When I was 16, I got a summer job at a local café called Sunny Corner. It was a warm and nice place with wooden tables, soft music, and the smell of fresh coffee everywhere. It was my first part-time job, so I felt nervous but excited. I practiced simple things like folding napkins at home for days, but I still worried about making mistakes.
On my first day, I had trouble with a few orders and almost dropped a tray of cups. Then, a bad thing happened: I spilled (洒出) a hot cup of coffee on a customer’s white shirt. I felt so embarrassed that my face turned red. I said “sorry” over and over, afraid he would be angry. But he just smiled and said, “Don’t worry. It happens to everyone. Once I spilled coffee on my own boss!” His kindness made me feel better, and I decided to work harder.
During that summer, I tried my best to learn. I remembered the menu well, practiced making coffee until I did it right, and learned to write down customers’ requests to avoid mistakes. Talking to customers also became easier. I made friends with my coworkers too. The manager Mia taught me to stay calm when the café was busy, and my classmate Jake told me how to balance work and summer homework.
There was an old regular customer named Mr. Harris. He came every morning for black coffee and lemon cake. We often talked during my breaks. He used to be a teacher, and when I told him I didn’t know if I should choose art or science classes, he said, “Follow what you like. It’s more important than being afraid of failing.” His words helped me a lot.
By the end of the summer, I was not the nervous girl I used to be. I became more confident and responsible. This job taught me that mistakes are part of learning. It was more than just a job — it was a great lesson for my life.

Li Haorong, a 17-year-old student from Beijing, reached the summit of Mount Qomolangma, the world’s highest peak in the Xizang autonomous region on May 25, 2025, becoming the youngest Chinese male to climb the summit from its northern slope. Beyond mountaineering, he is also keen on other sports like basketball, skiing and surfing, thus contributing to his active and open-minded way of thinking.
As a member of the Youmei Youth Mountaineering Team, the world’s first youth team to climb Qomolangma, Li began his mountaineering journey in January 2023. He said the sport has taught him valuable life lessons, the most important of which is “to have a heart of awe”. After returning to base camp, Li kowtowed (叩头) three times to Qomolangma to express his gratitude for a safe climb and for all the lessons it had taught him.
Li Jinghui, the team leader and CEO of Youmei Camp, said the journey took 46 days. After arriving at base camp, the team carried out progressive high-altitude adaptive training, climbing from 5,200 meters to 7,028 meters at Camp1. “This strict training involved walking through real snow and ice environments, practicing crevasse (冰缝) crossing and other high-altitude skills,” he said.
Lobsang Dondrub, an experienced mountaineering guide, told China Daily that spring weather on the mountain remains unstable and risky. He noted that teenagers are generally discouraged from attempting the summit because their developing bodies are less able to deal with the challenges of high-altitude climbing. However, he praised Li Haorong’s performance in particular. “He braved various challenges, such as the crevasses of the Rongbuk Glacier, the steep ice walls of the North Col and the oxygen-deprived (缺氧的) ‘death zone’ above 8,000 meters,” he said.

A new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) shows that global animal populations have dropped greatly since 1970. The report is based on information about 5495 different species of animals around the world. The information was collected by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), which used it to create what it calls the “Living Planet Index” (LPI). The LPI focuses on vertebrates — animals with backbones, such as birds, fish, and mammals. The LPI report shows that between 1970 and 2020, the average size of these populations dropped by 73%.
The LPI can be a little perplexing. It doesn’t show the change in the total number of animals on the planet. Instead, it shows the average change in the size of animal populations since 1970. For example, if one species dropped from 1,000 animals to 500, that’s a 50% drop. If another species dropped from 100,000 to 50,000, that’s also a 50% drop. The number of animals lost in the second population is much higher, but they would both count as a 50% drop for the LPI. But even if the numbers aren’t perfect, scientists agree that animal populations are dropping. And that’s a serious problem.
The report shows that populations have dropped in all kinds of habitats (栖息地). Freshwater habitats such as rivers and lakes, saw the biggest drop, averaging 85%, followed by land animals at 69%. In the oceans, the drop was56%. Geographically, Latin America experienced the greatest loss at 95%, while Africa’s animal populations fell by 76%, and Asia and the Pacific by 60%. Europe and North America had smaller drops, but they still saw a 33% drop since then.
Human activities, including habitat destruction, farming, climate change, pollution, and over- hunting, are the primary cause. The WWF calls for urgent action to protect Earth’s wildlife, recommending that 30% of the world’s land, oceans, and freshwater be protected by 2030 and that humans change how they eat, farm, and produce energy.
12. What does the LPI report show?
A. The total number of animals on Earth.
B. The habitats of different endangered animals.
C. The average change in animal population sizes.
D. The number of species that have already died out.
13. What does the underlined word “perplexing” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Simple. B. Confusing.
C. Exciting. D. Important.
14. Based on the report, which region saw the largest average drop in animal populations?
A. Europe. B. Latin America.
C. North America. D. Asia and the Pacific.
15. What recommendation does the WWF make to protect wildlife?
A. Developing new farming technologies.
B. Increasing the number of zoos worldwide.
C. Introducing new animal species to endangered areas.
D. Caring for the world’s land, oceans, and freshwater.

Ten-year-old Josh came from a poor family. His mother was a part-time cleaner and his father fixed small appliances for his neighbors. Though the family’s clothes were faded and patched (打补丁的), and the rent was a constant worry at the end of the month, Josh’s parents always taught him that honesty cost nothing but was worth everything.
One afternoon, Josh walked his bike to old Mr. Black’s repair shop. The chain was broken again, and Mr. Black, who was familiar with their struggles — charged only two dollars for the repair. Before Josh left, Mr. Black warned that the frame was nearly worn out. Josh thanked him and promised to ride carefully.
On the way home, Josh discovered something at the bus stop — a thick envelope half-buried in snow. He picked it up and took a look inside. His eyes widened. It was full of cash, more money than he’d ever seen: Hundreds of dollars, maybe thousands.
His first thought was about his mother’s worn-out shoes and the rent that was due. He could slip the envelope into his jacket, and no one would know. But then he remembered his father’s words: “We might be poor, Josh, but we must be honest.” His heart raced as he weighed the wrong that was easy against the right that was hard. Then he sat down on the frozen bench, holding the envelope tightly, and waited.
An hour passed, then two. Josh’s toes grew numb (麻木的) as the setting sun painted the sky orange and pink. Occasionally, strangers walked by, eyeing him curiously, but he just held the envelope tighter. A woman asked if he was okay, but he simply shook his head and stayed put. His nose was red from cold, and he shivered uncontrollably, but he didn’t move. Finally, just as Josh began to worry about his parents’ concern, a black car stopped. Then a man named Eason in a suit jumped out, urgently scanning (察看) the ground.

Josh stood and asked if the man was searching for something.

A new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) shows that global animal populations have dropped greatly since 1970. The report is based on information about 5,495 different species of animals around the world.
Freshwater habitats, such as rivers and lakes, saw the biggest drop, averaging 85%, followed by land animals at 69%.
C 13. B 14. B 15. D
由文章第一段中“The LPI focuses on vertebrates — animals with backbones, such as birds, fish, and mammals. The LPI report shows that between 1970 and 2020, the average size of these populations dropped by 73%. (LPI主要研究脊椎动物——有脊椎的动物,如鸟类、鱼类和哺乳动物。LPI的报告显示,从1970年到2020年,这些种群的平均规模下降了73%。)”可知,LPI报告显示了动物种群大小的平均变化。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第二段中“It doesn’t show the change in the total number of animals on the planet. Instead, it shows the average change in the size of animal populations since 1970. (它没有显示地球上动物总数的变化。相反,它显示了自1970年以来动物种群规模的平均变化。)”可知,LPI并不显示地球上动物总数的变化,而是显示自1970年以来动物种群大小的平均变化,因此LPI可能有点令人困惑。故perplexing在此处的意思是“令人困惑的”。A.
由文章第三段中“Geographically, Latin America experienced the greatest loss at 95%, while Africa’s animal populations fell by 76%, and Asia and the Pacific by 60%. (从地理上看,拉丁美洲的动物数量减少最多,达95%,而非洲的动物数量减少了76%,亚洲和太平洋地区减少了60%。)”可知,拉丁美洲的动物种群数量平均下降幅度最大。故选B。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段中“The WWF calls for urgent action to protect Earth’s wildlife, recommending that 30% of the world’s land, oceans, and freshwater be protected by 2030 and that humans change how they eat, farm, and produce energy. (WWF呼吁采取紧急行动保护地球上的野生动物,建议到2030年保护世界上30%的土地、海洋和淡水,并建议人类改变饮食、耕作和生产能源的方式。)”可知,WWF建议保护世界的土地、海洋和淡水。故选D。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了保护野生动物的生存环境的方法。
【16题详解】
上文“One of the easiest and most effective ways to help wildlife is to protect the environment in which the animals live.(帮助野生动物最简单、最有效的方法之一是保护动物生活的环境)”说明保护动物生存的环境是帮助野生动物最简单有效的方法之一。
Manufacturing consumer products uses energy and natural resources, and creates waste and pollution. When we consume less, we need fewer natural resources and produce less waste.(减少。制造消费品会消耗能源和自然资源,并造成浪费和污染。当我们消耗更少时,我们需要更少的自然资源,产生更少的废物)”说明减少消费可以节省自然资源并减少废物。空处承接上文,提出减少使用一次性塑料制品的建议,进一步说明减少消费的具体方法。G项中的“Reduce your use of single-use plastics”和上文的Reduce相呼应,所以G项“减少使用难以回收且在环境中存在数十年的一次性塑料。”符合语境。故选G。
【18题详解】
上文“Reuse(重新使用)”以及下文“If you have unwanted books, toys, clothes or other items in good condition, consider giving them to charity instead of throwing them in the trash.(如果你有不需要的书、玩具、衣服或其他完好无损的物品,可以考虑把它们捐给慈善机构,而不是扔进垃圾桶)”说明本段落主题是重复使用物品。

下文“You should keep a safe distance away, do not approach them, and not remove them from their environment. If you encounter an injured wild animal, contact an animal rescuer in your area.(你应该与它们保持安全距离,不要靠近它们,也不要将它们从环境中移除。如果你遇到受伤的野生动物,请联系你所在地区的动物救援人员)”说明与野生动物的相处方法,空处应与野生动物有关。所以A项“尊重野生动物。”适合作本段的主旨句。故选A。

Getting to Know the Intangible Cultural Heritage Around Us
Last weekend, our school held a special workshop called “Exploring Our Intangible Cultural Heritage.” We invited a well-known local paper-cutting artist to teach us about this beautiful craft.
First, we watched as he turned simple red paper into lovely shapes using only scissors. Then, with his help, we all tried making our own paper art. It was not easy, but everyone enjoyed the hands-on practice.
Through this experience, we learned to appreciate the art more and felt more connected to our own culture. We realized that to keep traditions alive, we must try them ourselves and understand their value.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Josh stood and asked if the man was searching for something.

The next morning, Eason visited Josh’s house with a brand-new bicycle.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Josh stood and asked if the man was searching for something. The man rushed over, explaining it was his workers’ payroll — eight hundred dollars. When Josh held out the envelope, the man collapsed in relief, and then he looked at the boy in wonder. Noticing Josh’s worn-out bicycle and thin coat, he insisted on driving him home. Although Josh politely refused, the man was firm because he was unwilling to let this honest child ride through the darkness and cold. During the short ride, Eason learned about the family’s struggles.
The next morning, Eason visited Josh’s house with a brand-new bicycle. He told Josh’s parents how their son’s honesty had saved his workers and his business. Josh’s mother wiped her tears while his father stood tall. Eason explained that this gift wasn’t out of pity, but out of respect for their values. Greatly moved, they finally accepted the gift. Eason also offered Josh’s father a stable job at his factory. This simple act would put an end to their rent worries, proving that honesty, even in poverty, sows the seeds of change.
