as if(=as though)意为“似乎;好像;仿佛”,在句中引导表语从句或方式状语从句。
(1)如果所引导的从句表示的是真实的或极有可能发生的情况,从句要用陈述语气。
(2)当说话人所陈述的是不真实的或极少可能发生或存在的情况时,从句用虚拟语气。与现在事实相反,用一般过去时(be动词用were);与过去事实相反,用had done;与将来事实相反,用would/could/might+动词原形。
(3)as if/though引导的从句中的主语和主句的主语一致,且含有be动词时,从句中的主语和be动词常常可以省略。

句中“their faces covered”是独立主格结构,作伴随状语。
(1)独立主格结构的逻辑主语与主句的主语不一致,它独立存在。该结构在句中一般作状语,表示时间、条件、原因、伴随状况等。
(2)常见的独立主格结构有:名词/代词+形容词/副词/介词短语/不定式/现在分词/过去分词等。
注意:当独立主格结构中的名词为单数可数名词时,其前通常不加冠词。
“两层级”学通用活句式
(1)通过“句式变换”弄明句式结构(改为独立主格结构)
