The International Day of Peace is a day that aims to reduce violence (暴力) and to strengthen the ideals of peace around the world, and is observed on 21 September every year.
On the special day, the UN asks to stop all fighting around the world for 24 hours and asks people to observe one minute of silence at noon to honour victims of war and violence. The day begins with the Peace Bell Ceremony at the UN headquarters. The bell is made of metal that includes coins contributed by people from 65 member countries. After the bell has been rung, the UN Secretary-General delivers a speech.
Each year, the UN chooses a different theme for this day, such as “End racism: build peace” or “Climate action for peace”. This helps us to see that true peace can only be achieved when all people have the same rights, or that we must fight the climate emergency together.
People worldwide can engage in different events on this day. It could be in the field of the arts, with photography or film. Some schools also hold some activities focusing on preventing school violence. “This term, our school launches a new course teaching us to be peacemakers. Learning to be peacemakers, we can not only know negotiation (谈判) skills and take responsibility for resolving disagreements ourselves, but also help others involved in conflicts,” says Helen, a high school student.
With the Internet and social media, there is now a lot more awareness of the International Peace Day than back in 1981. Social media posts sharing information, ideas and peace messages reach millions of people all over the globe. There are many online events that people can register for on the day, like live shows, and conferences.
Apart from ending international conflicts, this day is also about changing our behaviour towards each other. For example, we can try to bring peace to our personal lives by saying sorry and making peace with someone we know. Individual actions add up to great things when they are multiplied by millions of people worldwide.
4. What marks the beginning of the yearly International Peace Day?
A. A speech from the UN Secretary-General.
B. One minute’s silence to honour war victims.
C. A donation of coins from 65 countries.
D. The ringing of the Peace Bell.
5. What may Helen think about her school’s new course this term?
A. It’s beneficial.
B. It’s creative.
C. It’s interesting.
D. It’s demanding.
6. What aspect of the International Peace Day does Paragraph 5 mainly center on?
A. Why people worldwide celebrate it.
B. What themes are conveyed on that day.
C. How people nowadays observe it online.
D. How people’s awareness of it builds up.
7. What does the author mainly intend to show in the last paragraph?
A. We should be brave to admit our own mistakes.
B. Everyone can make a difference to world peace.
C. Some conflicts between people are unavoidable.
D. We have a long way to go for world peace.
C
In a world where fire is becoming an increasingly severe threat to homes, scientists have developed a surprising new material that could help keep buildings safer. Researchers have successfully grown mycelium (菌丝体), a branching network of rootlike structures beneath every mushroom, into Pop Tart-size sheets that could act as a fire retardant (阻燃体) in building materials, according to a new study in Polymer Degradation and Stability.
While scientists have been aware of mycelium’s flame-retardant properties for several years, the study’s senior author, Everson Kandare, admits it is the first time that these properties have been applied to a practical building material and that using a biological material like mycelium has great benefits. Unlike asbestos (石棉), which is sometimes added to building materials as a fire retardant, mycelium does not produce poisonous chemicals when exposed to fire. “When there is a building fire, it is usually not the flame intensity or the heat that kills or injures people,” says Kandare. “It is the smoke and the poisonous substances that come out of building materials.”
The newly developed mycelium sheets, grown into their unique shape in a plastic container, could prevent building materials from catching fire in the first place. This is due to the fact that mycelium contains a significant amount of carbon, which is released into the air as water and carbon dioxide when the sheet is exposed to fire. After burning out, the sheet leaves behind a black layer of carbon, providing an additional layer of protection against the spread of flames.
The research team has been reaching out to mushroom farmers to see whether they could scale the technology for commercial use. Kandare is optimistic because mycelium can grow in darkness, requiring relatively minimal energy resources. Furthermore, mycelium is a biological material, and any waste it leaves behind can be broken down in the soil without causing any environmental pollution. “If the product reaches the end of its life, you can simply throw the mycelium into the garden,” Kandare says.
8. What’s the shortcoming of using traditional fire retardants like asbestos?
A. Being ineffective in stopping fire in time.
B. Exposing buildings to the risk of collapse.
C. Worsening the air quality for fire victims.
D. Adding difficulty to the building construction.
9. What makes mycelium an effective fire-preventing material?
A. Its unique structure.
B. Its resistance to heat.
C. Its sensitivity to light.
D. Its chemical composition.
10. What may Kandare think of mycelium?
A. It’s easily available and environmentally friendly.
B. It’s multi-functional and beneficial to gardening.
C. It can be put into commercial use quickly.
D. It can be applied in various other fields.
11 What can be the best title of the text?
A. An Analysis of the Effect of Fireproof Materials
B. An Introduction of a New Harmless Fire Retardant
C. A Report of the Dangers of Traditional Building Materials
D. A Study of the Environmental Benefits of Mycelium Waste

A recent study published in PNAS Nexus, for the first time, reveals that deep-sea corals (珊瑚) are capable of creating a particular type of reactive oxygen species (ROS), called superoxide. It is known for influencing ocean ecology (生态), as well as driving chemistry in the ocean including the breakdown of carbon and the bioavailability of metals and healthy substances.
Detecting superoxide in the oceans is a uniquely challenging task that takes cooperative expertise from chemistry to physics and engineering, because as a highly reactive chemical, superoxide only lasts in the water for seconds. Therefore, engineers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) developed the SOLARIS system, a robotically controlled instrument that can pull in water right at the surface of corals. The water then goes into the detection stick and mixes inside a chamber (室), where a chemical reaction with superoxide produces light that can be measured in real time.
According to the researchers, the corals they measured were producing superoxide with a chemical substance called NOX that changes oxygen to superoxide outside the cells, meaning it’s likely a basic part of their regular life functions — whether it’s growing, or possibly producing it to make hunting targets unconscious. Taenzer, an author of the research says, “It is also fascinating that corals can control ROS in order to signal to other cells and change how they function and respond to the environment. For example, if an organism is threatened, they may produce a strong burst of superoxide which acts as a kind of chemical fight to protect themselves.”
However, overproduction of superoxide can have detrimental effects on animals, and can degrade essential proteins in the body and break down DNA.
While there is still much we don’t know about how deep-sea corals function and respond to their environment, this study helps shed light on the basic controls on coral health and activity. The more scientists understand and share, the more accurately they can project how coral ecosystems will respond to warming seas and climate change.
12. What is the new discovery of the recent study?
A. Deep-sea corals can produce superoxide.
B. ROS can speed up the breakdown of carbon.
C. Superoxide has a massive impact on ocean ecology.
D. Deep-sea corals can survive in various environments.
13. What will happen once the water sample enters the chamber of the SOLARIS system?
A. Robotic devices analyze the composition of corals.
B. Water mixes with superoxide to create detectable light.
C. The detection stick sheds light to activate chemical reactions.
D. Controlling instruments extend the existence of superoxide in water.
14. What can be inferred about superoxide’s function according to the researchers?
A. Preserving a good ocean ecology.
B. Helping corals well survive the deep sea.
C. Offering signals of corals’ health conditions.
D. Providing essential nutrients for deep-sea corals.
15. What does the underlined word “detrimental” mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Noticeable. B. Permanent. C. Predictable. D. Damaging.

When I was eighteen, I did my first part-time job in a little corner shop. The owner was a sweet old man who always believed the best in people. He had given us specific instructions that whenever the homeless man, who often hung around nearby, entered the shop, we were to offer him two sandwiches and a drink, regardless of how much money he had. Additionally, if it was hot, we were to provide him with two large bottles of water. The homeless man was always quiet and seemed appreciative of our assistance.
One evening, the sky darkened as thick clouds appeared overhead, casting a frightening shadow over the landscape. There seemed to be a huge storm while my coworker called in sick, leaving me to manage the shop alone for about four hours until closing time. Just as I was about to finish my shift, the homeless man walked in with his usual gentle smile. I was relieved because I knew we had his favorite sandwiches available. I handed them to him along with his drink, and to my surprise, he handed me a $10 bill, which was much more than the small change he usually had.
I said, “Oh, it looks like you get some money today. Would you like a hot pie to go with your dinner? We still have a couple left!” But he declined, saying, “No, please keep the rest of the money for the owner to make up for the days when I didn’t have any money and he still fed me.” I agreed and wished him a pleasant meal. Seeing outside I noticed that it began to rain with fierce wind; the storm was on its way as expected. So I decided to close the store as quickly as possible. When retracting (收回) the advertising sign from the shop front, I was struck by our store sign, unconscious (不省人事的).
The next thing I remember is waking up in a hospital bed with a doctor standing beside me, asking, “Hey there, you’re awake! Do you know what happened? Can you tell me what day it is?” I struggled to find my voice and muster (聚集) the strength to answer his questions.
Paragraph 1:
I told him that all I could recall was the strong wind and being hit.

Paragraph 2:
Our homeless friend’s selfless act of bravery did not go unnoticed.

11. What can be the best title of the text?

D. Damaging.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. B 15. D

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Our homeless friend’s selfless act of bravery did not go unnoticed.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文:
Paragraph 1:
I told him that all I could recall was the strong wind and being hit. The doctor nodded and told me a homeless man had found me lying on the ground outside the shop and called an ambulance at once. He stayed with me until the ambulance arrived, even getting wet all over in the heavy rain. He also told the doctors the basic information about the shop so that they could contact the owner. I was shocked and moved when hearing this, tears filling my eyes. I never thought the homeless man I had helped a little would save my life in return.
Paragraph 2:
Our homeless friend’s selfless act of bravery did not go unnoticed. The shop owner was deeply touched after knowing what had happened. He not only thanked the man warmly but also offered him a part-time job in the shop to help him make a living. The story also spread in the neighborhood, and many people began to care about the homeless man and offer him help. Since then, the man has lived a stable life, and we have become good friends. This experience taught me that a small act of kindness can warm the world and bring unexpected rewards.
