Passage 1
(24-25高一下·云南昆明第一中学·期中)
The Mountain Bongo (a type of antelope) has been driven to near extinction, according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Ecologist Mordecai Ogada says, “It can only be found in the wild in Kenya, highly endangered, and that is why protecting this species is important.”
The populations of the animals have been greatly reduced. The animals have been hunted for their meat and their prized coat, skulls, and horns. Human-wildlife activities, especially the sharing of grounds with livestock (家畜), also led to the spread of diseases.
Some were traded to zoos in the United States and efforts to save the animals have depended on returning them to Kenya. At one time, there were only 18 of these creatures left in captivity (圈养) there. They were sent back to Kenya in 2004 to breed (繁殖) them and re-establish the Mountain Bongo in their natural area. But it has been a slow process.
“So, the bongos that are coming back from zoos need a very long time to be able to get used to the wild environment again and it takes several generations,” explains Philippe Cauviere, chief executive officer at Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy. “And that is why it has taken such a long time to get where we are today. We’ve had more than 70 births.”
To support the recovery of the species in the wild, the government agency, Kenya Wildlife Service, together with Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, set up the Mawingu Bongo Sanctuary as part of the National Mountain Bongo Recovery and Action Plan 2019-2023. The sanctuary is on the slopes (坡地) of Mount Kenya. There are plans to set free 25 Mountain Bongos in this protected area. This will help the rewilding of the animals as well as reintroducing them into their original habitats.
“Finally what needs to be done to save the Mountain Bongo is their habitat has to be protected-these are the highland forests. I think the goal here is not captivity but to increase wild populations and rewild them and reintroduce them into this country,” Ogada says.

Passage 2
(24-25高一下·云南·期中)
When Hurricane Douglas was moving rapidly toward Oahu in 2020, David Sischo quickly packed up and drove to higher ground. But he wasn’t shifting his family. He was shifting snails (蜗牛).
Sischo works with some of the rarest endangered species on the planet, kahuli — Hawaii’s native tree snails. The brightly colored snails used to be extremely common. It’s said they were like Christmas decorations covering the trees. Almost all of the 750 different species were found only in Hawaii. Today, more than half of those species are gone, the extinctions happening in the span of a human lifetime. Sischo and his team with Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources have the heavy task of saving what’s left.
To stave off extinction, 40 species of snails, each as small as a coin, are kept and cared for by humans in a simple trailer near Honolulu. For some, it’s the only place where they’re found, their wild populations having completely disappeared. “Most people, when they think endangered species going extinct, they think of pandas and tigers and elephants, but imagine having 40 different species that are all as rare as pandas are,” Sischo says.
This winter, one species of snail will move closer to a promising milestone. These snails will be set free into a painstakingly prepared protected area in the mountains of Oahu. This special place has been thoroughly prepared so that the snails can survive well in their natural home.
Globally, plants and animals are being moved to protected areas as a final attempt to stop them from dying out. But as the climate warms and harmful non-native species keep spreading, many native ones cannot find a way to go back to the wild soon. That could mean they stay in human care. In the face of the biodiversity crisis, many wildlife biologists say there’s no other choice. “These are biological treasures that are irreplaceable,” Sischo says. “It is now or never. What we manage to keep on Earth will be what the next generation is able to put back.”
1.What’s the present state of kahuli?
A.They are at risk of extinction.
B.They are now more plentiful than ever.
C.None of the 750 species are declining in Hawaii.
D.They can be found in various parts of the world.
2.What does the phrase “stave off” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Cause. B.Prevent. C.Face. D.Promote.
3.What does Sischo imply by comparing the snails to pandas and tigers?
A.Smaller species are less likely to become extinct.
B.They are more popular than large endangered animals.
C.They require equally immediate protection efforts as pandas.
D.Small species are easier to care for in controlled environments.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The importance of protecting endangered species.
B.The impact of climate change on biodiversity in Hawaii.
C.The process of reintroducing endangered species into the wild.
D.The challenges and efforts to save the endangered Hawaiian snails.
Passage 3
(24-25高一下·云南红河哈尼族彝族蒙自蒙自第一高级中学教育集团联考·期中)
Natural disasters such as hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes have been happening since before recorded history, which means that they have been shaping history for centuries. Discovering remains centuries later has given us a better understanding of the past.
Most people think of Pompeii when it comes to ancient disasters. The whole city laid buried for 17 centuries before being discovered. There are records directly from Pliny the Younger, a Roman government official at the time, who states that his uncle Pliny the Elder, while watching Vesuvius erupt from Naples, decided to take the boat to Pompeii to see it closer. It is also shown that many people stayed to protect their money and possessions (财产) , which proves (证明) clearly that they were not expecting to be killed by this eruption.
The fact that Pompeii was untouched after the eruption gives researchers and archaeologists a unique chance to study it. This means everything found there is exactly as it was just before the disasters. In fact, a documentary was able to be made titled Pompeii: The Last Day based on information found there, which helps us understand its culture and lifestyles.
Pompeii isn’t the only city left buried for centuries. When Steven Soter was doing research on predicting (预测) earthquakes, he became interested in researching Helike, a city that had been ruined by an earthquake and nearly buried underwater by the following tsunami. Remains have been found and further research has been made about earthquakes there. Due to the number of quakes that have continually happened round Helike, any remains have been hard to come by, but that doesn’t stop the researchers’ work. There were a few things mentioned that could prove as some sort of warning signs for future earthquakes. It could be proved that a strong wind ended suddenly and dozens of dead mice all headed in one direction. The research that was being done there are useful for future earthquakes and possible tsunamis.
We are continuously finding out more by researching the areas. The information that we receive from these ruins is immeasurable.
1.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A.The eruption of Vesuvius caused tsunami.
B.The authority back then took immediate measures.
C.The people at that time knew little about volcanoes.
D.The people of Pompeii had a deep feeling for the city.
2.What is the importance of Pompeii being untouched after the eruption?
A.It helps understand natural disasters better. B.It proves the existence of Pompeii in history.
C.It means the possibility of Pompeii’s revival. D.It allows for a detailed study of the ancient city.
3.What made Steven Soter research Helike?
A.His interest in ancient ruins. B.A chance discovery of dead mice.
C.His work on predicting earthquakes. D.A strong wind that stopped suddenly.
4.What challenge did researchers face when studying Helike?
A.Extreme weather conditions. B.Difficulty in finding remains.
C.Limited funding for the research. D.Inability to study underwater ruins.
Passage 4
(24-25高一下·云南马关县第一中学校·期中)
Ants have the ability to smell cancerous cells in humans, a new study has discovered, suggesting they could be used for cancer diagnosis in future. Researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) discovered that ant species Formica fusca has a well developed sense of smell. It was able to differentiate (区分) cancerous cells from healthy cells in humans, thanks to their sense of smell, limited trials revealed.
To conduct their research, the scientists performed tests with 36 ants, smelling cells under a laboratory setting. First, the specialists exposed the ants to the smell of a sample of cancerous human cells. This smell was then associated with a reward of sugar solution. In a second step, the researchers exposed the ants to two different smells. One was a new smell and the second was the smell of the cancerous cells. Once this test was successful, the researchers exposed the ants to different cancerous cells.
As such, the scientists found that ants discriminate between cancerous and healthy cells and between two cancerous lines. After training, Formica fusca ants are able to detect volatile organic compounds given off by cancerous cells. This first study shows that ants have high potential, are capable of learning very quickly, at lower cost, and are efficient, CNRS points out in a news release.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animal sense of smell to locate cancerous cells. “Dogs’ noses are well suited for medical diagnosis. However, training them to do so requires several months to a year. Ants therefore represent a fast, efficient, inexpensive, and highly discriminant detection tool for detection of cancer cell volatiles,” the team explained, “our approach could potentially be adapted to a range of other complex smell detection tasks including the detection of narcotics, explosives, spoiled food, or other diseases.”
But more clinical tests must be carried out before they could be used in clinical settings like hospitals, the team said. They suggest that in future, ants could turn out to be better than dogs when it comes to locating cancerous cells in humans. Who knows? Let’s wait and see.
1.How does the author introduce the topic of ants’potential use in cancer diagnosis?
A.By comparing ants to dogs.
B.By presenting the results of a new study.
C.By describing the training process of ants.
D.By discussing the history of cancer diagnosis.
2.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The process of the research. B.The reason of the research.
C.The limitation of the research. D.The conclusion of the research.
3.What can we infer about the use of ants in cancer diagnosis?
A.Ants have already been used in clinical settings.
B.Ants’ noses are more sensitive than dogs’ noses.
C.Ants may become a cost-effective diagnostic tool.
D.Ants will replace dogs in cancer detection entirely.
4.What is the author’s attitude towards the use of ants in cancer diagnosis?
A.Doubtful B.Negative C.Objective D.Indifferent.

Studies have shown that writing by hand can have enormous (极大的) beneficial impacts in terms of memory, brain development, and even the quality of writing itself.
Some might say that handwriting has become a dying art since the advent of the typewriter in the mid 1880s, even more so due to computers. In fact, nowadays, some schools in the United States no longer require teaching handwriting as a part of the main courses. However, despite the sense that writing on paper is out of fashion, it actually has a number of very important strengths.
Writing by hand is not only important for language processing and memory, but it is also important for mental development. In learning to write by hand, the human brain must combine feeling, movement control, and thinking. For whatever reason, it does not do so when learning to type.
Writing by hand is good for mental health, and there are some studies that can prove it. Writing on paper can help students recall material better than typing on a keyboard. Similarly, a study from 2014 shows that compared to writing by hand, taking notes on a laptop results in a less deep absorption of the learned material. This is because when using a laptop, students will often type out lectures word for word instead of processing information and rewording it in their own language.
These advantages actually translate to how you recall the information. In this case, writing by hand instead of typing also helps students do better on exams. Children write longer and more complex essays when they are writing by hand, compared with using a keyboard. Children usually do better writing with a pen when they write essays. They write more and faster.
The next time you want to sit down to write an email to a loved one, why not try writing a handwritten letter instead? It can be more beneficial to your brain. Plus, the personal touch of a handwritten letter can make your message even more special and memorable.
1.What does the underlined word “advent” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Rent. B.Request. C.Alarm. D.Appearance.
2.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about handwriting?
A.Its advantages. B.Its types. C.Its development. D.Its requirements.
3.What happens when students use a laptop instead of a pen to take notes?
A.They recall more words.
B.They do better in writing essays.
C.They are less confident about their exams.
D.They have a lower understanding of the material.
4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A.To make a suggestion. B.To express thanks.
C.To honour loved ones. D.To share a personal experience.

As the Spring Festival approaches, discussions on “festive atmosphere fading away (逐渐消失)” have once again risen to the surface; yet a closer look reveals that young people are not throwing away traditions, but celebrating the festival in new and innovative ways.
On the lifestyle platform Xiaohongshu, users share couplets (对联) they have written. Instead of poetic wishes, the paired phrases could be numbers, emojis and plain slogans—with “Having money and knowledge; Losing weight and troubles” an often-seen refrain. These funny couplets have encouraged many people to continue the Spring Festival tradition of hanging couplets and sticking gate-god pictures. Calligraphy, woodcut pictures and traditional paintings also gain in popularity among people born from 1995 to 2010.
Another rebounding (复苏的) tradition is wearing hanfu, a traditional garment of the Han people, often worn during festivals. For people born after 1990s, one of the childhood Spring Festival customs was buying new clothes. Some still embrace this tradition as a way to ring in the newyear. Dang Hui from Luoyang, took her family for a hanfu family photoshoot. Instead of sitting indoors, they went to ancient-style parks and temple fairs.
Some young people also get to know better and become interested in Spring Festival “traditions”, such as visiting temple fairs, flower markets and watching lion dancing. Meng Fanis spending the holidays with her family in Guangzhou and they plan to watch lion dancing, which combines martial arts, folk music and dance. The movements, mimicking lions climbing mountains, jumping across rivers and playing with each other, carry auspicious meanings such as overcoming difficulties and making achievements.
Through these new ways to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, older generations pass on traditions while young people gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of the Spring Festival.

C.The importance of passing on traditions. D.The renewal of Spring Festival traditions.
Passage 3
(24-25高一下·云南昭通镇雄县三校联考·期中)
An old wooden stove (厨灶), bearing rich vivid images, took center stage in Haiyan County, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, in early February. The images feature historical figures, fairy tales, animals and flowers, all of which are pictured in bright colors. “They all represent people’s respect to heroes and wishes for good fortune,” says Zhao Shengbo, who created the zaotou (a kitchen stove) artwork.
The special art form in Jiaxing was listed as a national cultural heritage in 2011. It was once common for farmhouses, especially those along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, to have a zaotou with auspicious figures or patterns. Locals burned firewood in it to cook, before gas burners or microwave ovens were available. Historical evidence shows the art has a history of at least 300 years.
Most of those engaged in zaotou painting were bricklayers in rural areas where they were often hired by villagers to build a stove in their new home on a good day and paint pictures on the stove. Tools used to produce such art included brushes, rulers, and paint.
Folk craftsmen later also came to express life’s passions through zaotou paintings. They first whitewashed the mud-made stove with limewater (石灰水), and drew the patterns based on the shape of the stove, before applying the final coat of paint. Later, watercolors were applied, mostly red, yellow and blue. “But no matter what material is used, the stove painting is always symbolic and contains good wishes for the owners,” Zhao says.
Although some villages have recently improved the traditional zaotou into an electricity-powered stove for environmental protection, as local authorities have given more support to preserve cultural heritage, zaotou painting has grown with new power. “Now that zaotou paintings have been receiving more support from various sides, I’ll make my effort to create more works and reach out to those who show interest,” Zhao says.
1.What do the images on the zaotou mainly symbolize?
A.The beauty of nature. B.The local history and culture.
C.The development of folk art. D.People’s respect for heroes and good wishes.
2.Which can replace the underlined word “auspicious” in Paragraph 2?
A.Simple. B.Lucky. C.Strange. D.Complex.
3.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The steps of creating zaotou paintings. B.The tools used in zaotou painting.
C.The materials used in zaotou painting. D.The development of zaotou painting.
4.What could be a suitable title for the text?
A.How Gas Burners Replaced Zaotou in Jiaxing
B.The Mysterious Function of Old Wooden Stoves
C.Zaotou Artwork: From Traditional Stoves to Cultural Heritage

Passage 1
(24-25高一下·云南玉溪红塔区玉溪师范学院附属中学·期中)
Agriculture has experienced great changes in the recent past. The agricultural production ability in China has shifted to a new level with the introduction of digital technologies.
Breeding (培育) new and improved plant species is important to the agricultural industry. Phenotyping, the process of measuring and analyzing (分析) observable plant characteristics, helps to pick out the best types of plants that could adapt to different environments. However, phenotyping is time-consuming in traditional crop breeding, as it takes more than half of the day to conduct just one round of plant height measurement in the field. Luckily, digital technologies have now expedited this process. It takes only 30 minutes to smartly get data mentioned above with 3D phenotyping measurement technologies like LiDAR.
In a strawberry greenhouse base in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, a single worker can now carry out fertilization (施肥) and drop watering in over 100 mu of strawberries. Yao Hongyan, a worker at the greenhouse, said that there’s a smart data collection station based on Agricultural Internet of Things, which could ensure fertilizer and water are put precisely to each single strawberry plant. Moreover, a station is also fixed in the greenhouse to monitor light, humidity and temperature in real time, creating a better environment for strawberries to grow.
How to better store and sell agricultural products is a key issue to farmers once the harvest is done. In Guizhou Province, there are warehouse companies that have introduced smart storage of agricultural products, through a digitalized management system and a quality control system. And Gzda. com, Guizhou’s big data platform for agricultural products, covers over 3,700 vegetable production bases within the province, realizing the capture and smart analysis of sales and price data produced when the vegetables are sold.
Overall, relying only on labor is no longer how agriculture works, and the advances in technology are leading to a more productive modern agriculture system in China.
1.What does the underlined word “expedited” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Dealt with. B.Took place of. C.Gave way to. D.Speeded up.
2.What can we know about the smart data collection station?
A.It collects data from a national system. B.It controls temperature in the greenhouse.
C.It ensures precise fertilization and watering. D.It monitors strawberries’ growing environment.

Passage 2
(24-25高一下·云南部分学校·期中)
The average adults in the UK spend nearly two hours daily on social media, while younger users may spend up to five hours. Internet platforms (平台) attract users by using always-changing content. Recent research reveals their bodies physically react when using these platforms.
Some researchers observed 54 young adults surfing the Internet normally for 15 minutes on their phones. Special equipment measured their heart activity and sweating response, which help the researchers understand their emotional states. The participants first read a news article on their phones before changing to social media. Compared to reading news, the use of social media caused slower heart rates combined with greater sweating response. Previous studies show this pattern occurs when people become deeply focused on emotionally meaningful content — a mix of excitement and total mental involvement (参与).
Importantly, this reaction wasn’t caused by phone use itself, but specifically by social media interaction. The most surprising result came when the researchers asked users to stop using social media and return to news reading. Instead of calming down, the participants showed increased physical reactions — faster heart rates and greater sweating response.
Why did this happen? Emotional surveys provided clues. The participants reported feeling stressed and anxious when stopping social media use, even expressing a strong wish to return to it. These reactions are similar to the discomfort people experience when suddenly stopping addictive things. Our study, however, doesn’t confirm true addiction. All participants showed similar physical reactions regardless of their self-reported social media habits. This suggests social media’s attraction lies in its ability to provide powerful rewards (奖励) through features like personalized video streams that keep users endlessly involved.
Too much use of social media can be harmful to youths’ well-being. Earlier research shows people primarily use social media to satisfy basic human needs for connection and acceptance. These needs can be met through real-world interactions. Most of us can reduce social media use without major life changes because we can satisfy social needs through other methods like face-to-face conversations.
1.What did the researchers use special equipment to do?
A.Change the content of social media.
B.Understand the function of social media.
C.Measure the participants’ physical signs.
D.Control the participants’ emotional states.
2.What happened when the participants were asked to stop using social media?
A.They kept extremely calm. B.Their sweating response increased.
C.Their heart rates stayed the same D.They wished to continue reading news.
3.What can we learn about social media from paragraph 4?
A.It has no impact on users’ emotions.
B.It attracts users’ involvement through rewards.
C.It causes true addiction in all participants.
D.It leads to all participants’ different physical responses.
4.What is the author’s attitude to young people’s using social media?
A.Unconcerned. B.Positive. C.Opposed. D.Curious.

During the summer holiday, visiting museums has become a new fashion, with several famous museums being considered as “must-visit” places by visitors. Tourists were seen queuing for long hours in front of museums and getting entrance tickets became more challenging.
According to media reports, the Henan Museum received more than 12,000 visitors this summer, nearly double that of the same period in 2019. The Hangzhou Museum recorded 12,800 visitors on July 16, setting a new daily attendance record. In response to the growing need, 46 museums in Beijing canceled their Monday closures and remained open daily until August 31.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the “museum fever” can be caused by various factors, including the public’s increasing enthusiasm for traditional Chinese culture, the increasing market for youth educational tours and summer camps, as well as the continuous development of museums.
Lin Liugen, the director of the Institute of Archaeology at Zhejiang University, said the “museum craze” reflects a deep connection between the public and traditional culture. As the economy and society progress, more people want to have a deeper understanding of China’s rich culture and history.

Passage 6
(22-23高一下·云南曲靖兴教学校·期中)
Sun Yi finally received an email she had long been waiting for, which contained her final wedding plan. The plan, which had been revised nearly ten times, offered the 29-year-old girl a “new Chinese-style” wedding in March. She described it as “traditional but old-fashioned” and “ritualistic (仪式的) but stylish.”
In recent years, traditional Chinese weddings have won popularity again among the country's newly-married. Many of them no longer consider western-style dresses and words of “I do” as important parts of weddings. Instead, they now prefer wearing Tang Dynasty-style clothes and performing traditional rituals at weddings the same way their ancestors did hundreds, even thousands of years ago.
In traditional Chinese weddings, couples usually wear red. Red is always a symbol of fortune in Chinese culture, and the hall of the ceremony is also richly decorated in red. Couples will perform a three-step ritual, namely to heaven and earth, to their parents and to each other.
In Lanzhou, several wedding planning companies are sparing no effort to promote their “Chinese-style wedding packages”, which offer a wide range of choices for wedding plans. Chinese-style weddings make up nearly 40 percent of our orders. Customers often need to make reservations six months in advance, said Zhang, a wedding planner.
Wang Yiru, another wedding planner in Lanzhou, Xinxin Wedding Service Company, said the preparation for a Chinese-style wedding is usually very time-consuming and costly.
“Wedding ceremonies reflect social and cultural changes. With people’s living standards improved, they go for more individual choices,” said Wang Zongli, a professor at Northwest Normal University.

The Japanese Tea Ceremony, known as “Chanoyu” or “Sado” in Japanese, is a traditional cultural practice that deeply originates from Japanese history. Its origins can be traced back to the 9th century when tea was first introduced to Japan from China. At that time, tea was mainly used for medicinal purposes and was only accessible to the high-ranking individuals and religious figures.
In the 15th century, the tea ceremony began to take on its unique form and philosophy. Sen no Rikyu, a famous tea master, played an important role in shaping the modern tea ceremony. He stressed the rules of “wa: harmony, kei: respect, sei: purity, jaku: tranquility” in the tea ceremony. These principles guide every aspect of the ceremony, from the way the tea room is decorated to the gestures and words of the participants.
A typical Japanese tea ceremony takes place in a specially designed tea room, or “chashitsu.” The room is usually simple and elegant, with a tokonoma (alcove) displaying a seasonal flower arrangement or a scroll painting. The host carefully prepares the matcha (powdered green tea) using a bamboo whisk, a bowl, and hot water. Guests are served the tea in a specific order, and they follow a set of manners when receiving and drinking the tea.
The tea ceremony is not just about drinking tea; it is a form of art that combines elements of aesthetics (美学) , the way to treat guests, and spirituality. It provides a moment of peace and reflection in the middle of a busy life. Through the ceremony, participants can experience a sense of connection with nature, history, and each other.
Even in modern Japan, the tea ceremony remains a significant part of cultural heritage. Cultural festivals are an important part of our global society, showcasing the rich traditions, customs, and values that define various communities. They serve as a bridge between the past and the present, allowing us to maintain a connection and preservation of these events can be challenging, particularly in the face of globalisation and modernisation. This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes into play.
AI is being used to streamline the planning and execution (执行) of cultural festivals. For instance, predictive analytics, a branch of AI, can analyze past data to predict visitor turnout, enabling organisers to plan more effectively. AI can also help in creating personalised experiences for attendees. By analysing data from social media and other sources, AI can provide insights into what attendees might enjoy, allowing for the customisation of events for different interests.
Furthermore, AI is proving instrumental in preserving cultural festivals for future generations. High-definition cameras equipped with AI technology are being used to record festivals in exceptional detail.

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D

【答案】1.C 2.D 3.C 4.B

Passage 1
(24-25高一下·云南部分学校·期中)
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.D 4.A

B.Positive. C.Opposed. D.Curious.

The host carefully prepares the matcha (powdered green tea) using a bamboo whisk, a bowl, and hot water. Guests are served the tea in a specific order, and they follow a set of manners when receiving and drinking the tea.
