When I was a little girl, my mum used to say I would read the back of a medicine bottle if I didn’t have a book in my hand. It was true, and even now that reading habit has been with me. I’m talking about real books, books made out of paper, books that you can hold in your hand, to read, at the table, on the subway or my favorite place to read in the bath.
But the number of people reading books is dropping. A recent survey tells us that Chinese people only read 4.77 printed books a year on average and in the US, 25 percent of the population say they didn’t read a book last year! So what’s stopping people from reading?
The answer of course is the huge influence that technology has had on our life. Why read a book when you can watch a movie or TV play on your smartphones or iPads? For younger people, books may not be as exciting as online games. With stories you have to work at it, closely follow the turns of the plot. There are no shortcuts with a book. You have to turn page after page.
But you can still get lost in a book. We all have this thing called imagination. It’s much more powerful than any computer; in fact, it’s worth remembering that any online game was first written in words as a story by its writer.
So we need to read-if we do not read, it will be hard for us to improve our ability to think widely. Reading is a process in which we need to compare and connect other things we have read and seen in the past. If you do not read, this will not only influence your study, but also your social life in the future.
So why not follow me from now on? Run a hot bath, or find a comfortable chair and read a good book for a few hours-there are quite many, for free, in your local library.
11. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A. The writer used to enjoy playing with a medicine bottle.
B. The writer has had the reading habit since her childhood.
C. The writer always has two or three books in her hand.
D. The writer often reads books at a table on the subway.
12. Why is the number of people reading books dropping?
A. Books are becoming less interesting.
B. Technology has greatly influenced our life.
C. 25% of Americans don’t read books.
D. There aren’t enough printed books to read.
13. What does the word “shortcuts” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean in Chinese?
A. 捷径 B. 理念 C. 缺点 D. 短文
14. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Reading can help to develop our imagination.
B. All online games were first written in words.
C. We need to think a lot while reading a book.
D. Younger people prefer books to online games.
15. In the last paragraph, the writer mainly suggests that we should ________.
A. run a hot bath to read books
B. borrow books from the library
C. read more books in our life
D. read books in a comfortable chair
D
We usually learn new things for amusement and professional development. No matter what the purpose of learning is, you should take effort to learn something new every day. Only a few of us are lifelong learners, but most people are busy with their habitual everyday routines (日常工作) and activities. However, learning something new daily offers great benefits(好处) and possibilities. You can find learning chances everywhere these days, so incorporate (吸收) a habit of learning something new into your daily routine and improve your life with fresh ideas, new people and inspiration.
New information promotes (促进) self-improvement and personal growth. Successful people say that personal growth is the key to their achievements; that’s why they are never satisfied with what they’ve already learned. When we learn something new, we get new experience and skills. It means we deepen our understanding of the world and unleash (释放) our hidden talent. Moreover, learning new things will make you proud and increase your self-confidence.
I was always too busy to add an additional point to my daily schedule. That’s the main reason why I never had enough time to read and learn new things for my hobbies. However, I’ve learnt that having one more task on my to-do list is the best way to structure my daily routine and improve my time perception (观念). I’ve realized I should manage time wisely. Stop complaining that you don’t have free time to read. Learn to use your time more efficiently so that you can do things you want to do.
I realize that I’ve met most of my friends while learning new things and getting new experiences. When you join an organization or a club, you are surrounded by like-minded people and just uncommon characters. Chances are you’ll find close friends among them.
Develop a habit of learning something new each day and you’ll be sorry you didn’t. It can improve the quality of your life and helpe you both professionally and personally. Do you think learning something new daily is important?
16. What can make our life rich according to Paragraph 1?
A. Daily routines. B. Everyday activities.
C. New inspiration. D. Learning chances.
17. What does the underlined word “It” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. Looking for the key to their achievements.
B. Getting new experience and skills.
C. Making us proud.
D. Increasing our self-confidence.
18. We can infer from the passage that the writer ________.
A. is always busy with her habitual everyday routines
B. believed her personal growth was the key to her achievements
C. has probably added a reading task on her list to-do
D. believes that new people should be introduced by old ones.
19. The passage tells the following benefits of learning something new daily except ________.

【解析】
【导语】本文是记叙文,主要讲述作者一岁时抓周,没有选择钢笔、钱或玩具,而是扑进父亲怀里,这是第一次也是唯一一次让父亲落泪的故事。
【1题详解】
第三段第一句“...he put a pen, a piece of paper money and a toy in front of me.”,父亲准备了钢笔、纸币、玩具这三样物品供选择,所以是“三个”选择。
【2题详解】
第三段“For example, if the kid takes the pen, it means he or she will be an intelligent person in the future.”,如果孩子选择钢笔,意味着将来会是“聪明的”人。
【3题详解】
倒数第二段第二句“Then I pushed everything aside and went right into his arms.”,作者推开了所有物品,直接扑进父亲怀里,所以最终选择了“父亲”。
【4题详解】

A. 捷径 B. 理念 C. 缺点 D. 短文

B. All online games were first written in words.

15. In the last paragraph, the writer mainly suggests that we should ________.
A. run a hot bath to read books
B. borrow books from the library
C. read more books in our life
D. read books in a comfortable chair

【答案】例文:
Persistence Is Key
Persistence is the key to overcoming difficulties. Last month, I took part in a 1,000-meter race. After the first 600 meters, I felt extremely exhausted and wanted to give up. However, I told myself to keep going. Finally, I crossed the finish line.
Through this experience, I realize that persistence means keeping up our efforts even in the face of failure. As the saying goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” Perseverance helps us turn dreams into reality.
I have some suggestions for you. First, set small goals to build confidence. Second, always stay positive when facing challenges. In short, never give up, and success will find you.
