Their campers limits are the same. C. The participants are of the same age range. D. They both offer free snacks and lunch. B From a young age, I collected role models. In school, as a teenager, I tried to channel Beyoncé. In the working world, I paid close attention to our female senior managers. By watching and copying others — especially women of color who looked or sounded like me — I gained confidence in my own abilities. But when I started my own company, my pool of potential role models became smaller. Only 2.1% of risk investment goes to women-founded companies. “Who could I look up to?” I wondered. “Who can I emulate?” I decided to create an inspiration wall in my office, with photos of the role models I could see — women like Oprah, Melinda, and Vicky, cofounder of a skincare brand. I never thought I’d meet these women, but their success gave me hope. Then one day, a couple of years ago, I surprised myself with a thought: what if I did reach out to one of my role models? I feared rejection, but my desire for connection was stronger. I chose Vicky, whose journey had long inspired me. I didn’t have her email address. So I tried a cold Instagram message, and she responded the next day! That was in 2022. We’ve spoken numerous times since, and the conversations have been invaluable. They’re rare chances to gain guidance from a successful woman. But here’s the most valuable lesson I gained: when Vicky first replied to me, I wasn’t the only one excited. Vicky was excited too—because she’s always looking for ways to support other women. All my life, I’d thought of role models as a one-way relationship: I’d gain strength from someone stronger. But the situation is more than that. I once sent Vicky a care package from my sunglasses company. She wrote me a thank-you note, and texted a selfie of her and her daughter wearing my products. Today, I keep that letter on my desk next to my keyboard — a reminder that, just as I believe in her, she believes in me. We’re all here to help each other grow. 4. Why did the author create an inspiration wall in her office? A. To encourage herself to work hard. B. To inspire her employees’ creativity. C. To make her workplace more attractive. D. To improve her employees’ work efficiency. 5. Why did the author choose to reach out to Vicky? A. She only had Vicky’s email address. B. She feared for being rejected by others. C. Vicky’s story had always motivated her. D. Vicky liked giving guidance to other women. 6. Which of the following can best describe the author? A. Creative and patient. B. Courageous and grateful. C. Honest and responsible. D. Talented and capable. 7. What is the best title for this passage? A. Practice Makes Perfect. B. Strength Flows Both ways. C. A Good Beginning Is Half Done. D. Actions Speak Louder Than Words. C Disneyland’s opening day, July 17, 1955, was a terrible experience. Rides broke down. Restaurants ran out of food and drink and drinking fountains were in short supply... All in front of a national audience of 90 million, then the largest live broadcast in television history on a day that would be known in Disney history as Black Sunday. But Disney’s story actually started two decades earlier with what Walt Disney called “Daddy’s Day”. On Saturdays in the 1930s and 1940s, Disney would take his two daughters to ride the Griffith Park merry-go-round, which they’d enjoy while he sat on a bench dreaming of ways for families to have fun together. Disney disliked the amusement parks they often visited, seeing them as dirty, unimaginative places run by rude employees. He thought he could do better. In 1939 he asked two animators (动画片制作者) at his movie studio to work on a plan for an amusement park. By 1952 the idea had expanded into a $1.5 million amusement park proposal that he presented to Burbank. The City Council, which feared such a project would create a carnival (嘉年华) atmosphere, rejected the proposal. Disney counted the rejection as fortunate setback. By now, his dream for a theme park had gone beyond the space available in Burbank. He searched locations throughout Southern California. A 160-acre orange garden, 22 miles south of Los Angeles, was soon selected. The ABC television network offered $5 million in loans and investments if Disney agreed to produce and host a one-hour weekly show called "Disneyland". The deal amounted to months of free advertising for the park and allowed Disney to introduce TV audiences, particularly kids, to the park. Disneyland opened then. The 5,000 expected guests increased to 28, 154, thanks to fake tickets. After the madness of opening day, Disney and his new park were criticized in the press. The media predicted a quick and early end. But the public didn’t listen. Visitors arrived in large groups, and within weeks Disneyland was a success. Over sixty years later, Disneyland’s popularity continues to grow, with total overall attendance topping 700 million and showing no signs of slowing down. 8. What mainly led to Walt Disney’s plan to build his own amusement park? A. His ambition to expand beyond the movie industry. B. His animators’ suggestion on an entertainment plan. C. His wish to create a better place for family recreation. D. His daughters’ unpleasant experience in the Griffith Park. 9. By “Disney counted the rejection as a fortunate setback” in paragraph 3, the author means the rejection ________. A. brought good luck to Disney and his park B. contributed to the difficulty of opening the park C. was viewed as a financial obstacle to the design of the park D. presented Disney with a favorable opportunity to rethink his plan 10. What can be learned about Disneyland from the passage? A. Everything went on smoothly before it opened. B. It spent $5 million on advertising for its opening. C. People’s enthusiasm for it increased despite criticism. D. Only invited guests could get into it on its opening day. 11. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Disneyland: How It All Began B. Disneyland: An Overnight Success C. Disneyland: How It Developed D. Disneyland: A Park with a Long History D The joy of giving is real, according to a study. Research presented in the Journal (杂志) of the Association for Psychological Science shows that those who give gifts are happier — and happier for longer — than those who receive gifts. Researchers conducted two studies last year. In one, participants were given $5 every day for five days and were required to spend the money on the same thing each day. Some participants were required to spend the money on themselves, while others were required to give to make a donation to charity. In a second experiment that was done online, participants played 10 rounds of a word puzzle game and each won 5 cents per round, which they could keep or donate. In both experiments, participants reported their overall happiness. Those who donated their money showed that their happiness declined at a much slower rate than those who kept the money or spent it on themselves. The researchers note that when people focus on an outcome, they can easily compare outcomes, which may diminish their sensitivity to each experience. When people focus on an action, they may focus less on comparison and instead experience each act of giving as a unique happiness-inducing event. Further analyses ruled out some potential alternative explanations, such as the possibility that participants who gave to others had to think longer and harder about what to give, which could promote higher happiness. The results are especially interesting because according to one of the researchers, Ed O’Brien of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, they conflict with past research. “If you want to sustain happiness over time, past research tells us that we need to take a break from what were currently consuming and experience something new. Our research reveals that the kind of thing may matter more than assumed: Repeated giving, even in identical ways to identical other, may continue to feel relatively fresh and relatively pleasurable the more we do it,” O’Brien said. So for all the holiday gifts you give this season, expect to feel happy and know that feeling is going to stick around for a while. 12. What’s the function of the first paragraph? A. To lead to the topic. B. To stress the importance of the study. C. To recommend a journal. D. To persuade people to give gifts regularly. 13. Why did the researchers do two experiments? A. To challenge the past research. B. To rule out different experimental data. C. To show the benefits of donation. D. To make the research results more believable. 14. What does the underlined word “diminish” probably mean in the fourth paragraph? A. develop. B. show. C. reduce. D. keep. 15. What’s the main finding of the new study? A. Gift giving will result in longer happiness than receiving. B. Thinking longer and harder on giving will encourage higher happiness. C. The feeling of happiness will disappear soon if people just give holiday gifts. D. Taking a break from what were now doing will help people stay happy. If you are like most international students, you are probably pretty comfortable reading and writing in English. ____16____ Below are some tips to help you to improve your conversational skills. Disneyland: An Overnight Success C. Disneyland: How It Developed D. Disneyland: A Park with a Long History 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第二段最后一句“Disney disliked the amusement parks they often visited, seeing them as dirty, unimaginative places run by rude employees.(迪士尼不喜欢他们经常参观的游乐园,认为它们肮脏、缺乏想象力,由粗鲁的员工经营)”和第三段第一句“He thought he could do better. (他认为他可以做得更好)”可知,他希望创造一个更好的家庭娱乐场所,这导致沃尔特·迪士尼计划建造自己的游乐园。故选C。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段划线句后“By now, his dream for a theme park had gone beyond the space available in Burbank. He searched locations throughout Southern California. A 160-acre orange garden, 22 miles south of Los Angeles, was soon selected.(到目前为止,他对主题公园的梦想已经超出了伯班克现有的空间。他搜索了整个南加州的位置。一个160英亩的在洛杉矶南部22英里的橘子园很快被选中)”可知,在被拒绝后,他对游乐园进行了更好的改造。由此可知,划线句是说这次拒绝为迪士尼提供了一个重新考虑计划的有利机会。故选D。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒第二段“After the madness of opening day, Disney and his new park were criticized in the press. The media predicted a quick and early end. But the public didn't listen. Visitors arrived in large groups, and within weeks Disneyland was a success.(在疯狂的开放日之后,迪士尼和他的新乐园受到了媒体的批评。媒体预测这场战争将很快结束。但是公众并没有听从。大批游客蜂拥而至,几周之内,迪斯尼乐园就大获成功)”可知,尽管受到批评,但人们对它的热情却与日俱增。故选C。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“But Disney's story actually started two decades earlier with what Walt Disney called‘Daddy's Day’.(但迪士尼的故事实际上开始于20年前沃尔特·迪士尼所谓的‘爸爸节’)”可知,文章主要是讲迪士尼乐园的开始。故选A。 D The joy of giving is real, according to a study. A 13. D 14. C 15. 根据第一段“The joy of giving is real, according to a study. Research presented in the Journal of the Association for Psychological Science shows that those who give gifts are happier — and happier for longer — than those who receive gifts. (根据一项研究,给予的快乐是真实的。《心理科学协会杂志》上发表的研究表明,送礼的人比收礼的人更快乐,而且快乐持续的时间更长。)”可知,本段通过引出研究结论和相关期刊,点明了“给予带来快乐”这一核心话题,起到了引入文章主题的作用。故选A。 根据第二段“In one, participants were given $5 every day for five days and were required to spend the money on the same thing each day. Some participants were required to spend the money on themselves, while others were required to give to make a donation to charity. In a second experiment that was done online, participants played 10 rounds of a word puzzle game and each won 5 cents per round, which they could keep or donate. 根据第四段划线词后文“When people focus on an action, they may focus less on comparison and instead experience each act of giving as a unique happiness-inducing event. 根据第一段“Research presented in the Journal of the Association for Psychological Science shows that those who give gifts are happier — and happier for longer — than those who receive gifts. (《心理科学协会杂志》上发表的研究表明,送礼的人比收礼的人更快乐,而且快乐持续的时间更长。)”可知,送礼比收礼带来更长久的快乐就是新研究的主要发现。故选A。 If you are like most international students, you are probably pretty comfortable reading and writing in English. ____16____ Below are some tips to help you to improve your conversational skills. Compared with staying ②. can make a more meaningful difference 【解析】 【详解】 考查过去分词以及动词短语。 相比”常用Compared with结构,这里with是介词,后接动词-ing 形式,“待在家里”是stay at home,所以用staying;第二个空,“对……产生影响”是make a difference to,“更加有意义的”用比较级more meaningful修饰difference,故填Compared with staying; can make a more meaningful difference。 62. (it 形式主语) _______ under great stress. It is amazing that he doesn’t lose heart 【解析】 【详解】考查it作形式主语、主语从句。 It is amazing that he doesn’t lose heart。 63. (强调句型) _______ he _______ his classmates. It is because of his confidence that ②. left/made a good impression on 【解析】 【详解】考查强调句和短语。 留下好印象”常用短语leave/make a good impression on,用一般过去时表示过去发生的事情。故填①It is because of his confidence that;②left/made a good impression on。 64. 我发现他正在集中精力做作业,所以我们最好不要打扰他(find+宾语+宾补) I ________ his homework, so we had better ________. 【答案】 ①. found him concentrating on ②. leave him alone 【解析】 【详解】考查时态,固定短语和“find+宾语+宾补”结构。 “不要打扰他”是leave him alone, had better do意为“最好做某事”,因此leave用原形,故填found him concentrating on,leave him alone。 65. (定语从句) _______ the team captain recognizes _______ for the team. The athlete who was recommended as ②. the importance of being responsible 【解析】 【详解】考查定语从句和固定搭配、非谓语动词。 The athlete who was recommended as;第二个空表示“对……负责的重要性”,表示“……的重要性”用the importance of,表示“对……负责”用be responsible for,且the importance of中of是介词,用动名词形式being,作宾语,所以第二空填the importance of being responsible。故填①The athlete who was recommended as;②the importance of being responsible。 Dear Mike, ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Mike, I’m really concerned about your health as you’ve been suffering from frequent illnesses.
