Ever wonder why we need the past continuous tense? Why can't we just use the simple past tense? And why does english have to always be so complicated? First, let's consider the following situation. I called you last night, but you didn't answer the phone. Why I, i'm sorry, I didn't hear the phone ring. I was taking a shower when you called. In this scenario, you must use the past continuous tense. You cannot use the simple past tense. And IT is wrong to say, I took a shower when you called, but why? Well, to really understand why, we must first understand a little more about the past continuous tense. The past continuous tense, also called the past progressive tense, is used to talk about an action that was happening at a specific time in the past. To make the past continuous tense, we use was or war, and the g form of the verb IT looks like this.
