Have you ever eaten rice made from potatoes? In Qiaojia County,
Yunnan, a factory is turning fresh potatoes into something amazing—
“potato rice”! It looks like real rice, but it's actually made from potatoes
using smart food technology. The idea is to turn healthy potatoes into an
easy-to-cook grain (谷物).
Why do people make it? Potatoes are hard to keep fresh and not
always easy to use as a daily food. But now, potato rice can be stored
longer and cooked faster. Even better, it keeps most of the good things
9
from potatoes like fiber and vitamins. And it has 27% more protein
(蛋白质) than common rice. So it's great for people who want to eat
more healthily, like older people or those with health problems.
The factory started working in November 2024 and sells the rice
across China. A lot of people are interested in trying it. One bag of
potato rice (500g) costs 16.5 yuan, about five times more than common
rice of the same weight. That's because the raw material (原材料) itself
is not cheap—each ton of potato rice uses 2.5 tons of fresh potatoes.
Now, the developers are working to make the taste even better and
maybe try other crops like sweet potatoes next. Experts say this is a
great way to improve eating habits, reduce food waste, and support food
safety. Who knew that potatoes we see every day could become a
modern star on the dinner table?#1.3

Math isn't just numbers in textbooks. It's all around us,
making our world more beautiful and convenient.#1
Math in Poems
In Chinese poems, the numbers give us the freedom to imagine. As
Li Bai wrote, “I've sailed a thousand miles through Gorges in a day”,
“My boat has left ten thousand mountains far away”, “The waterfall
rushes down three thousand feet from high”—these numbers show what
Li Bai saw and how he felt. When we read the lines, there are pictures
in mind.#2.1

Math in Paintings
Art and math might seem different, but together they create
wonderful works! Some studies show that when Leonardo da Vinci
painted the Mona Lisa, he followed a special math rule called the
“golden ratio(黄金比例)”. The ratio was hidden in different parts of the
painting, like the size of the canvas (画布), the face of the lady and the
background behind her. This makes the painting beautiful and
impressive(给人深刻印象的).#3.1

Math in Traffic
How do traffic lights “know” when to change? Traffic engineers use
traffic flow models, a kind of math model, to help cars move smoothly.
They collect plenty of data (数据) like how many cars pass by, when
people cross the street, busy times of a day and special events in the
city. With these models, engineers can do lots of math and run many
tests to study how the traffic moves better. This allows them to find the
best timing for each traffic light. It makes our city green, smart and
livable!
Math makes our lives better and helps us understand the world in
many surprising ways!#4.2
