Last September, I drove to a protected wetland near my home in Oakland, California. It was the first time that I had gone somewhere merely to watch birds. Since this unique journey, I’ve seen 452 species, including 307 this year alone.
In some birding circles, people claim anyone who looks at birds is a birder. I’ve cared about birds and other animals for my entire life, and I’ve written about them throughout my two decades as a science writer, but I mark the moment when I specifically chose to devote time and energy to them as the moment I became a birder.
Birding has significantly increased the time spent outdoors. It has motivated me to explore Oakland in ways I never would have. While birding, I seem impervious to heat, cold, hunger and thirst. My senses focus only on the present, and my head becomes extremely untroubled. I also feel a much deeper connection to the natural world, which I have long written about but always remained slightly distant from.
These recent years have taught me that I’m smaller when I’m not actively looking after myself, that I have value for my world and my community beyond ceaseless production, and that pursuits like birding that encourage joy, wonder and bond with places are not sidebars to a fulfilled life but the essence.
It’s easy to perceive birding as something you do when you’re not working, not being productive, and even an escape from reality. Instead, for me, birding means absorbing myself in the present moment: my thoughts quiet, my senses heightened, and I respond to real, observable events in nature with focused awareness without being distracted (使分心) by small, unimportant matters. I don’t need to know who the main characters are on social media and what everyone is commenting on them, when I can instead spend an hour trying to locate a rare bird.
24. Why did the author think the journey to the wetland special?
A. He protected bird species there. B. He fell in love with birding again.
C. He made his true start as a birder. D. He completed his writing during it.
25. What does the underlined word “impervious” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Attentive. B. Subject. C. Resistant. D. Sensitive.
26. What lesson does the author probably learn?
A. Outdoor pursuits are a must-have. B. Self-care can help fuel self-worth.
C. Happiness serves as the core of life. D. Productivity defines personal value.
27. How does the author view birding according to the last paragraph?

【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“It was the first time that I had gone somewhere merely to watch birds. Since this unique journey, I’ve seen 452 species, including 307 this year alone. (这是我第一次专门去某个地方观鸟。自从这次特别的旅行后,我已经见过452种鸟类,仅今年就有307种)”及第二段“I’ve cared about birds and other animals for my entire life, and I’ve written about them throughout my two decades as a science writer, but I mark the moment when I specifically chose to devote time and energy to them as the moment I became a birder. (我一生都在关心鸟类和其他动物,在我作为一名科学作家的二十年里,我一直在写关于它们的文章,但我把我特别选择为它们投入时间和精力的那一刻标记为我成为观鸟者的那一时刻)”可知,作者认为这次湿地之旅特别,是因为它让自己真正开启了观鸟者的身份。故选C。
【25题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段“While birding, I seem impervious to heat, cold, hunger and thirst. My senses focus only on the present, and my head becomes extremely untroubled (观鸟时,我似乎对冷热饥渴都impervious。我的感官只专注于当下,内心变得异常平静)”可知,观鸟时作者专注于当下,不受冷热饥渴的影响,因此“impervious”意为“抵抗的、不受影响的”。故选C。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“These recent years have taught me that I'm smaller when I'm not actively looking after myself, that I have value for my world and my community beyond ceaseless production, and that pursuits like birding that encourage joy, wonder and bond with places are not sidebars to a fulfilled life but the essence (这些年我明白了,当我不积极关爱自己时,我会变得渺小;除了无休止的工作产出,我对自己的世界和社区也有价值;而像观鸟这样能带来喜悦、惊奇并与周遭建立联结的追求,并非充实生活的点缀,而是其本质)”可知,作者领悟到能带来快乐的追求是生活的核心,即幸福是生活的核心。故选C。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Instead, for me, birding means absorbing myself in the present moment: my thoughts quiet, my senses heightened, and I respond to real, observable events in nature with focused awareness without being distracted by small, unimportant matters (相反,对我来说,观鸟意味着全身心投入当下:思绪沉静,感官敏锐,我以专注的意识回应自然界中真实可观察的事物,不会被琐碎小事分心)”可知,作者认为观鸟是对现实的全身心投入。故选A。
C
Sound signals are vital for animals deep in the dark oceans to communicate and search for food. That way of life has been threatened from increasing human noise. A leading cause is shipping-noise emissions.
With roughly 90% of traded goods traveling by sea, quieting the ocean through reductions in shipping is untenable. Efforts to make ships more efficient and less polluting may also reduce noise. But experts say those measures won’t do enough to restore quiet. So, a range of technologies are being developed to allow humans and other animals to co-exist in the ocean.
Much of the underwater noise a ship produces comes from its propeller (螺旋桨). The low-frequency noise it produces can travel thousands of metres underwater without losing strength, interrupting the movements of whales which use these frequencies to communicate.
One solution by researchers at the University of British Columbia(UBC), makes the metal propeller flexible, allowing their tips to bend and twist, preventing bubbles from forming and reducing the noise the propeller produces, says Rajeev of UBC.
More ideas are also on the table. Giovanni, a marine-engineering researcher, is investigating whether an acoustic (音响的) black hole can help. Such an object, which aims to trap sound like black holes trap light, can be built by fixing steel beams to the inside of the ship. Laboratory tests show this can reduce vibrations like the best available alternatives, without the added weight or fire risk these often involve.
Tom Smith, a researcher in naval architecture, says that technological solutions for reducing ocean noise are abundant. What is missing is a willingness for shipbuilders and owners to use them. Refitting ships to be quieter is complex and costly, and not seen as a priority at present.
That may change. Some seaports now offer discounts equal to thousands of dollars for ships that meet the highest level of noise reduction. Since the International Maritime Organisation has promised to reduce carbon emissions from international shipping by 70% by 2040, this may prove a good deal.
28. What’s the harm shipping-noise emissions do to a deep-sea animal?
A. Its habitat is polluted by the emissions. B. Its way of communication is interrupted.
C. It can’t find enough neighboring animals. D. It has to travel a longer distance for food.
29. What does the underlined word “untenable” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Impractical. B. Sensible. C. Irregular. D. Universal.
30. What’s the difficulty in adopting technological solutions according to Tom?
A. The technology isn’t reliable to be used. B. It may do great harm to the environment.
C. It’s complicated and adds to the cost of ships. D. It has drawn criticism from the government.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The importance of sound signals in the ocean.
B. The role of shipping in global trade and its environmental impact.
C. The challenges faced by marine engineers in reducing noise pollution.
D. The impact of shipping noise on marine life and the potential solutions.

In the blink of an eye, artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly entered every walk of life, from self-driving taxis to software that reads X-rays, to virtual assistants that can schedule meetings and draft e-mails. However, will AI displace entire industries as mechanized factories did before?
Like past world-changing tools such as mechanical cloth-making machines, AI is set to reshape the workplace greatly. But techno-pessimists argue AI’s impact has never been seen before. Economists estimate AI could rob 40% of jobs, with machines replacing much skilled human work and note that even remaining jobs may see declining wages due to reduced labor value. Amid these worries, 2024 Nobel Prize-winning economists Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson advise learning from David Ricardo’s flexible thinking about the early Industrial Revolution.
In his work Principles of Political Economy and Taxation economist Ricardo initially supported new spinning machines (纺纱机), believing they would promote productivity for all. Though home spinners were displaced, many shifted to weaving (织布). However, technology changed everything: one machine outperformed 10-20 handweavers, ending cottage industry. Displaced weavers had no choices as factories created few new jobs, leading to falling wages and social unrest. Witnessing these consequences, Ricardo transformed his view. His 1821 revised work acknowledged that factors boosting national income might also make population extra resources and worsen laborers’ conditions.
England eventually learned from the struggles of handweavers and the working class. The government expanded political representation for industrial cities, passed the 1833 Factory Act to manage child labor, and ended the protectionist Corn Laws in the 1840s to lower food costs.
The history repeats today. As the AI era approaches, Johnson notes that AI has attracted enormous talents, similar to the late-1990s Internet boom, but history — especially the Industrial Revolution — shows that “new miracle machines do not guarantee benefits for most people.” With thoughtful policies, AI can avoid repeating past mistakes and build an inclusive future. When technology is guided by wisdom and responsibility, it can become a powerful tool that lifts people up, reduces inequality, and brings greater opportunities to all.
32. Which question can paragraph 2 answer?
A. How is AI to affect the work settings?
B. Why has technology replaced human work?
C. Who suffered most from the Industrial Revolution?
D. What did cloth-making machines bring to workers?
33. Why did David Ricardo change his attitude?
A. The closure of cottage industry. B. The appearance of spinning and weaving.
C. The indifference of the government. D. The suffering of workers and the society.
34. What lesson can be learned from the text?
A. Every step forward is progress. B. Technology makes the complex simple.
C. History is where you find the future. D. With great power comes great responsibility.
35. What might be talked about following the last paragraph?
A. Details of David Ricardo’s theories. B. Policy examples for guiding AI.
C. The introduction of the Internet boom. D. The development of AI technology.
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. B

故填was used。
故填With。
故填to take。

One day, I was sitting at the breakfast table with my five-year-old son, Mateo. I was still recovering from an operation. “Mom, let’s play,” Mateo looked at me and said. Trying hard to ignore the pain in my stomach, I shook my head and replied, “Not today, sweetie.” These days, getting out of bed was a real struggle for me. I longed for strength and happiness, yet the future seemed so hopeless.
All of a sudden, Mateo jumped up from where he was sitting on the kitchen floor. He shouted, “Bird!” and then ran towards our courtyard. I looked in the direction he was looking and, sure enough, there was a white dove (鸽子) landing in a rubber tree. It stayed there for a little while and then flew away. It was quite odd because I’d never seen a white dove in our neighborhood before.
The next morning, I dragged myself into the kitchen. To my surprise, the dove was back, and this time it had a mate carrying some sticks. I pointed to the tree and said to Mateo, “Look, they’re going to build a nest.” Throughout the week, the doves flew in and out of the courtyard, building their nest on top of the rubber tree.
Mateo was extremely excited. Every morning, he would rush into the kitchen and stand by the sliding glass door. He would talk to the birds as they worked. His joy was influential. Although feeling sad, I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits.
However, things took a turn for the worse. The courtyard seemed like a safe place for a nest, but the rubber tree’s small branches were not stable at all. One night, a strong wind blew, and the doves’ nest was blown to the ground. I heard the small branches break.
I checked the damage. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. They didn’t even look at the pile of sticks that used to be their nest. They started building all over again. Unfortunately, the wind destroyed their work again. But day after day, they kept starting again as if nothing had occurred.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

“Look! The birds have returned!” Mateo shouted.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】示例:
I realized that I should take some measures. Having given me comfort in my darkest times, the doves deserved my help in return. I searched around the house carefully, found some pieces of wood and made a solid wooden nest for them. With a lot of effort and care, I managed to climb up a ladder, attached the nest to the rubber tree and covered it with some leaves. It was a challenging job, but the doves’ determination gave me the confidence and strength. After finishing the work, Mateo and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and watching with patience.
“Look! The birds have returned!” Mateo shouted. Hearing my son’s excited voice, clear as a bell, I looked up. The doves were circling near the nest happily and seemed to be satisfied with the new home. They started to bring small branches and soft feathers right away. Several weeks later, four babies came out of the eggs. The young birds developed day by day, and around a month later, they were fully grown and could fly. As watching them fly high and hearing them sing, I felt more positive and hopeful. The doves taught me to face difficulties bravely and keep moving forward.

It’s easy to perceive birding as something you do when you’re not working not being productive, and even an escape from reality.
A. A complete engagement with reality. B. A temporary escape from busy life.
C. A training in focus and observation. D. A substitute for online activities.
D
In his work Principles of Political Economy and Taxation, economist Ricardo initially supported new spinning machines (纺纱机), believing they would promote productivity for all.
34 What lesson can be learned from the text?

It can be challenging to figure out the perfect way to arrange your furniture if you have a small bedroom. However, this can be simplified by placing your key furniture. ___36___
●Place your bed against the most practical wall.
As is often the case with small bedrooms, there may only be one wall in your room that makes sense for the placement of the headboard or the head of the bed. ___37___ This may be the wall across from the door with electrical outlets on either side.
●Center your headboard along the wall.
If you want to be able to walk around all the sides of your bed, centering the bed along the wall with space left on either side may be the best choice. If you choose this option, try to keep the rest of your layout relatively symmetrical (对称的) and balanced. Take into account how big the bed can be. ___38___
●Arrange the bed toward one side of the room.
Pick the most practical wall to press your headboard against, but instead of centering the bed along the wall, slide it over to one side. ___39___ And it might allow you to squeeze a larger piece of furniture along the opposite wall.
● ___40___
This arrangement can be perfect for long, narrow spaces. Place your bed in the corner of your choice, with the headboard and one side of your bed touching the walls. This will leave the rest of the room open for other furniture items.
A. Push the bed into a corner.
B. Downsize your bed, if possible.
C. Locate the wall that works best for this purpose.
D. When approaching this task, start with your bed.
E. If you can, choose a full-sized bed for your small bedroom.
