Section 9 Reading Club (自修课) [课时检测] Ⅰ.阅读理解 A Lila Gleitman was driving her two-year-old daughter in the car when, going across a sharp turn, she advised her daughter to “hold on tight”.The kid responded, “Isn't that ‘tightly’?” It was a turning point in her career.Realising that her two-year-old already had an understanding of languages made Gleitman want to get into her child's head. She wondered: What does she know, and when does she know it? Gleitman turned those questions into a research career that helped define psycholinguistics (心理语言学).Her early interest coincided with Noam Chomsky, a frequent visitor to the University of Pennsylvania when she studied there. The two scholars considered that the mental systems which might produce the sentences you hear, are shaped by abstract rules that speakers may not even know that they know. An early piece of Gleitman's research, for example, researched small children's “telegraphic” speech, in which many words are left out: A kid might say “throw ball” rather than “throw me the ball”.This seems to imply that the child's knowledge is primitive. But she found that children obey instructions better when their parents use adult-style English than when they copy their kids' languages. So parents do not need to use “motherese” — her husband Henry's term — with their children. She found that their progressive mastery of language rules had little to do with how much (or little) motherese their caregivers used. As the learning process goes on, children deploy some remarkable strategies. They often seem to correctly guess what a word means after hearing it just once. The physical environment is an obvious encouragement (as when they hear “dog” and see one at the same time). But how would a child guess the meaning of the verb in “I believed that he lost his keys”? Gleitman noticed that the sentence structure is identical to those with other verbs that mean similar things: saw, remembered, worried and doubted.More broadly, it turned out that verbs which are similar in meaning tend to turn up in similar sentence structures. This helps children learn quickly, a process she called “syntactic bootstrapping (语法自举)”. 语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了Lila Gleitman因女儿的一句话改变了职业生涯,创立了心理语言学以及她和另外一位学者随后在儿童语言学习方面进行的一些研究。 1.What was the turning point in Gleitman's career? A.Her husband's persuasion. B.One suggestion from her professor. C.One sentence from her daughter. D.Her meeting with Noam Chomsky. 解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句和第二段第一句可知,女儿的一句话成了Gleitman事业的转折点。 2.When do kids follow their parents' instructions better? A.When the parents use “motherese”. B.When the parents use adult-style English. C.When the parents copy their kids' languages. D.When the parents adopt remarkable strategies. 解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第四段最后一句可知,Lila Gleitman发现当父母使用成人式英语时,孩子们能更好地听从他们的指示。 3.What does the underlined word “deploy” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Use. B.Plan. C.Change. D.Abandon. 解析:选A 词义猜测题。根据画线词后的“They often seem to correctly guess what a word means after hearing it just once.”可知,孩子们似乎经常会在听到一个词一次后立刻猜出这个词的正确含义。结合画线词所在句可推知,孩子们会运用一些策略。因此,deploy意为“利用”。 4.How does a kid know the meaning of a verb according to Gleitman? A.By looking it up in a dictionary. B.By being told by his or her parents. C.By learning it in his or her school. D.By guessing it from sentence structures. 解析:选D 推理判断题。根据最后一段最后两句可知,孩子们会从相似的句子结构中猜测出单词的含义。 B From self-driving cars to carebots (care+robots) for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2035 as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to change businesses. “The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia-Pacific.A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence. The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates. But the report states, “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs — just changing what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.“The growth of 20- to 40-person companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies,” it states. Another study by Pew Research Centre found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create”. “Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created.Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people, there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Jonathan Grudin told researchers. 语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了未来社会的人工智能大发展,大约50%的职业将消失,但失去职业并不等于丢掉工作,只是改变了人们的工作内容,更多的新工作会被创造出来。 5.Why are carebots mentioned? A.To give a definition. B.To provide an example. C.To make a comparison. D.To explain a theory. 解析:选B 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“From self-driving cars to carebots (care+robots) for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people.”可知,此处提到护理机器人是为了举例说明科技快速发展可能对人类的工作存在着威胁。 6.What does the report in paragraph 3 show? A.People will take the place of AI. B.US technology balances job opportunities. C.Many people have to change occupations. D.Big companies are more innovative and flexible. 解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“But the report states, ‘Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs — just changing what people do.’”可知,研究报告发现失去职业并不意味着丢掉工作,只是工作内容发生了改变。 7.What is Jonathan Grudin's attitude towards the future of human employment? A.Hopeful. B.Doubtful. C.Unconcerned. D.Worried 解析:选A 观点态度题。根据最后一段中的“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created.”可推断,Jonathan Grudin 对未来的就业形势是满怀希望的。 8.Which section of a website is the text most probably taken from? A.Art. B.Travel. C.Education. D.Technology. 解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第一段并结合全文内容可知,文章向我们描述了技术的发展使人们失去了很多就业机会,但这只是一种改革,未来会有更多的就业机会出现。因此本篇文章可能出自网站的“科技”专栏。 Ⅱ.阅读七选五 The job-searching process can be exciting and challenging.__9__ This includes increasing your understanding of how to do well in the application process, including during interviews. Here are some tips for you.
