第Ⅱ卷 语篇综合训练
(一)阅读理解
When Sahana Vij was just five years old, her mother taught her how to make French toast, and together they volunteered in Seattle, preparing soups and enchiladas (肉馅玉米卷饼) and serving meals to families in need. From then on, Vij has developed a passion for cooking.
Reflecting on her experiences, Vij, now an 18-year-old freshman at a university, shared with the media, “Food is a major, big, important way to communicate with people.” That is exactly what motivated her to teach herself by experimenting with new recipes each week and preparing them for others, and still in high school, she authored her cookbook, Bake Away, which is available at several stores.
Vij is donating all of her author proceeds (收入) to the non-profit No Kid Hungry. For every D|S1 donated, No Kid Hungry serves 10 meals.“You need to eat,” she says.“You need to eat breakfast, you need to eat lunch, and you need to fuel your body, especially while you're learning.” If her first printing run sells out, Vij hopes to provide kids with about 700,000 meals.“As many as possible,” she says.“It feels like a necessity to me.”
On Father's Day, Vij presented a copy of her book to Thomas Keller, a chef at The French Laundry, who commented on her website by saying, “Whenever I encounter creative blocks or picky diners, I always think of the book, which even perfectly bridges culinary (烹饪的) innovation and charity, giving me hope for the future.”
Vij hopes to make a global impact through her cooking, with plans to earn an MBA after college and open her own restaurant, where she intends to donate part of the proceeds to No Kid Hungry.Vij says, “I hope that I can inspire others to keep creating and continue to cook and share what I've made with other people.”

How to become a scientist
Be curious.Scientists choose to become scientists because they are curious about the world around them and how the things in it work. This curiosity leads them to investigate the how and why behind what they see.
5 Becoming a scientist takes a long time. There are very few careers that take longer than this one.Even when you're doing with your education, you still have to get research under your belt.If you're an instant-gratification (即时满足) type of person, this may not be the right career for you.
Be diligent and persevere. It's been said that jobs in science are the lowest paid in the US.What this is getting at is that because of the long path to success, for a while you won't be living lavishly (奢华地). 6
Have the need to always keep learning. 7 Whether it's reading peer-reviewed journals, attending seminars, or working toward getting yourself published, you'll always be learning.
8 In those years of waiting for results, you need to constantly be looking for the smallest changes in what you expect to see.Your eye needs to be focused and ready at all times.
Think differently.Think back to Newton's apple falling on his head or Archimedes jumping into his tub and displacing water. Most people would think nothing of these events, but these men saw something else, something no one else was seeing at the time. 9
A.Observation skills are also necessary.
B.Be patient in climbing the career ladder.
C.Things are going to be tough for a while.
D.Then you're probably made of the right stuff.
E.As the saying goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way.”
F.Actually what every scientist does is to seek out knowledge.
G.To make progress in human knowledge, you have to think differently.
