Buddy works with two small cameras that see the road and a computer chip that learns the way to your classroom. If the ground is uneven, the six wheels change size to keep the bag level. When it rains, a cover opens automatically.
The inventors, Kim Min and Lee Joo, spent one year building five models. “We failed many times,” said Min. “The first model fell over when it climbed a 3-cm step.” They almost gave up, but their science teacher told them, “Every problem is a hidden lesson.” Now Buddy can climb steps up to 12 cm high and work for six hours on one battery.
Some people worry that students will become lazy. “We don’t want Buddy to replace hands,” Joo explained. “We want it to help students with heavy books or disabilities.” The girls hope to sell Buddy for under $200 next year.

Last Friday, our class visited the Maple Hill Nursing Home. My job was to play the violin for the grandparents there. I felt nervous because I had only played for my family before.
When I started, my hands shook and the first note was out of tune. An old lady named Mrs. Green smiled and waved at me. Suddenly, I felt warm inside. I took a deep breath and played “You Are My Sunshine”. Slowly, more grandparents came in. They clapped after every song.
After the show, Mrs. Green showed me a photo of her grandson, who looked about my age. “He lives far away,” she said. “Your music reminds me of him,” I promised to visit again next month. On the bus back to school, I realized that music is not only about perfect notes; it is also about hearts.

Imagine a small robot following you to school. It carries your books, remembers your schedule and even reminds you to drink water. This is “Buddy”, a backpack robot invented by two high-school girls in Seoul.
