The new study focused on chimpanzees, bonobos,Western and Eastern gorillas, and Sumatran orangutans. These apes were “excellent candidates” for this study because they “engage in social play, show laughter, and display relatively sophisticated understandings of others’ expectations,” said Isabelle Laumer, the study’s lead author. The researchers watched videos of 34 apes living in zoos. They looked for examples of teasing behavior, defined as behavior where an ape(the “teaser”) attempts to provoke a response in another specific individual(the “target”).By analyzing 75 hours of video recordings, they found 142 examples of playful teasing. All four kinds of apes engaged in the behavior.Examples included poking another ape, pulling on their hair,or waving in the middle of their field of vision. If there was no response to the action, the teaser would keep trying to provoke the target into responding. The animals typically engaged in the behaviors when they were calm and relaxed, indicating that their actions were not meant to be aggressive. In most cases,a juvenile ape teased an older adult, which is similar to the way human children tease others. Discovering teasing in great apes suggests that the basic foundations in the brain for this behavior first appeared in an ancestor common to humans and these great apes at least 13 million years ago.Laumer hopes this study will inspire further research into playful teasing in animals, which could lead to a better understanding of where this behavior comes from.“We also hope that this study raises awareness of the similarities we share with our closest relatives and the importance of protecting these critically endangered animals,” she said. 1.Why were the four kinds of apes chosen as excellent candidates? A.They are better than other apes. B.They are very intelligent. C.They have a sense of playfulness. D.They are closely related to humans. 2.What can we learn about the apes in the study? A.Young apes always teased the elders. B.Their teasing meant no harm to others. C.The teaser stopped teasing if the target didn’t respond. D.Their behavior often involved unexpected actions. 3.How did Laumer probably find the study? A.Helpful. B.Regretful. C.Fruitless. D.Ground-breaking. 4.What’s a suitable title for the text? A.Apes Share Similar Social Behavior with Human Children B.Exploring Apes’ Sense of Humor Helps the Study of the Brain C.Understanding Apes’ Teasing Aids in Their Conservation D.Apes’ Teasing Offers Insights into the Roots of Human Playfulness B Reaching out to support a person when they’re under stress is always a good idea.In fact,a new study suggests that support could be especially important for someone whose genetic quality makes them more likely to develop depression. The study shows the importance of social support to buffer the risk of developing depression symptoms in general. The study uses data from two very different groups of people under stress:new doctors in the most intense year of training, and older adults whose beloved ones recently died. The finding shows the greatest impact of social support in those with the highest risk scores for depression. Compared to other groups of individuals in the study who had low depression risk scores, the doctors and widows with higher risk scores had higher rates of depression after they lost social support, but also they had lower rates of depression when they gained social support during stressful times. Sen,who is the director of the Eisenberg Family Depression Center adds that even as genetic research reveals more of the DNA variation(变异) related to depression vulnerability, learning how that variation leads to depression is crucial.“Further understanding the different genetic maps associated with sensitivity to loss of social support, lack of sleep, excessive work stress and other risk factors could help us develop personalized guidance for depression prevention,” he said.“In the meantime, these findings reaffirm how important social connections, social support and individual sensitivity to the social environment are as factors in well-being and preventing depression.” Besides, the data used in the study is based on people of European origin, which limits the ability to generalize the findings to people of other backgrounds.Sen noted that additional work is being done to collect scores based on depression-related genetic characteristics in other populations including people of East Asian and African populations. 5.What does the new study find? A.Depression can be passed on among generations. B.One’s genetic quality is related to depression. C.Social support can reduce genetic depression risk. D.People without support tend to feel depressed. 6.How do the researchers carry out the study? A.By collecting data. B.By giving examples. C.By studying papers. D.By doing experiments. 7.What does the underlined word “vulnerability” mean in paragraph 4? A.Tendency. B.Weakness. C.Awareness. D.Reduction. 8.What can we learn from the text? A.Depression will lead to DNA variation. B.Genetic maps can guide us to well-being. C.Further data is to be collected for the study. D.Individual sensitivity is a great depression risk. Ⅳ. Four Daily Habits of Leaders Leadership is a collection of key skills that you can develop. Here, let’s share the daily habits that will put you in charge as a leader. They see opportunities where others see challenges. 1 ,but the question is what we do with it.On a rainy day,you can blame the sky,or take the opportunity to sell umbrellas to those who don’t have them.Leaders see the opportunity in situations, and more importantly, help others to find it.The person who sees forgotten factories on abandoned streets thinks:Hey,why don’t we grow produce in those spaces? That gives rise to entire industries like urban farming.   2 .  As a leader, you are the ultimate role model.People are watching you all the time:How you walk through the hallway, what you wear, how you treat people, when you get to the office and when you leave.Good leaders take great care of themselves, with enough sleep, exercise and good eating. They know that is the fuel to keep themselves at peak performance. They’re curious about the present. Leaders are interested in what’s going on and coming next. 3 .They prefer the company of real people and are eager to learn something new.  They take risks thoughtfully. Great leaders have plans, but are willing to abandon them when necessary. 4 .For example, when Esbe came out of school, she realized that there weren’t a lot of opportunities for her scientific field. Her father was writing a book,so she put her energy into helping him publish it. 5 .And there was an opportunity to create a business to help those who wanted to self-publish.So she started that business and she finally made it.  A.They share ownership with others B.They know that they’re role models C.We all have the same information in front of us D.They carefully change a certain risk into an opportunity E.They want to play with new technology, and meet new people F.Then she realized the self-publishing world was a bit of a Wild West G.She immediately stopped this kind of risk and tried something totally new Ⅴ. My Favourite Food ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案 Ⅰ.1.phenomena 2.mineral 3.needles 4.correspond 5.database 6.suspect 7.Victims 8.paragraphs 9.identification 10.astronomer Ⅱ.1.the same as he did 2.known as the City of Light 3.the number of which 4.as a result of the storm 5.in order not to be recognized Ⅲ. 根据第二段中的“These apes were ‘excellent candidates’ for this study because they ‘engage in social play, show laughter, and display relatively sophisticated understandings of others’ expectations,’ said Isabelle Laumer, the study’s lead author.” 根据第四段中的“The animals typically engaged in the behaviors when they were calm and relaxed, indicating that their actions were not meant to be aggressive.” 根据最后一段中的“‘We also hope that this study raises awareness of the similarities we share with our closest relatives and the importance of protecting these critically endangered animals,’she said.” 根据第一段中的“If you enjoy goofing around and annoying your loved ones, you’re not alone;four kinds of great apes have been found to engage in playful teasing.Great apes are a family of primates that are very closely related to humans,so this discovery could shed light on how a sense of humor and playfulness emerged in people.” 根据第一段中的“In fact,a new study suggests that support could be especially important for someone whose genetic quality makes them more likely to develop depression.” 根据第二段中的“The study uses data from two very different groups of people under stress:new doctors in the most intense year of training, and older adults whose beloved ones recently died.” 结合画线词后半句“learning how that variation leads to depression is crucial.” 3.E 根据下文“They prefer the company of real people and are eager to learn something new.” 4.D 根据主题句“They take risks thoughtfully.”以及上文“Great leaders have plans, but are willing to abandon them when necessary.” 5.F 根据上文“For example, when Esbe came out of school...into helping him publish it.”以及下文“And there was an opportunity to create a business to help those who wanted to self-publish.” Ⅴ. My Favourite Food  Of all the foods I have ever tried, stinky tofu is my favourite. I like it because of its unique flavour and smell! As the name suggests, the smell is terrible but surprisingly, the taste is actually quite mild—it tastes like fried tofu with less of the bean flavour. The sauce makes it taste even more delicious. As I take each bite, the crisp and juicy flavour slowly fills my mouth. How can I forget such a tasty snack? Whenever I feel unhappy,I eat this snack and it does make me feel better.
