An about 2-meter-wide alley, or “Liu Chi Xiang” in Chinese, now attracts floods of visitors in east China's Anhui Province. It has a household's ancient story hidden behind it, which vividly explains the essence of tolerance and non-contention widely accepted in China.
During the Period of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, one of his ministers, Zhang Ying, received a letter from his hometown of Tongcheng City in Anhui one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family quarreled with their neighbour, Wu's family, over the two sides' house boundary. The local court struggled to reach a final judgement since both families enjoyed high reputation in Tongcheng.
Zhang's family wrote the letter hoping that Zhang, a high-ranking official in the imperial palace, could force the Wu family to give in.However, Zhang wrote a poem back saying, “Writing a letter from home, miles away, just for a wall. All that argument over one meter or two.Looking at the ten-thousand-mile long Great Wall, long gone is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang.”
His reply enlightened the family members as the wall was merely a temporary structure. It was the close relationship with their neighbours that mattered.
They decided to move their wall about one meter back for their neighbour. In turn, the Wu family was deeply touched by their generosity and retreated another meter backward in building their wall.It created an about two-meter-wide narrow “alley” between the houses.
More than 30 decades later in modern China, Tongcheng has become a national historical and cultural city, a statement released by the State Council said.
Among all the valuable historical sites in the city, the narrow alley is one of the popular attractions. It serves as enlightenment, inspiring people to observe public morals and cherish harmony, especially in disagreements and conflicts.
Many locals still live in tiny houses next to each other and share walls with their neighbours. Some problems like noise and division of responsibility when it comes to a broken wall are commonplaces.About 98 percent are successfully handled thanks to the virtues of modesty and harmony rooted in the local culture.

When romantic partners argue over things like finances, jealousy, or other interpersonal issues, they tend to employ their current feelings as fuel for a heated argument. But thinking about the future helps overcome relationship conflicts, according to a study by the University of Waterloo just published online in Social Psychological and Personality Science. Alex Huynh, a doctoral candidate in psychology, is the lead author of the study, which he published with Igor Grossmann from the University of Waterloo, and Daniel Yang from Yale University.
Previous research has shown that third-perspective reasoning can be a positive strategy for reconciliation (调解) of interpersonal struggles. Huynh and his collaborators (合作者) investigated whether the similar benefit can be induced by simply thinking about the future. Study participants were instructed to reflect on a recent conflict with a romantic partner or a close friend. One group of participants was then asked to describe how they would feel about the conflict one year in the future, while another group was asked to describe how they feel in the present.
The team examined participants' written responses through a text-analysis program for their use of pronouns such as I, me, she, he. These choices of pronouns were used to capture participants' focus on the feelings and behaviour of those involved in the conflict. Written responses were also examined for forgiveness and reinterpreting the conflict more positively, both of which implied the participants' use of reasoning strategies.
The researchers found that envisioning (展望) future relationships affected both participants' focus on their feelings and their reasoning strategies. As a result, participants reported more positivity about their relationships altogether, especially when study participants extended their thinking about the relationships a year into the future.
“Our study demonstrates that adopting a future-oriented perspective in the context of a relationship conflict — reflecting on how one might feel a year from now — may be a valuable coping tool for one's psychological happiness and relationship well-being,” said Huynh.

10.What do we know about the study?
A.The reasoning strategies in participants' written responses were well worthy of note.
B.Study participants described their recent relationships with their romance partners or friends.

Human judgments can be influenced by irrelevant factors such as mood and even weather. The Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman refers to this chance variability as “noise”.Noise leads to inaccurate and unfair decisions. It's around people all the time, though individuals fail to notice it.
The problem of bias (偏差) in decisions is well known and there are strategies that people can adopt to minimise it.But noise is not distinct precisely.“It becomes visible only when we think statistically about a group of similar judgments.Indeed, it then becomes hard to miss,” Daniel Kahneman wrote in a new book.
The unwanted but common variability does make much difference. In a courthouse, one judge would allow refugees asylum (难民庇护) in 88% of cases while another would do so 5% of the time.Doctors are more likely to give wrong medicines at the end of a long day.An insurance firm's agents assess insurance fees that vary by 55%, a difference that is five times greater than its management has imagined.
Noise_is_not_always_for_the_birds.When different investors size up a trade or book reviewers reach different assessments, the diversity of opinions is desirable.More commonly it creates problems.Yet it can be reduced.
The solutions given in the book include a “noise audit (审计)” to measure the degree of disagreement on the same cases and to quantify the variations.Another one is to get rid of people altogether.Statistical models and pre-determined rules in many cases are more accurate.Kahneman welcomes AI to make many decisions in society, but acknowledges that people tend to resist its answers, for lack of the personal and emotional quality in decision-making — and believe it leads to inferior decisions.

12.In which aspect does noise differ from bias?
A.It is less noticeable.
B.It is harder to avoid.
C.It has deeper effects.
D.It happens more often.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The problem of bias in decisions is well known ...But noise is not distinct precisely.”可知,决策偏差问题广为人知,并且人们可以采用一些策略以减少偏差,但干扰信息不太明显。
13.Why does the author mention the examples in paragraph 3?
A.To prove the commonness of noise.
B.To introduce the factors in decision-making.
C.To explain the great impact of noise.
D.To show inaccuracy of people's decisions.
解析:选C 推理判断题。第三段首句提到这一不受欢迎但很常见的变量(即干扰信息)有很大影响,接着列举三个例子来支撑这一观点。由此可推知,作者提到这些例子是为了解释干扰信息的巨大影响。
14.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 imply?
A.Noise needs much attention.
B.Noise can be good sometimes.
C.Noise works in various fields.
D.Noise rarely causes big mistakes.
解析:选B 句意理解题。根据第四段中的“When different investors size up a trade or book reviewers reach different assessments, the diversity of opinions is desirable.”可知,作者举了另外两个例子来说明有时多样性的意见是可取的。由此可推断,画线句应表示干扰信息并非总是不好的。
15.What's people's general attitude to AI's use in decision-making?
A.Hopeful. B.Concerned.
C.Tolerant. D.Opposed.
解析:选D 观点态度题。根据最后一段中的“but acknowledges that people tend to resist its answers ...and believe it leads to inferior decisions”可知,人们对利用人工智能进行决策的普遍态度应是反对的。

Ways to Relieve Stress
Recently a survey was carried out about ways to relieve stress. The majority of the respondents watched videos or listened to music to relax. Comparatively, only a small number of students chose exercise or talking to others.
While videos and music are fun, spending too much time on them may cause us to ignore more important things. There are actually better options available. For example, doing exercise or talking with friends not only relieves stress but also brings us closer.
So, if we feel stressed, it's useful to try different ways to relax which can help both our body and mind. That's all. Thank you!
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was studying for a huge science test when my little brother and sister burst into the kitchen, singing at the top of their lungs: Squirrels (松鼠) in the garden, Squirrels in the tree, I'm a happy squirrel, Look at me ... Then, just as soon as they finished, they started singing all over again.
“Wow! That's a pretty catchy song,” I said after the third time around. But I asked them to stop singing as I was trying to study.
“Sorry, Zona,” said Indi. “But we really do need to keep singing it. Our music teacher said so!” “Yeah,” said Tex. “Our class is putting on a squirrel play for Parents' Night, and we have to memorize every single word by Friday!” Indi added that they had to make their own tails and ears and dumped (倾倒) out a bag full of furry costume parts. “Can you help us?”
“Maybe in a little while,” I said. “Right now, I need to read my book.”
Tex and Indi sang that song while they were making their costumes, while they were doing their housework, and even while they were brushing their teeth!
Since Tex and Indi squeaked (吱吱叫) and sang every day that week, I wasn't as prepared as I wanted to be for my test on Friday. And in the middle of taking my test, the squirrel song started playing over and over in my head. It was almost impossible for me to focus on the last few questions.
When I got home that afternoon, all I wanted to do was a rest on the couch. The only thing was, Tex and Indi had beaten me to it.
“Can you please let me sit too?” I complained. “I had a bad day!” “We had a bad day too!” said Tex. “Yeah,” said Indi. “A group of kids in our class got sick, so tonight's play is canceled!”
We were just three unhappy persons sitting in silence for a really long time. Even though I had been complaining about their singing, it broke my heart to see them disappointed. They had been so excited about the show. I said after a while, “I can't let all of your practising go to waste.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
“We don't want to waste it, either, but what can we do?” Indi asked helplessly. _______

“We don't want to waste it, either, but what can we do?” Indi asked helplessly. “We can hold the Parents' Night by ourselves that can be arranged in our own house.” Hearing my words, Tex and Indi jumped up from the couch excitedly with eyes flashing, “Yes, Zona, you're right. We can put on the squirrel play for our parents who can be our audience! I believe they will like it!” Indi agreed, turning around cheerfully. In the next few hours, we began to make preparations respectively. Tex and Indi continued to practise the song while making up and I was in charge of setting up the performance hall for the night. After everything was ready, I arranged for our parents to attend the performance.
As the lights went up, two cute little squirrels scampered (蹦蹦跳跳) into the middle of the stage. “Squirrels in the garden, Squirrels in the tree, I'm a happy squirrel, Look at me ...” While singing at the top of their lungs, Tex and Indi put on a vivid and perfect performance. As the music stopped, our parents stood up in excitement and kept clapping loudly. “What a wonderful performance! Thank you, babies! You're so great!” Mum praised. “Zona helped us, Mum. It was our joint effort that made us do it.” Indi said, holding my hand happily. “Oh, my dear, you're the best, I'm proud of you all.” Mum hugged us slightly and gently. The squirrel song started to play over and over in my head again. What a pleasant night!
