Section 9 Reading Club (自修课) [课时检测] Ⅰ. A Like many others who are autistic (患自闭症的), Bobby Latheron has known for most of his life that there was something that made him different from his peers. As a child, he often preferred spending time with adults. Throughout school, Bobby struggled. He suffered from panic attacks that would cause him to run out of the room crying, which made teachers view him as a “naughty child”. Then, at around 13 years old, he was officially diagnosed (诊断) with autism. But because autism was still so misunderstood, this didn't improve his situation by much. Still, Bobby persevered and made it to university. But after a while, he struggled academically here, too. Things were looking up when he switched to art, design, and photography, but he simply couldn't do it. That's when a kind teacher changed his life for the better. “I was telling one of the music teachers about my life with autism — my relationships and my struggles,” Bobby tells the reporter. “She said, ‘Why don't you write a book about your life?’ So I did.” This is how My World in My Words by Bobby Latheron came to be. When writing this book, Bobby remained incredibly focused. Finding the inspiration to write his first book has changed Bobby's life in so many ways. He's met others who are like himself, plus, he's even managed to secure a job he loves. He has even given multiple interviews for various news and radio stations. Best of all, this new direction in life has given Bobby the opportunity to help others like him to feel less alone and, in doing so, he has proven to himself that he's far more capable than he once believed. “I'm not here to say it has always been perfect and that I haven't made mistakes,” Bobby tells the reporter, “but you have to learn in life.” 1.What can we infer about Bobby's childhood? A.He behaved as a grown-up. B.He had a happy childhood. C.He was misunderstood at school. D.He got along well with his teachers. 根据第二段中“He suffered from panic attacks that would cause him to run out of the room crying, which made teachers view him as a ‘naughty child’.” 2.What gave Bobby the idea of writing? A.His desire for success. B.A teacher's advice. C.His unhappy experience. D.A wish to battle loneliness. 根据第四段中“She said, ‘Why don't you write a book about your life?’ So I did.” 3.What is the main idea of paragraph 5? A.Bobby benefited from his book. B.Bobby got more appreciation. C.Bobby became more popular. D.Bobby got a job opportunity. 4.Which word can best describe Bobby? A.Inspiring. B.Generous. C.Modest. D.Talented. 根据倒数第二段中“this new direction in life has given Bobby the opportunity to help others ... than he once believed”可知,鲍比通过写书获得了更多的自信,而且他还开始帮助其他的自闭症患者;由此推断,他的成功会给他人带来激励,因此他是“鼓舞人心的”。 B I was surfing the Internet, planning for our 15th-anniversary trip when a perfect spot attracted me: The Shire of Montana, a “hobbit house”, which Jim, my husband had dreamed about. I knew he'd be impressed. And our six-year-old daughter, Aurora, would like it, too. I was about to book our reservation when I saw a note on the website: No kids allowed. That ruined everything! Luckily, there was an email address on the site. I plucked up the courage to contact the owner. Soon, a reply arrived, saying, “If you promise that your daughter is responsible and will not touch, she can come.” I was relieved, thinking Aurora was a good kid. “This will be okay,” I wrote back. The day finally arrived. We piled into the car. I couldn't help being excited, imagining Jim and Aurora's reactions. We passed a sign that read, “The adventure begins ...” Turning onto the Hobbit Lane, I felt a pang of anxiety. As soon as we got out of the car, I pulled Aurora aside. “Children aren't usually allowed here,” I said. “So you have to be very, very careful. You can look at everything, but don't touch.” I explained the rule and how terrible it would be to damage anything. Aurora's eyes widened at my no-nonsense tone. “I promise, Mom,” she said. Obviously, my concern was superfluous. We spent several days at The Shire. Aurora was delighted at each discovery but she never disturbed a thing. She took her responsibility to protect the owner's work seriously. It turned out that respecting boundaries didn't take away the beauty and wonder; it allowed The Shire to remain beautiful and wonderful into the future. Not so different from a marriage, I thought. Now I understood why we went to this place to celebrate our fifteenth anniversary. Jim and I moved through life side by side as a couple, and we'd learned to accept each other's individuality and boundaries as well. Marriage is full of surprises, challenges and adventures. The key to making it work is respecting each other. 5.What can we learn from the first paragraph? A.The author met a problem while planning a trip. B.The author and her husband had been married for 6 years. C.Aurora didn't want to take a trip to The Shire of Montana. D.The trip was ruined because the author didn't reserve a room. 根据第一段中“I was about to book our reservation when I saw a note on the website: No kids allowed. That ruined everything!” 6.Why did the author feel a pang of anxiety? A.She felt it a burden to take care of her daughter. B.She doubted if her daughter would behave well. C.She worried her daughter wouldn't be admitted. D.She wasn't sure whether her husband would like the place. 根据第三段中“We passed a sign that read ... I explained the rule and how terrible it would be to damage anything.” 7.What does the underlined word “superfluous” in paragraph 4 mean? A.Considerable. B.Important. C.Unnecessary. D.Common. 8.What does the author want to convey through the text? A.Don't give up until you try your best. B.Good role models are essential for teaching kids. C.Respect contributes to a happy and lasting marriage. D.Obeying the rules is important when dealing with people. 根据最后一段中“Jim and I moved through life side by side as a couple ... The key to making it work is respecting each other.” Criticism from others can be difficult to take, especially if the person delivering the criticism isn't exactly subtle (含蓄的) about it.So how should we deal with it? __9__ Try to separate the criticism from the environment in which it was given.__10__ However, you should also try to calmly look at what's being said and see if there are clues for your personal growth.Pretend the person isn't talking about you, and try to read between the lines. __11__ This is where you listen and say “Okay, that makes sense.”, or “I can come up with a plan to do that.” Remember, haters are going to hate, but even they sometimes hate for reasons worth considering. All you need to do is keep what's applicable and ignore the rest. Turn those useful opinions into goals.__12__ If someone complains that your writing is too long, for example, set a to-do to remove the unnecessary facts from your work.If your boss complains you always wait until the last minute to complete tasks, set your due-dates a day earlier than they're really due, so you get to work sooner. Adjust your attitude. You can do all of this and still get depressed when someone tells you how you can improve.Attitude is the key here.__13__ It's easier said than done, but knowing your strengths and being ready to hear and accept your weaknesses is the most powerful thing you can do. A.Focus on the meaningful part of the criticism. B.How you react to criticism depends on its intention. C.Look at criticism as a chance to grow and get better. D.Here are some ways you can get benefits from criticism. E.It's important to never let the opportunity for criticism pass you by. F.It's normal to be defensive when criticized and to react accordingly. G.Once you have specific, practical tips, turn them into measurable to-dos. G项中的“to-dos”与下文中的“set a to-do”相呼应。 13.
