.
The experience created a bond with my granddaughter. We read a couple of the same novels, but mostly read different titles. However,we had interesting conversations based on the similar themes in our books and we discussed the authors’ writing styles, range of words, and our favorites.
Initially, inspired by a stubborn need to meet the goal,I forced myself to make time to visit the worlds and characters of the novels. In the past, excuses created reasons to procrastinate (拖延),but now I found books provided a better alternative. When a new TV series was shown for the first time,I discovered books brought greater joy and engagement. When the house needed cleaning,I remembered it would be dirty again tomorrow. When the dog wanted attention,I held her in one hand and a book in the other. And when a task could not be postponed,I turned on an audiobook.
After a year, reading became a habit. My life became more satisfying as I grew intellectually. The realistic stories of life replaced the unrealistic dramas on the screen.Perhaps the greatest benefit I got through my increased reading was the impact it had on my writing.Reading improved my vocabulary, modeled unique styles, provided new insights, and inspired new ideas and a desire to copy other authors’ success.
When I began, fifty reading types looked frightening, but my granddaughter and I both won the title of Extreme Book Worm.

(2025安徽芜湖高三期末)
About 400 years later,William Shakespeare(1564-1616) is still widely celebrated as a great wordsmith and playwright(剧作家).But he was not the only great master of dramatic writing to die in 1616,and he is certainly not the only writer to have left a lasting impact on theatre. While less famous worldwide,Tang Xianzu(1550-1616) is considered one of China’s greatest playwrights and is highly admired in this country with ancient literary and dramatic traditions.
Tang was born in 1550 in Linchuan,Jiangxi Province, and worked as a government official until,in 1598,he retired to focus on writing.Unlike Shakespeare, who produced plenty of plays and poems,Tang wrote only four major plays:The Purple Hairpin,A Dream Under the Southern Bough,The Handan Dream and The Peony Pavilion — the last of which is widely considered to be his masterpiece. In the latter three plays,Tang employs dream narrative to explore human nature beyond the social and political constraints(约束) of the feudal system(封建制度) of his time.It is a similar narrative structure that we find in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Tang lived towards the end of the Ming Dynasty and his success was partly due to the growth of theatre as an artistic practice during his lifetime. As in England, theatre became hugely popular in China, with public theatres opening in different cities and travelling performance groups becoming common.Theatrical audiences started to collect in open public spaces, and theatre as a popular form of entertainment found its place outside palaces. However, unlike in Shakespeare’s time, there was hardly any mix of the noble and commoners at theatrical events.
During this time, the way in which dramas were enjoyed, spread and performed changed.Initially,Chinese dramas put emphasis on poetic language and were circulated in book form,to be read as if they were novels. They were seldom performed. However, from the 16th century,Kunqu opera,a form of musical drama, spread from southern China and became an important form of Chinese dramas.
While Tang and Shakespeare lived in a world away from each other, they have in common the humanity of their works, their heroic figures, their love for language, the lasting popularity and the anniversary during which we still celebrate them.
8.Why does the author refer to Shakespeare throughout this article about Tang?
A.To compare the writing styles of the two writers.
B.To emphasize Tang’s importance in literature.
C.To assess the achievements of these two great writers.
D.To examine the different influences of Tang and Shakespeare.
9.What distinguishes The Purple Hairpin from Tang’s other major plays?
A.It does not rely heavily on dream narrative.
B.It is widely considered to be his best work.
C.It is the only play to be publicly performed.
D.It challenges the feudal system of ancient China.
10.What feature was shared by both English and Chinese theatre during Tang’s lifetime?
A.Music and poetry were present in most performances.
B.The popularity of public theatrical performances grew rapidly.
C.Different social classes often attended the same performances.
D.Most plays were written to be read as novels rather than to be performed.
11.Which of the following would the author probably agree with?
A.Tang’s plays are as remarkable as his poems.
B.Tang’s plays are more famous than Shakespeare’s.
C.Tang and Shakespeare knew of each other’s works.
D.Tang is one of the best playwrights in Chinese history.
Ⅳ.七选五
It is harder to get your kids to read a book now with tablets and smartphones being so prevalent(盛行的).Actually, you don’t have to force your kids into reading but rather encourage them to find enjoyment in it.
1 You can of course say no to any books that seem inappropriate, but kids will be more likely to read more if they are enjoying what they’re reading and they feel like they have a say in the book that they’re reading.
Reading is usually a solitary (独自的) activity. 2 That’s why you can read books together. When you’re reading together, ask questions like “What did you notice on that page?” or “Did you see that...?” to make sure they are paying attention. 3 Doing voices is a great way, which can always make kids laugh.Do make reading together a cuddle(依偎) moment. It can’t be a rushed activity.Take a breath and let the day go,and then move into story time. 4
Getting kids into books can take many different forms.Traditional books are great, but have you thought about getting them into stories via audiobooks(有声读物)? 5 And once they’re excited to hear the rest of the story, continue it at home, whether it’s with a paper version of the book or more audiobooks.Kids can also listen on their own with headphones if they prefer to listen by themselves.
A.Try to make it fun.
B.However, your child might not like that aspect of it.
C.It’s a nice release of tension in the evening before bed.
D.Start seeking out books that can be relatable to your kids.
E.Parents force kids to read a certain number of pages per day.
F.Best of all,you can listen to an audiobook together while in the car.
G.A great way to have kids reading is to let them choose what they want to read.
