After giving zero-sugar and zero-fat foods a try, teenagers
these days are becoming interested in “zero-sugar” socializing (零糖社交).
But what does it really mean? Just as “zero-sugar” foods stand for a
light and healthy eating style, “zero-sugar” socializing means having
easier relationships. People are looking for more meaningful ways to
communicate with others than before. By doing fewer unnecessary social
activities, they can manage their time better and know more about
themselves.#1
5
A recent social trend (趋势) report shows that people who enjoy
“zero-sugar” socializing usually take part in activities like going for walks
in the city, visiting supermarkets nearby or new coffee shops with a few
friends. The trend is similar to some ideas of people who live a simple
life. It shows teenagers' wishes to slow down and pay attention to what
truly matters.
Although this way fits some people, it may not be the best choice
for everyone. It's very important not to follow trends blindly.
Whether you like “zero-sugar” or “full-sugar” socializing, the key to
feeling happy in your relationships with others is understanding your own
needs.
“Zero-sugar” socializing does not mean “no socializing at all”.
Instead, it follows a Chinese old saying: The friendship between
gentlemen is as pure (纯粹的) as water. It's about finding a balance
(平衡) between personal space and meaningful connections.#1.3

Last month, the local community invited kids to sing for the elderly
at the nursing home. Grandma asked if I could come and sing the song
that she taught me when I was a little girl. I didn't want to let her
down, but singing in public really troubled me a lot.
“I can't do it. I'm too shy.” I told my worry to my friends Molly
and Emily.
“You're not alone,” said Molly. “I feel nervous about singing in
public too.”
10
“Don't worry! I have an idea!” said Emily. “I mean, I always feel
braver with friends. How about the three of us sing together?”
After talking about it for a while, we agreed happily. Over the next
few days, we practiced the song so many times that we could not get it
out of our heads.
Finally, the big day came. I wasn't the only one who was nervous.
Molly's legs were shaking. Emily's hands were wet, but she still
encouraged us, “We can become braver and stronger when we are
together.”
Emily was right. As soon as we started singing, our nervousness
went away. The pretty and relaxing song just seemed to sing itself. The
hall was filled with cheers. Some of the elderly even joined us. With
more people singing together, we sang more confidently. When we
finished singing, Grandma came onto the stage (舞台) and gave us all a
warm group hug.#7
