Animal-assisted therapy has become increasingly popular across the world in recent years. This special healing way uses the tender(亲密的) bond between humans and animals to help people relieve emotional stress and ease bodily aches. Unlike common household pets, therapy animals must get professional training. They are taught to stay calm and mild(温和的) in all kinds of situations and to react(作出反应) to people’s feelings in a warm and gentle way. Dogs and cats are the most common therapy animals, and sometimes small animals like rabbits and parrots are also chosen to bring comfort to people in need.
Therapy animals play an irreplaceable role in comforting different groups of people. In hospitals, therapy dogs visit sick children and elderly patients every single day. They let kids stroke their fluffy(毛茸茸的) fur and interact with them, which makes the children put aside the pain from their sickness for a while. For the lonely elderly in nursing homes, therapy cats can sit beside them quietly. The soft purr(呼噜声) and warm body of the cats can drive away their loneliness and make them feel peaceful. Besides, therapy animals also help people with heavy mental pressure. Many office workers and students feel much more relaxed after spending just a few minutes playing with these lovely therapy animals.
Training a qualified therapy animal is far from an easy thing. It usually takes several months to train an animal to meet the professional standard. Trainers need to teach them to keep calm among noisy crowds and not to leap on people without warning. They also need to guide the animals to respond to people’s sad or anxious emotions in a proper way. But all the hard work of the trainers is worthwhile. Every time a therapy animal brings a smile to a sad person’s face, it shows the magical power of the friendship between humans and animals. The domestication(驯化) of wild animals is a long process that started thousands of years ago, and it has changed human life in a great way forever. It all began with wolves, the ancestors of modern dogs. About 15,000 to 23,000 years ago in Asia, wolves began to follow human hunters because they wanted to eat the meat left by humans after hunting. Humans found that some wolves were friendly and could help them hunt for food and guard their homes. They started to raise these wolves, and after thousands of years of selective breeding(选择性繁殖), wild wolves gradually turned into loyal dogs that live with humans.
Sheep were among the first farm animals to be domesticated, around 13,000 years ago in West Asia. Sheep are small and mild-tempered(性情温和的), and they live in groups, which makes them easy for humans to raise and manage. At first, humans raised sheep mainly for their meat, and later they discovered that sheep’s wool could be made into warm clothes. This made sheep even more important in human life, especially in cold regions.
Cows evolved(进化) from a kind of wild ox called aurochs(古代野牛), which used to live in Europe and Asia. Humans in West Asia began to domesticate aurochs after 8000 BCE. Aurochs were strong and could help with farm work in the fields, and they also supplied humans with milk and meat. As time went by, humans chose to raise aurochs with gentle characters, and these wild oxen slowly became the common cows we see now.
These domesticated animals made human life much easier by providing food and daily materials and offering help with all kinds of work. Without these animals, human civilization(文明) would not have developed so rapidly.

A. About thirteen thousand years ago B. 15,000 to 23,000 years ago
C. Before 8000 BCE D. About eight thousand years ago
28. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Cows were domesticated earlier than sheep .
B. Wolves were domesticated for their gentle nature.
C. Humans initially kept sheep for meat.
D. Aurochs still exist in Europe and Asia now.

Bees are amazing small creatures that play an extremely important role in nature and human life. They live in large groups called colonies, and each colony has three types of bees including a queen bee, drones and worker bees. The queen bee is the largest bee in the colony, and her only task is to lay eggs to ensure the survival of the colony. Drones are male bees, and their main job is to mate(交配) with the queen bee. Most of the bees in a colony are worker bees that are female bees doing all the hard and tiring work for the colony.
Worker bees have a variety of jobs. These jobs include cleaning the colony regularly, taking care of the young bees, collecting nectar(花蜜) and pollen from flowers, and making honey for the colony. They fly from one flower to another every day, and in this process, they carry pollen from one flower to another, which helps plants grow and produce fruit. Without bees, many plants would not be able to reproduce, and this would break the food chain in nature and cause serious problems.
Bees make honey to feed the whole colony, especially in winter when there are no flowers to collect nectar from. Humans have collected honey from bees for thousands of years, and honey is not only a delicious sweet food but also has many practical uses in daily life. Bees also produce beeswax, which can be used to make candles, cosmetics and many other daily products.
Sadly, a large number of bees are in danger now because of environmental pollution and the loss of their living places. Protecting bees is not just protecting a small kind of animal, but also protecting the balance of nature and our own food supply.
29. What is the only task of the queen bee in a colony?
A. To collect nectar from flowers
B. To mate with male bees in the colony
C. To produce eggs for the colony’s survival
D. To clean and protect the colony
30. Which kind of bees do most of the hard work in a bee colony?
A. Queen bees B. Male drones
C. Young bees D. Worker bees
31. Why are bees so important for the growth of plants?
A. They make honey to offer nutrition for plants.
B. They transport pollen and help plants breed.
C. They drive away dangerous animals from plants.
D. They provide beeswax to keep plants warm in winter.

The Warm Care for Wild Animals in the Forest
With the development of human society, the living space of wild animals in the forest is becoming smaller and smaller, and many of them are facing the danger of being short of food and getting hurt by human activities. To protect these lovely wild animals, a lot of forest rangers and volunteers have started a warm protection action in recent years, and they have done a lot of meaningful things for the wild animals.
The forest rangers patrol(巡逻) the forest every day. Their daily work includes checking the living areas of wild animals, removing the traps set by illegal hunters and clearing the garbage left by tourists in the forest, because this garbage may make wild animals sick if they eat it by mistake. When they find wild animals that are hurt or too young to live by themselves, they will take them to the forest animal rescue center nearby. At the rescue center, professional keepers will nurse these animals back to health with special food and medical care. When the animals are healthy enough and can survive in the wild on their own, the keepers will send them back to the forest where they belong.
Volunteers also play an important role in the protection action. They often go to nearby communities to give speeches about wild animal protection, telling people not to cut down trees randomly or hunt wild animals illegally. They also call on people to bring their garbage back when visiting the forest, and to contact the forest rangers at once if they find hurt wild animals or illegal hunting behaviors.
Thanks to the efforts of rangers and volunteers, the living environment of wild animals in the forest has become much better. More and more wild animals can live safely and freely in the forest, and the number of some rare wild animals is even increasing slowly. Protecting wild animals is protecting the nature we live in, and every small effort from humans can bring a warm change to the lives of wild animals.
46. What kind of danger are many forest wild animals facing now?
47. What do the forest rangers do in their daily forest patrol?
48. What will the keepers do when the hurt wild animals recover and can live independently?
49. What do the volunteers do to spread the idea of wild animal protection?

第三节 书面表达
My Special Animal Friend
I have a special animal friend, and it has been with me for two years. It is a lovely dog named Coco. She has soft white fur and two big, bright eyes that always shine with joy.
One rainy afternoon, I came home from school feeling sad because I didn’t do well in a test. As soon as I opened the door, Coco ran to me, wagging her tail. She didn’t make a sound but just leaned against my leg, looking up at me with her warm eyes. I hugged her tightly, and all my sadness seemed to disappear. She stayed by my side until I felt better.
To me, Coco is more than a pet; she is my true friend and family. She teaches me that love can be silent but powerful. I will always cherish the time we spend together.
