In the book, each part of the story goes straight to the point without confusing readers. The book doesn't include the events that happen to the boy in between. We see how the boy's needs increase to a point that the tree finally gives its trunk as he grows. It makes the book easy to read and understand. The writing style may seem plain and boring at first but we need to keep in mind that it is a children's book.If it weren't that way, then it would be unattractive to its young readers. The words used are very easy to understand. The phrase, “and the tree was happy”, is quite moving and shows the tree's love for the boy.The use of the word “need” also shows readers the attitude of the boy.The change from “need” to “want” in the end also tells readers the changes that the boy goes through. Though the book has been criticized as it can be understood in different ways, it is because of this that the book succeeds.Again the book is written for children.Different children have their own ways to understand the book and will consider it interesting. 4.What is the book mainly about? D.Its topics are varied. 根据第二段前两句和第三段首句“The words used are very easy to understand.” 6.What makes The Giving Tree popular? A.The comments kids gave. B.The writing style. C.The pictures in it. D.Different ways to understand it. 7.What is the author's purpose in writing the text? A.To comment on a book. B.To introduce a writer. C.To recommend a story. D.To give readers a lesson. HOW TO READ A POEM There's really only one reason why poetry has gotten a reputation for being so “difficult”: It demands your full attention.__8__ Follow Your Ears. It's okay to ask “What does it mean?” when you are reading a poem. But it's even better to ask “How does it sound?” __9__ Even if you can't understand a single thing about a poem's “subject” or “theme”, you can always say something — anything — about the sound of the words. __10__ OK, we're not saying you have to shout it from the rooftops. If you're embarrassed and want to lock yourself in the attic (阁楼) and read the poem in the quietest whisper, go ahead. But reading aloud is really an effective way to understand a poem, because reading even part of it aloud can totally change your perspective on how it works. Read in Different Places. Just like music, the experience of poetry changes depending on your mood and the environment.Read in as many different places as possible: at the beach, on a mountain, in the subway.__11__ Think Like a Poet. Here's a fun exercise.Go through the poem one line at a time, covering up the next line with your hand so you can't see it.Put yourself in the poet's shoes: __12__ If you start to think like this, you'll be able to appreciate all the different choices that go into making a poem. A.Be Patient. B.Read It Aloud. C.If all else fails, treat it like a song. D.If I had to write a line to come after this line, what would I put? E.So if you don't get it, set the poem aside and come back to it later. F.Here is a short list of tips that will make poems reading more enjoyable. G.Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery for a poem to really come alive. 8.选F 根据下面的小标题“Follow Your Ears.”“Read in Different Places.” 以及“Think Like a Poet.” 10.选B 根据下文“But reading aloud ...how it works.”
