Super Fast Train on Its Way
The world’s fastest high-speed train is on the way.
On December 29, 2024, China brought to light a prototype (样车) of the train. It marks a new era for the country’s high-speed trains.
The newest model is called the CR450. CR stands for China Railway. The CR450 is able to run at 450 kilometers per hour in tests. When it enters service, its speed is expected to reach 400 kilometers per hour. 1 The CR400 came out in 2017. It operates at 350 kilometers per hour.
2 According to its developers, the CR450 offers a quieter ride. The noise levels inside the train have been reduced. Meanwhile, cabin (座舱) spaces have been increased so that passengers can enjoy more comfortable rides.
In addition, the train has shorter braking (刹车) distance. It is also designed with greater stability (稳定性). All this helps to ensure the safety of passengers.
The new train has been tested across several high-speed rail lines in China. 3 Further tests are needed, said the China State Railway Group. All tests are set to be finished within two years.
4 It has built the world’s largest railway network. The network covers almost all corners of the country. High-speed rail has been an effective means of travel for long journeys as it allows people to travel around with ease and comfort.
A.It is not yet put into use, though.

That one looks like a rabbit. Or is the larger one a whale? Whatever shape they take, they’re clouds. So what are clouds, exactly? 1
●Clouds are floating (浮动的) water.
Clouds are made of small water drops. Each drop is made of many flying water molecules (分子). They stay together around a tiny piece of dust (尘埃) or salt. How small are cloud drops? A shoebox of clouds might hold millions of cloud drops.
● 2
Clouds look light and soft, but they hold much water. And water is heavy. The water in an average cotton-ball cloud may weigh as much as a group of elephants.
●Things live in clouds.
Have you ever dreamed of living on a cloud? It would probably be cold and wet, with no place to sit down. But weather balloons have discovered insects inside clouds as high as 20 miles above the earth. 3 Airplane pilots have ever found butterflies at 10,000 feet.
●Clouds don’t last.
Clouds are always changing. They form and then change into gas soon. They are changing shapes as the wind blows them across the sky. Will the shapes stay long? 4 But some small soft clouds often last 10 minutes.
So take a look at the cloud before it disappears—what does that cloud look like?
A.Clouds are heavy.
B.Clouds look like elephants.
C.Some big clouds can hang around all day.
D.The following can help you know more about them.
E.Most of the insects inside clouds are blown there by the wind.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.E 4.C
1.根据“So what are clouds, exactly?”
2.根据“Clouds look light and soft, but they hold much water.”
3.根据“But weather balloons have discovered insects inside clouds as high as 20 miles above the earth.”
4.根据“But some small soft clouds often last 10 minutes.”
· 代词:如 it, they, this, these。
· 连词:如 but, however, so, because, for example。
总结信号词:如果选项里有 in a word, as a result, so 这类词,它很可能是总结句。

Microplastics (微塑料) are very small. 1 A new study said that by 2040, microplastic pollution could be twice as bad as it is now. Scientists learned this by looking at 20 years of studies on microplastics.
Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic. They come from many places. 2 Every time they are washed, they shed (掉落) microplastics. When water bottles and other big plastic items (物品) are left outside, they break down slowly into microplastics.
According to National Geographic, microplastics are usually less than five millimeters in size. This small size lets them go everywhere, even in water and air. They don’t break down easily and can stay in the environment for hundreds of years.
3 In August, The Conversation reported that scientists found microplastics in people’s brains for the first time. They may hurt brain cells (细胞) and change how the brain works.
Wild animals are also at risk from microplastic pollution. Each year, up to three million tons of microplastics end up in the ocean. 4 To deal with the problem, scientists think the best solution right now is to make and use less plastic.

Do you know anything about the Moon? How much do you know about it? Do you want to go there? Scientists have told us so much about the Moon.
They have discovered that the Moon is an unfriendly place. There is no air or water. There are only dust and rocky mountains covering its surface. 1 When the Sun shines in the day, the temperature is very high. Daytime temperatures can reach 127℃ when the Sun shines, hot enough to boil water! But at night, it drops to -173℃, colder than Antarctica.
2 As we know, sound can only travel in the air but there is no air on the Moon. Without air, sound cannot travel. Although two astronauts stood close, they would need radios to communicate. Even a loud crash would be completely silent!
From the Moon, Earth looks like a bright blue-and-white ball hanging in the dark sky. The scene would be wonderful. 3
Though challenging, China has made amazing progress in exploring the Moon. In 2013, Chang’e-3 became the first Chinese spacecraft to soft-land on the Moon, carrying the Yutu rover that studied lunar soil for 31 months. In 2024, Chang’e-6 successfully brought back 1.935 kilograms of moon samples, helping scientists discover new facts about the Moon’s volcanic history. 4

Every one of us has a chance to try new things. When we try something new, there’s always the risk. 1
For example, we may try a food we have never had before, and we don’t like the food finally. We may try a new style of music and get a headache. We may try a new sport like skating and end up falling down a lot. 2 We may try to speak or write a different language and end up getting into an embarrassing (使人尴尬的) situation.
It sounds risky to us. 3 For example, we can try a new food, and we fall in love with it finally. We may try a new sport and fall down but we get back up and finally experience pleasure, even for a minute. We may see why people love that sport so much.
If we try a new kind of music, we may regret we didn’t find it sooner. We can see a new kind of art and may be surprised at its beauty. We can try to write or speak a different language, and we may be a little embarrassed at first, but we know that the only way to improve is to make mistakes and keep on trying.
4 Then you will have chances to get rewards (回报).
A.How can we try a new sport?
B.But it is not so bad to take risks.
C.All in all, keep trying something new.

Passage 6
As we know, eating vegetables is good for us. Why do some people like them but others don’t? 1 According to the research, people who eat vegetables and show a clear dislike for them can influence others.
2 How does it affect a person watching them? A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating broccoli (西兰花) . The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neutral (neither happy nor sad) , or look disgusted.
The study found that when people in the videos look disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them began to like broccoli less. 3 When someone had a smile while eating broccoli, people watching them did not like broccoli more.
By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible. 4
The research focused only on adults, but the team believed that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either.
How does the behavior of adults influence children’s choices of food? The team hopes to understand more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat more healthy foods.
A.The opposite was not true, however.
B.People may make facial expressions when eating.
C.For example, children are more likely to choose food their parents like.
D.A new study has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason.

2.空后问“How does it affect a person watching them?”,说明前文应提到一种行为。

The Feynman Technique (费曼学习法) is named after Richard Feynman who is the Nobel Prize-winning physicist. 1
First, pick a topic. Choose something you want to learn, like a scientific theory or a historical fact.
2 Act like you’re teaching a little kid. Use easy words and examples. This force you to divide difficult ideas into their basic parts. For example, if it’s about how a plane flies, you could say, “A plane has wings. The shape of the wings makes the air push it up, so it can fly in the sky.” If you can’t explain well, that’s okay.
Third, find what you don’t know. When teaching, you’ll notice some parts which you’re not sure about. 3 Write them down and look at your books or notes to learn about these parts.
Finally, make it simpler and review. After learning more, make your explanation even easier to understand.
4 The Feynman Technique works best with repetition, and that is why going through all the prior (先前的) steps just once is usually not enough to fully understand the topic.
This technique helps ninth graders learn better. It makes hard things easy to understand. It also helps in getting ready for tests and making you better at talking about what you learned.
A.Then use fewer hard words to repeat the steps.

“I want to become a spaceman to explore the universe.” When you are thinking like this, you are “Thinking Big”. Thinking big means aiming to achieve a lot. It helps you realize your dreams. So, how can you think big? 1

Set clear goals. Without goals, big ideas are nearly daydreams. 2 They guide you to your destinations (目的地). After you set goals, you know exactly what to do and where to go. The clearer your goals are, the better thinker you will be.
3 Without challenges, there will never be big ideas. Without challenges, there will never be much progress. Picture your challenges in your head, and you will think big and get unexpected solutions.

B.The CR450 does well not just in speed.
C.How to reduce the noise of the high-speed train?

4.根据文章最后一段“It has built the world’s largest railway network… covers almost all corners of the country”可知,中国现在是铁路发展的世界领导者。
2.根据“Clouds look light and soft, but they hold much water.”

A.This can be bad for our health.
B.But they bring big problems.
C.So there are different forms of microplastics.
D.For example, about 60 percent of material made into clothing is plastic.

Have you heard of the Chinese idiom “tao li man tian xia”?
1 Peach and plum trees are used as a metaphor (比喻) for students. You may wonder why people compare students to these two kinds of trees.
In fact, it comes from an ancient story about Zizhi, an officer and educator, who lived in the state of Wei during the Spring and Autumn Period. 2 As a result, he left his state, and set up a private school and started to teach students by himself.
After setting up the school, Zizhi accepted all the students who showed great interest in study, no matter what family they came from. 3 And he often pointed at a peach and a plum tree in his garden and said, “You should work hard to become a useful person so that you can benefit society, just like when the peach and plum trees bloom and yield fruit (开花结果).”
Keeping the teacher’s words in their minds, many of Zizhi’s students went on to different countries and achieved great success. 4
Later, when Zizhi traveled around different places, he saw his students and the trees they planted. He was deeply moved. “My students are like peach and plum trees. They are everywhere, and they have achieved great success,” he said.

Would you like to join future missions to build a lunar research station?
A.The Moon is also a silent world.
B.The Moon is the closest planet to Earth.
C.These achievements show China’s growing space technology.
D.The temperature of the Moon is different from day to night.

D.The risk is that we will not be satisfied with our choice.
E.We may see a different kind of art and be completely disappointed.
Passage 1
Loving Yourself in the Coming Year
“Love you, laoji” is a catchphrase now. Literally, “laoji” means “the old self”. Although calling ourselves this way is a bit funny, it makes us feel warm at heart. 1
To ring in the New Year, here are some tips for you to love laoji more in the coming year.
Don’t Chase Perfection. Waiting to be perfect often means never starting. 2 But doing something imperfect is better than doing nothing at all. Start small. Learn as you go. The first step matters most.
Take Real Rest. Real rest isn’t sleeping all day or staying up late on your phone. That only makes you more tired. Try active rest-gentle activities that help your body and mind recover (恢复) . 3 Choose one or two small things each day to recharge (充电) .
Talk to Yourself Kindly. Pay attention to how you talk to yourself. 4 Try saying, “It’s okay.” Or “I’ll try again next time.” Treat yourself the way you would treat a good friend.
A.Many people put things off because they’re afraid of making mistakes.
B.When things go wrong, don’t be too hard on laoji.
C.They are beginning to see self-care as a kind of romance, instead of just waiting for love from others.
D.Feel the sunshine, go for a walk, stretch (伸展) a little, or listen to music you like.

3 The middle part is about the busy wharf (码头) of Bian River, the important transportation line in the Northern Song Dynasty.

Passage 3
(25-26八年级下·辽宁沈阳·开学考试)Let’s imagine this: Your parents are going out of town for a week. You’re left with 800 yuan. How will you spend it? It would be unwise to spend the money at the mall, especially if you already have great clothes, right? 1 You’d probably also want to put some money aside for unexpected situations.
Well, you need to learn how to budget. It’s all about deciding what matters the most to you and how much you want to spend on those things.
Working out your priorities (优先事项) is actually the most important part of budgeting. 2 You have to consider saving money to afford it. The next time your friend invites you to join them for a party, you might decide to refuse.
But having a budget doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. You just have to get creative. Instead of meeting your friends at the pizza shop and then going to the movies, you can invite them over to your house. You can buy some frozen pizzas at the supermarket and watch a movie online. 3 .
If you search the Internet for budgeting tips, you’ll find many. You have plenty of chances to test them. Once you find a way that works for you, it’s easier to get excited about budgeting.
4 If you go over your budget, just try to learn from your mistakes. It’s part of becoming a responsible spender.
A.It’s a lot cheaper but just as fun.
B.For example, you plan to buy a new bike.
C.Keep in mind that even adults make mistakes at times.
D.You can also ask your parents for help if your money runs out.
E.A smarter way to spend that money would be on food and transportation (交通)。

“Keep calm and carry on” You can see this message written on many T-shirts and other tourist souvenirs in London and the rest of the UK. 1 Some examples include: “Keep calm and drink tea”; “Keep calm and love dogs”; “Keep calm and learn English”. As you can see, you can replace the “carry on” part for anything you want, really!
2 Well, it comes from World War II. It was a message used for a poster created by the British government to calm people down and encourage them during the war when London was being attacked. The idea was to carry on with life as normal, as if there was no war.
Staying calm when you’re in trouble is known as a very British thing to do. British people are famous for keeping a “stiff upper lip”. 3 You stay calm and don’t show people how you are really feeling.
Are British people still like this today? Do they still keep a “stiff upper lip”? Modern Britain is very different from how it was 60 years ago. 4 But if “Keep calm and carry on” is still so famous today, then it must be something that British people still think and care about. So next time you are scared or in danger, just keep calm and carry on!
A.But where does the first phrase come from?
B.Many people see this phrase as a symbol of British spirit.
C.It has become so famous that there are many other forms of it.
D.This means your lips don’t shake when you are excited or scared.
E.British people probably show their feelings more than they used to.

Teachers have a very special and important job because they play a big part in helping children learn, grow and do well in life. World Teachers’ Day, on 5 October, is a day to say thanks to them.
Teachers around the world
Every child should have free education, but unluckily, millions of children in the world are not in school. 7
One of the reasons that so many children can’t go to school is that there aren’t enough teachers worldwide. To make sure every child can go to school, we’ll need more teachers.
How to become a teacher
2 Teachers go to university and do special training. They learn about different subjects and how to teach them to students.
Teachers have to listen to their students and understand how they feel, so they need to be patient and kind. If you enjoy helping people learn, teaching might be a great job for you.
Say thank you to teachers
Teaching can be a difficult job because teachers must help all their students, and every student has different needs. Often there are a large number of children in a class. 3 So, take a moment to say thanks to them on World Teachers’ Day!
How to celebrate World Teachers’ Day

B.Teachers work long hours and have lots of responsibilities.

E.In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous.
Passage 7(25-26
Recently, a phrase from a dialect, “Ai Ni Lao Ji, Ming Tian Jian” (meaning “Love Yourself, See You Tomorrow”) , has gone viral (走红) on short video platforms. 1 It even became a warm secret code among young people.
The story behind it is simple. A video blogger felt too lazy to peel a grapefruit, but finally did it himself and said the sentence to himself like talking to a friend. 2 . It turns the idea of “loving yourself” into real practice.
More importantly, the phrase shows a value shift. 3 They are beginning to see self-care as a kind of romance, instead of just waiting for love from others.
Some may worry that focusing on self-care makes young people isolated. However, this is not true at all. In fact, a person who knows how to care for himself can better care for others, just like a full cup can pour water for others.
In short, the popularity of “Love Yourself, See You Tomorrow” is not by chance. 4 . It reminds us that loving ourselves helps us face life bravely and meaningfully.
A.This small moment actually catches the common feeling of young people today.
B.It reflects young people’s positive attitude towards a better life.
C.The blogger has millions of followers who supported him.
D.Young people are now paying more attention to taking care of themselves.

It is normal to feel a bit nervous about exams. Exam stress can cause you to feel nervous or depressed. If you have any of these feelings or worries about exam pressure, you are not alone. Here are some things you can do.
Open up to others. Let your trusted friends and family know if you’re having a hard time. They can be there to support you, encourage you and offer good advice. 1 Keeping it all to yourself will only make things worse, so don’t be afraid to open up.
Learn to get help. Think about all the practical support you need, and be honest with yourself about it. You are allowed to ask for help. 2 Tell your teachers about your worries. They may have talked to lots of students who are going through similar things, so they can give you some helpful advice.
3 One more thing you can do is to be proud of yourself. Think about all the things you have achieved so far. It can be helpful to write lots of things you like about yourself, and the things other people value about you, too.
Do breathing exercise. Deep breathing can help relax us in both mind and body. We can breathe deeply through our nose, then blow slowly through our mouth. 4
If you follow the things above, I’m sure you will never be worried about exams.
A.Sleeping for a long time is no use to your worries.
B.Your teachers are a good choice.
C.You don’t have to go through all the worries alone.
D.Take pride in yourself.

Electricity makes our lives convenient, but it can also bring us serious risks if we’re not careful. The real danger lies in the way you use electricity, especially in wet places like the bathroom and kitchen.
1 Using them the wrong way can lead to electric shocks, fires or worse. You’ve probably been told this before, but it’s easy to forget when you’re in a hurry.
Do you often use household appliances (家用电器) like a hair dryer or curling iron (卷发棒) while standing on a wet bathroom floor? 2 Also, never leave these appliances plugged (插上电源) in when you’re not around. When you are finished, unplug them softly—do not pull on the power line!
You should always be careful with electricity. Imagine you’re in the shower and your smartphone rings. What would you do? Would you rush out, all wet, to check it? 3 .
If you have a younger brother or sister, your parents might ask you to look after him or her while they’re out. Never reach for an electrical toy or appliance that’s still plugged in and has fallen into a wet sink (水槽). If you’re dry, unplug it first. 4 Of course, you need to ask your parents to show you how to do this beforehand.
As a teenager, you should learn—and always remember—how to stay safe with electricity.
A.Electricity and water are a deadly pair.
B.Pay attention to water safety in daily life.
C.In an emergency, turn off the main power first.
D.This is a dangerous habit, and you should never do it again!
E.This can be dangerous if the phone is plugged in and powering up.
Passage 10

B.Science subjects are the only ones that suit the Feynman Technique.
C.These are the gaps in your understanding.
D.The Feynman Technique is a powerful learning way with four steps.
E.Second, teach it simply.
