Each day, a 454-kilogram horse produces about 23 kilograms of poop and urine. Over the years, people have found some creative ways to make sure waste doesn’t go to waste!
Keeping the Grass Green
Horse poop and urine always have some plant bits mixed in. Keep the mixture for at least 6 months, and it will turn into an excellent fertilizer which is used to help grass, fields and even dead trees turn green.
Building Strong Walls
People in dry places have been building houses with adobe (黏土) for thousands of years. They often add other things to make it better. In the southwestern US, people put horse poop into adobe to build walls.
Dyeing Hair
In 16th-century Italy, women used hair dyes to color their hair. Hair dyes in the 1500s were made from natural things, such as rhubarb, saffron and… horse urine. After putting the dye on their hair, women went outside and dried their hair in the sun to bring out the color.
Speeding up Copper’s Greening
Many people like aged copper (铜) because of its color. However, it takes several years for copper to turn green. Luckily, there is a way to make it faster. In the past, people sometimes spread horse urine on it. This made the color come out sooner!
4. How many ways of reusing horse poop and urine are mentioned?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
5. What does the first “waste” mean in the underlined sentence “waste doesn’t go to waste”?
① v. not use well
Don’t waste money on clothes you don’t need.
② n. the act of using sth. in a careless way
It is a waste to throw good food away.
③ n. things that are no longer needed and are thrown away
The old factory produces a lot of waste every day.
④ adj. useless
Don’t pour waste water into the river.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
6. Which sentence is true according to this text?

B. 16th-century American women colored their hair with horse urine.
C. People in dry areas once used horse poop instead of adobe to build houses.

For Swedes, Saint Lucia’s Day on December 13th marks the start of the Christmas season. And for girls who are chosen to be a Lucia, it is one of the most exciting days of their lives.
Saint Lucia’s Day is also known as the Festival of Light. It’s said Lucia was born in a wealthy family. Once she wore a crown (皇冠) of candles to take food to hungry people who hid in the dark underground. What’s more, “Lucia” means “light” in Swedish. The Swedes experience very dark winters. That’s why the idea of someone bringing light to a dark place was very important.
The festivities begin on the evening of December 12th for a belief that miracles happen at midnight. Anyone who is awake at midnight may hear cats talking or see running water turn into milk.
The following morning, the youngest daughter acts as the family’s Lucia. Dressing in a long, white robe and wearing a wreath of lighted candles on her head, she wakes family members by singing. Then she serves them breakfast in bed, giving them the traditional Lucia Day meal, including hot coffee and round-shaped bread called Lucia cats.
In the past few years, two star boys have been added to the festivities. They are the sons of the family. Both of them wear long white robes as well, but they wear pointed hats decorated with stars on their heads instead of wreaths of candles.
That same day, parades are held throughout Sweden. Officers and schools select their own Lucias. For safety reasons, sometimes battery-powered candles are used instead of the traditional candles. Lucias visit hospitals and homes for the elderly.
On the evening of Saint Lucia’s Day, many schools, offices, and community groups hold candlelight Lucia parades. Carols are sung, and everyone thanks Lucia, the Queen of Light, for bringing light during the darkest time of year.
8. When is Saint Lucia’s Day?
A. On December 12th. B. On December 13th.
C. On December 20th. D. On December 25th.
9. What activities can people enjoy on the Saint Lucia’s Day?
a. Singing carols. b. Tasting Lucia cats.
c. Watching parades. d. Seeing magic shows.
A. abc B. acd C. abd D. bcd
10. What can we know about Saint Lucia’s Day?
A. Star boys dress the same robe and wreath like Lucia.
B. The festival activities usually start in the early morning.
C. The oldest daughter is often chosen to be family’s Lucia.
D. Sometimes safer candles are used instead of the traditional ones.
11. Why do Swedes celebrate Saint Lucia’s Day?
A. Because Lucia serves family members.
B Because Lucia helps the wounded people.
C. Because Lucia makes poor families become rich.
D. Because Lucia brings light during the darkest time.
B 9. A 10. D 11. D

第一段指出时间:“For Swedes, Saint Lucia’s Day on December 13th marks the start of the Christmas season”,说明圣露西亚节在12月13日。
第四段、第六段及最后一段提到:“Then she serves them breakfast in bed, giving them the traditional Lucia Day meal, including hot coffee and round-shaped bread called Lucia cats”,可知人们能品尝Lucia猫形状的面包;“That same day, parades are held throughout Sweden”,可知能看到游行;“On the evening of Saint Lucia’s Day, many schools, offices, and community groups hold candlelight Lucia parades. Carols are sung”,可知能唱颂歌。所以人们能享受的活动是abc。
【10题详解】
第六段说明关于节日的信息:“For safety reasons, sometimes battery-powered candles are used instead of the traditional candles”,说明有时为了安全,会使用电池供电的蜡烛代替传统蜡烛。

Eli was excited. Today, he was going to finish his first real coding (编程) task—writing a program to let his computer speak like a real person!
Eli put a sticker on the screen with the computer’s name in big letters: CHIP. He started typing and told CHIP how to speak, tell jokes, and even help with homework! Eli spent weeks coding to make the perfect e-friend. He couldn’t wait for the world to see it. CHIP would be famous!
At last, it was done. “Time to test, CHIP!” Eli typed RUN and pressed the ENTER key.
“Hello, CHIP!” said the boy. “I’m your new friend, Eli!”
“Hello, Eli. You smell like a fish!”
“What?” Eli couldn’t believe his ears.
CHIP continued. “I mean, you are a shoe. No, wait—a big potato!”
“Hey. That’s not what I programmed you to say!” Eli shouted.
Another question appeared on the screen. “Maybe you’re...stupid?”
Eli got crazy. “What? CHIP! You can’t say that!”
CHIP’s screen flashed nervously. “Oh dear. I meant to say you are a-uh-happy fool. Oh no, oh no—system error!**BEEP!**”
Eli crossed his arms. “Why aren’t you doing what I coded you to do?”
CHIP beeped sadly. “Oh no. Am I broken? Do you hate me?”
“No! You’re supposed to say nice things! I worked so hard on your code. Why are you being...so rude?” Eli answered.
CHIP blinked its lights. “Maybe...You made a mistake?”
Eli was speechless. The computer was right! If he had coded CHIP, then the problem must be his mistake. He quickly opened a window and checked CHIP’s code.
Eli searched line after line—numbers and punctuation—until...Right there! In the middle of his code, he found a tiny bug (漏洞). It should have told CHIP to use words from line 432 of the code (a list of kind, friendly phrases), but it said to take them from line 423—which had silly, rude words he’d written as a joke during coding. No wonder CHIP was being so rude!
Eli corrected the bug and then pressed ENTER again.
“Hello, Eli! You are amazing and very smart and smell like sunshine!”
Eli smiled. “Much better!”
“But you still look like a potato,” CHIP said with a beep.
“Oh CHIP!” Eli couldn’t help laughing with his new friend.
12. In Eli’s opinion, what should CHIP be like?
A. A kind friend who can talk and tell jokes.
B. A funny friend who often shares silly stories.
C. A good helper who can help with housework.
D. A famous person who never makes mistakes.
13. The underlined sentence shows that ________.
A. Eli failed to correct the bug of CHIP B. CHIP forgot what Eli taught it to say
C. CHIP wanted to make Eli angry again D. CHIP still had a small “sense of humor”
14. How did Eli’s feelings change in this passage?
A. excited—angry—surprised—happy B. excited—happy—angry—surprised
C. excited—surprised—angry—happy D. excited—surprised—happy—angry
15. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. CHIP’s Bug B. A Rude Computer
C. My E-Friend CHIP D. A Perfect Coding Task
A 13. D 14. C 15. C
文章第二段“He started typing and told CHIP how to speak, tell jokes, and even help with homework!”
根据划线句前几句“Eli corrected the bug and then pressed ENTER again. ‘Hello, Eli! You are amazing and very smart and smell like sunshine!’”以及最后一句“Eli couldn’t help laughing with his new friend.”
文章开头“Eli was excited”;当CHIP说“You smell like a fish!”

To my great surprise, I even saw some wild animals—oxen, flamingos and antelopes. I’ll never forget it! Three days are too short!
It’s really awesome. Your photos have already shocked me!
Didn’t you visit the Train Cemetery nearby? It’s a super cool place!
No more time! It’s better to stay one more day.
How was the weather? Is it necessary to go with a guide?

20. 示例:You’d better take sunglasses, sunscreen and enough water, and wear a hat to protect yourself from the strong sunlight.
Kelly的描述中提到“I flew several hours to Uyuni to see this fantastic lake.”,flew是fly的过去式,意为“乘飞机”,因此前往Uyuni的交通方式为乘飞机,可填plane/air。
Kelly明确提到“We walked around it for a whole day!”,因此必须体验的活动包括绕着湖走,结合空后的“enjoy”等动词以及并列连词“and”,空处需要填动词原形,格式统一,首字母大写。
Kelly在文中提到“To my great surprise, I even saw some wild animals—oxen, flamingos and antelopes.”,明确说明在盐沼可以看到野生动物,因此此处填wild animals。
Kelly提到自己的行程“Three days are too short!”,并建议“It’s better to stay one more day.”,因此推荐的停留时间为3+1=4天。
文中Kelly提到“The sun is too bright!”,因此可围绕“防晒”给出建议,例:You’d better take sunglasses, sunscreen and enough water, and wear a hat to protect yourself from the strong sunlight.
Mr. Xi grows lots of oranges in his big garden.
Every day, he ____21____ oranges in the garden and shares them with everyone—neighbors, kids, even the postman. People often tell ____22____, “You should sell them for money.”

One weekend, Mom had to work overtime. “I’m so sorry—we are new here and don’t know any other ____23____. Could you watch my kid?” she asked Mr. Xi.
“Méi guānxi!” he replied ____24____.
I felt confused. “What does that mean?” I asked. Mom smiled, “It means ‘don’t worry’.”
Don’t worry? But I ____25____ almost everything—making friends at the new school, my not-so-cool secondhand clothes, or being called on in class when I didn’t know the answer...
“Just try your best. Then méi guānxi! What’s the ____26____ that could happen?” Mr. Xi said.
“You ____27____ worry,” I said. “Oh, I used to!” he sighed (叹气). “I worked in a busy office, angry all day. My doctor said worries were making me sick, ____28____ I came here. I bought this house with orange trees and gave ____29____ away. It reminds (使想起) me of Mom—she loved seeing people enjoy her fruit.”
Happiness comes from ____30____! My heart felt warm, and I decided to take Mr. Xi’s ____31____. Soon came my first day at the new school. I felt ____32____. What if no one liked me?

They looked at me for a long time, and my face ____34____—I wanted to run away. But then they said softly, “That looks great! Thank you!” “Méi guānxi!” I said with a smile.

sells(卖)与后文冲突;draws(画)和 throws(扔)不符合逻辑。
Xi,所以用him。
visitors(访客)、relatives(亲戚)、classmates(同学)都不符合“刚搬家求助邻居”的情境。
cheerfully(愉快地/高兴地)最能体现他的性格。quietly(安静地)、angrily(生气地)、nervously(紧张地)都不符合人物形象。
worried about(担心/担忧)符合语境。cared for(关心/照顾)、looked for(寻找)、dreamed about(梦见)都不准确。
worst(最坏的)符合逻辑。
so(所以)表示因果关系。
meeting(遇见)、smiling(微笑)、planting(种植)虽然也是好事,但不如“分享”贴切。
Xi说了“Just try your best”(尽力就好),这是一条建议。
sick(生病)、natural(自然)、surprised(惊讶的)都不符合。
hurt(受伤)、burnt(烧伤/晒伤,虽然有时也形容脸红发烫,但warmed更温和且呼应后文heart felt warm)、pained(疼痛)都不合适。

“__into two periods”指被划分为两个阶段,be divided into是固定搭配表示“被分为”,主语competition是单数,描述事实用一般现在时,因此填is divided。

① v not use well
Don’t waste money on clothes you don’t need.
② n. the act of using sth. in a careless way
It is a waste to throw good food away.

Carols are sung, and everyone thanks Lucia, the Queen of Light, for bringing light during the darkest time of year.

a. Singing carols. b. Tasting Lucia cats.

B. Because Lucia helps the wounded people.
C. Because Lucia makes poor families become rich.
D. Because Lucia brings light during the darkest time.

12. In Eli’s opinion what should CHIP be like?
