B NeSmith and Maxwell are long-time residents (居民) of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, and they have known each other for almost 50 years. In 2021, Maxwell called NeSmith to let him know that because of health problems, he would be closing his weekly newspaper, The Oglethorpe Echo. NeSmith decided to prevent the nearly 150-year-old local newspaper from being forgotten. NeSmith remembered waking up at 6 a. m. after that phone call, He jumped into his truck and drove to The Echo offices. Upon arriving, he suggested that his friend think of a new solution. “Well, what are we going to do?” Maxwell asked him. “Are you going to buy the newspaper?” NeSmith looked up, searching for an answer, Then, a sudden idea hit him. He would create an organization and Maxwell would donate The Echo to it. After leaving the office, NeSmith called Charles Davis, director of the University of Georgia’s Grady College. “I’ve got an idea,” NeSmith told him. “I want to turn The Echo into a real-life experience for students at Grady College who want to be reporters.” Davis loved the idea, and he and NeSmith developed a course with The Echo as its foundation. Students could experience a working newsroom which would act as a stepping stone into their careers. Of course, they needed someone to run the newspaper. Then Andy Johnston, who had been teaching at Grady for a month, appeared, “I believe in the project. We’ve heard about other newspapers closing, especially in rural counties,” Johnston said, “When that happens, it means their only source of news and the only thing that holds people together is closing.” Johnston teamed up with Amanda Bright, who taught the course. Bright, a community reporter, helped create new digital platforms for The Echo, including an email newsletter and a website. The Echo also ran on a team of 12 volunteers that worked at the main office. The reason The Echo was able to continue is that everyone worked together—the students, Grady College, NeSmith, Maxwell, and the residents of Oglethorpe County. 24. (改编) Why did Maxwell make the phone call to NeSmith in 2021? A. To invite him to contribute articles to The Echo. B. To seek advice on how to improve his health condition. C. To remind him of the long history of Oglethorpe County. D. To inform him of the plan to shut down the weekly newspaper. 25. What may students at Grady College get from The Echo? A. Skills for running newspapers. B. Work experience as a reporter. C. Donations to continue their education. D. Chances to study famous newspapers. 26. Why does Johnston place importance on The Echo? A. It has a long history. B. It offers fun to natives. C. It unites the local people. D. It is owned by his family. 27. (原创) What does the author intend to tell readers through the story of The Echo? A. Friendship is the most valuable treasure in life. B. A community can join hands to keep local culture alive. C. University students should take more responsibility for news. D. Old newspapers are more valuable than modern digital ones. C It’s not just humans who get wiser as they age-animals do too, according to a growing body of research. Age is not just a number: as animals get older, they behave differently depending on their life experiences, gain richer knowledge of their environment, and often pass it on to younger members of their group, researchers say. Previous research on aging focused on negative health aspects, says researcher Keller Kopf, an ecologist at Charles Darwin University in Australia. “That idea about old individuals not being important for populations, or for environments, is really not the full story,” he says. The more he examined different groups of animals, the more he found remarkable examples showing the value of older creatures. Primates (灵长目动物), whales, elephants and pack-hunting animals all have old individuals who carry vital cultural knowledge and maintain social structures, according to Kopf’s research. Older female elephants, for example, have a “social memory” of who is a friend or enemy, and are more aware of potential (潜在的) dangers such as listening out for lions. Kopf’s paper talks about the importance of “cultural transmission” that not only recognises that animals have culture, but that these individuals deliver their social learning to other individuals. Older individuals tend to have gathered the most knowledge. On a more personal level, the discovery of the importance of older animals made Kopf think more about our own species. “It has made me think a lot more about how we don’t value older people in our society. Many people of advanced ages are forgotten about,” he says. This is a loss not only for the old people themselves, but for all of human society, he says. “What is that doing for the modern world?” 28. (改编) According to the first paragraph, what happens to animals as they grow older? A. They leave little experience. B. They pass food to the young. C. They always behave the same. D. They become more intelligent. 29. Why is previous research mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. To introduce the negative health aspects. B. To stress the uniqueness of Kopf’s study. C. To identify potential dangers of being old. D. To recognise the value of the past research. 30. What does the underlined phrase “cultural transmission” probably mean? A. Spreading knowledge and experience. B. Maintaining social structures effectively. C. Exchanging individual cultural knowledge. D. Discovering life experiences independently. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Animals Deserve Kindness. B. Age Defines Everything. C. Youth Holds the Key. D. Wisdom Comes with Age. D Picture this, you win two tickets to a sold-out concert and eagerly text to ask your friends if they’d like to join. There comes their response “Maybe.” Your mood immediately turns, for you need to wait for their decisions before you can figure out your plans for the concert. If you’ve experienced anything like the above anecdote (趣闻), you’re not alone. People responding “maybe” to invitations is a common yet annoying aspect of social life. What goes on in people’s heads when they aren’t sure whether to accept an invitation? Social invitations can be a delicate dance. People often misread what someone extending an invitation wants to hear and overestimate an inviter’s likelihood of preferring a “maybe” over a “no.” Moreover, they fail to realize how much more disrespected people feel when they receive a “maybe” in response to their invitation. Naturally, we wanted to figure out why this awkward dynamic plays out. We found that it’s largely due to something called “motivated reasoning.” Motivated reasoning occurs when a person interprets information in a biased (有偏差的) way to suit their own wishes. In other words, invitees convince themselves that inviters want to hear “maybe” instead of “no” because a “maybe” is better for the invitees, allowing them to leave their options open. Besides, people tend to overestimate the negative consequences of saying “no” to invitations, thinking it will upset, anger, and disappoint inviters. However, there were certain situations that made people more comfortable saying “no” to an invitation. When recipients of an invitation put themselves in the shoes of the person extending the invitation, they are more likely to realize that they’d probably prefer a definite answer. When the participants get invited to do something they didn’t want to do, they had no desire to keep their options open. The motivated reasoning then became irrelevant. While navigating social situations can be tricky, being direct and definite is sometimes best. It might reduce your options. But it’ll keep those who invite you from being left uncertain and maybe they will still think of you when the next concert comes to town. 32. Why is the concert anecdote mentioned at the beginning? A. To explain the background of the invitation. B. To stress the importance of quick replies. C. To encourage immediate decision-making. D. To introduce a common social situation. 33. (改编) What mainly causes people to reply “maybe” to an invitation? A. They interpret the situation in a one-sided way for their own good. B. They understand the inviter’s real expectations correctly. C. They care less about the possible harm to the inviter’s feelings. D. They expect to build more harmonious relationships with others. 34. What is the author’s suggestion in the last paragraph? A. Keeping your options open for better plans. B. Accepting invitations to maintain friendships. C. Prioritizing clear response over open options. D. Thinking twice before refusing an invitation. 35. What’s the passage’s main purpose? A. To explore why people say “maybe” and advocate clear replies. B. To explain the hidden consequences of “maybe” in social invitations. C. To discuss the awkwardness of uncertain replies and share advice. D. To keep options open by changing replies from “no” to “maybe”. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We go on vacation to escape from the demands of reality. The look on my face must have indicated that I didn’t understand the question. She asked again. “Your red dress...Why are you wearing it? Today is a blue-dress day.” I rarely noticed what other people wore, so it never occurred to me that anyone would notice I had only two school dresses: a red dress with little yellow flowers and a blue one. The red dress was my favorite, so I wore it on Mondays and Tuesdays, the blue one on Wednesdays and Thursdays, then back to red each Friday. “Oh,” I stammered (结结巴巴地说). “I dropped chili on it yesterday. I, uh, can’t wear it until Mama washes it.” There was no judgment in Sherry’s question, just curiosity. For the first time in my life, though, I wondered, “Do my friends feel sorry for me? Am I poor?” After school, I hung my red dress in the closet I shared with my sister and went outside to sulk (生闷气). I climbed to the lowest branch of an oak tree and stared at my tiny house. My mother had bought it six months earlier, shortly after my father died from a heart attack. I made friends in our new town and visited their homes. Sherry lived in a brand-new house with a piano in her living room; another friend’s huge old house had more rooms than I could count. Still, my friends preferred coming to my house probably because they were crazy about my mom, who baked chocolate cakes or buttered biscuits, played board games with us after supper, and read books in her soft voice. Their parents were nice but never played with us. I’d never compared my clothes, my little house, or my life with anyone else’s until that day. Mom called through the screen door for me to set the table. I climbed down and shuffled into the kitchen. She was mashing potatoes in a big bowl. I reached for dinner plates, asking softly, “Mama, are we poor?” 注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I thought my question might make her feel bad. Instead, she asked, “What do you mean by ‘poor?’” __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ A few minutes later, I settled at the table with the new book mom bought for me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 1.【答案】B 【原文】M: Hi, Lisa, are you free to help with the school open day tomorrow afternoon? W: That sounds promising, but I worry about the longer travel time if we move farther from the city center. M: Most of the places I saw are close to public transport. W: What about our kids? New schools? M: I looked into that as well. The nearby schools actually have newer facilities and smaller class sizes. W: That’s amazing, but moving means a lot of extra work and unexpected costs. This change is meant to save time, especially during busy hours. In addition, the center has added several indoor spaces for different needs. If you prefer calm exercise, there is a stretching room on the second floor. For group activities, the large hall near the entrance is available throughout the day. Free Internet access is provided in all rest areas. Finally, we now offer weekly guided fitness sessions led by trained coaches. It is my great honor to deliver a speech here on behalf of my class, talking about the importance of living a green life. Living a green life means making full use of the recyclable resources, reducing carbon emission and making our planet a sustainable and habitable place for us to live. “Green life” is not just a slogan, but a lifestyle we should follow strictly. First, keep in mind that reducing food waste is important. It is also a must to make the best of resources. Additionally, develop the habit of taking public transport to cut carbon emission. Let’s embrace green life wholeheartedly. Individuals can make a great difference. Let’s make joint efforts to live a green life. Thanks for your listening! 范文二 Good morning. It is a great honor to stand here and speak on the theme “Live a Green Life.” Our planet is facing unprecedented challenges: climate change, resource losses, and environmental pollution. Living a green life is an urgent responsibility we should take. It signifies a conscious commitment to sustainability, aiming to protect our resources. The path to a green life is paved with practical, daily actions. Firstly, we can embrace sustainable transportation. Choosing public transport instead of private cars significantly cuts carbon emissions. Secondly, advocating thrift 节约 is crucial. Simple habits like turning off unused lights, using water wisely, and minimizing food waste conserve precious resources. Thirdly, proper waste management through sorting and recycling transforms trash into valuable resources. Every single action, no matter how small, contributes to a larger change. Therefore, I call upon each of you to become an active participant in this vital movement. Together, our small steps will create a healthier, greener, and more beautiful world for all. Thank you for listening. 读后续写参考答案: 范文一: I thought my question might make her feel bad. Instead, she asked, “What do you mean by ‘poor?’” She put down the bowl, turned to me, and wiped my cheek gently. I told her about Sherry’s question and my worry about being poor. She smiled warmly and said, “Poor is not about having few clothes or a small house, but about lacking love and warmth.” She added that we had each other, and my friends loved coming to our house because of the happiness here. Her words melted my anxiety, and I felt a warm feeling in my heart. A few minutes later, I settled at the table with the new book mom bought for me. I stroked the cover gently, recalling her words and the happy moments with her and my friends. I suddenly realized that I was never poor. The love from mom, the friendship from my classmates, and the warmth of our small home were the most precious wealth. I raised my head, smiled at mom, and knew I should cherish what I had. From then on, I no longer felt inferior and became confident to accept my life. 范文二: I thought my question might make her feel bad. Instead, she asked, “What do you mean by ‘poor?’” I hesitated, then explained about Sherry’s question and the red dress. Mom set down the potato masher and wiped her hands on her apron. “Poor isn’t about dresses, sweetheart,” she said gently. “Poor is when you have no one to love you, no dreams to chase, no hope in your heart.” She took my face in her flour-dusted hands. “We have a roof that keeps us dry, food that fills our bellies, and most importantly, we have each other. Your friends don’t come here for our house—they come because this home is full of laughter and warmth.” She hugged me tight. “You’re richer than you know.” A few minutes later, I settled at the table with the new book mom bought for me. It was a worn copy of Little Women, but to me, it felt like treasure. As I turned the pages, I realized the March sisters weren’t wealthy either, yet they lived with such grace and kindness. I thought of Mom baking cakes with the little we had, of her reading to us by lamplight, of the way she made every guest feel like family. The next morning, I wore my blue dress proudly. When Sherry complimented it, I smiled and said. “Thanks! My mom says colors don’t matter—it’s the person inside that counts.” And for the first time, I truly believed it. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
