This waste kills millions of marine animals each year, pollutes fragile coastal ecosystems, and breaks down into microplastics that enter the food chain and reach the human body. Most of this plastic comes from single-use packaging, designed for days of use but able to persist in oceans for hundreds of years. Now, scientists and startups worldwide are turning to an unlikely solution to this global crisis: fungi.
At the heart of this innovation is mycelium (菌丝体), the root-like structure of fungi. Made of tiny thread-like filaments, mycelium grows by feeding on organic matter, binding into a strong, flexible, fully biodegradable material.
