Each September, freshmen at Shaoxing University (USX) are invited by blue-vested students to join a long-standing volunteer tutoring program. For nearly 30 years, the program has provided free academic support to disadvantaged children, especially those with disabilities.
Launched by the university’s Youth Volunteer Association, the program aims to let students “give back to society through knowledge.” It has partnered with local public service teams and the disabled persons' federation, benefiting over 200 families and more than 700 children with nearly 1,500 volunteers contributing 27,000 service hours.
Volunteers come from various majors. Early childhood education major Wang Sihan tutors a girl with language delays, impressed by the child’s discipline and unique potential. Clinical medicine student Tian Xiangmei, selected for her patience, uses simple drawings to teach math to a cognitively challenged girl, as she understands the child’s situation as a former left-behind child. English education major Yang Xi applies classroom knowledge, making personalized flashcards and using praise to encourage her student, traveling 11 kilometers weekly for tutoring.
The program also fosters volunteers’ growth. Junior Yu Lingfei has become the program leader, with volunteers recording teaching experiences in a shared manual to help newcomers. Adapting to societal changes, the program now emphasizes mental health training. Volunteers also create a “heartfelt moments capsule” to record precious experiences, which are turned into gifts for children.
“Volunteering is mutual growth,” said Yang Yifan from USX. It allows students to step out of campus, understand society deeply, and turn their knowledge into practical help.
24. What is the main purpose of USX’s volunteer tutoring program?
A. To help freshmen expand their social circles.
B. To provide free academic help for disadvantaged children.
C. To enhance students’ academic performance in exams.
D. To promote cooperation between majors.
25. Why was Tian Xiangmei chosen as a volunteer tutor?
A. She is majoring in early childhood education.
B. She is patient and understands the child’s situation.
C. She has rich tutoring experience.
D. She is good at drawing pictures.
26. How does Yang Xi help her student learn better?
A. By using flashcards and positive praise.
B. By teaching difficult formulas.
C. By rereading passages repeatedly.
D. By talking about her university life.
27. What can we learn about the program?
A. It was started by local officials.
B. It only accepts education majors as volunteers.
C. It now pays more attention to mental health.
D. It has served over 1,500 children so far.

Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. They prefer to focus their energy on other things that improve their lives. Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.
First, it’s good for a child’s brain. Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school. Bilingual children also display a better facility in their native language. Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when. Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking.
Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language. Ben Mazor of Montreal speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, “Kids’ brains are like a sponge (海绵). They absorb everything. It comes to them so easily while they’re young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language?”
A number of studies show that bilingualism is valuable to the brain later in life. Scottish researchers did a study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11. They were tested again in their 70s. Researchers then compared the tests. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive (认知的) abilities. Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, “Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.”
So,who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language?
28. What does the underlined word “facility” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Ability. B. Interest. C. Taste. D. Method.
29. According to paragraph 3, what may parents like Ben Mazor do?
A. Learn foreign languages by themselves.
B. Spend more money on home schooling.
C. Involve kids in foreign language courses.
D. Help kids absorb knowledge like a sponge.
30. What has the Scottish researchers proved about bilingualism?
A. It extends one’s life. B. It improves test scores.
C. It cures brain disorders. D. It slows mental ageing.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Learning Betters Human Brain
B. Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages
C. Language Opens a New World to Kids
D. Bilingualism Leads to Academic Success

In recent years, people around the world have been working hard to protect endangered wildlife, and there have been some good results. For example, the number of Siberian cranes has been increasing steadily. However, a 2026 study from Cell Press tells us that focusing only on how many animals there are is not enough. We also need to care about how healthy these animal populations are. Relying too much on counting numbers has become a big problem for wildlife conservation today.
Take the Siberian cranes in Poyang Lake as an example. Although their numbers are growing, they face new dangers. The places where they live are getting worse, and human activities have forced them to move to rice fields and other farmlands. In these areas, the cranes are more likely to be exposed to pesticides, microplastics and diseases that spread among different animals. These risks make it harder for the cranes to live for a long time, even if their population numbers look good.
To solve this problem, scientists suggest a “multidimensional framework” to measure conservation success. This means we should not only count the animals but also check their physical health, genetic diversity, behaviors and the quality of their habitats. There are many successful stories of targeted conservation. In Uganda, the number of mountain gorillas has passed 1,000. This is because tourism money is used to hire rangers and turn former poachers into protectors. In New Zealand, the kākāpō, a flightless parrot once nearly extinct, has come back through breeding programs and habitat protection.
Challenges still exist. A 2025 report from the UK’s RSPB says 1500 British species are at risk of extinction, mainly due to habitat loss and climate change. But experts believe there is hope. By paying more attention to the overall health of wildlife instead of just numbers, we can help animals not only survive but also thrive in the future. As one conservationist said, “Saving a species means protecting both its numbers and its future.”
32. What is the main problem with modern wildlife conservation mentioned in the passage?
A. Not having enough money to carry out projects.
B. Focusing too much on animal population numbers.
C Lack of scientists to study endangered species.
D. Failure to set up protected areas for wildlife.
33. Why are the Siberian cranes in Poyang Lake facing new dangers?
A. They have lost their ability to fly long distances.
B. They are hunted by local people for food.
C. They are forced to live in farmlands with more risks.
D. Their food supply has completely disappeared.
34. What does the “multidimensional framework” for conservation success include?
A. Only counting the number of endangered animals.
B. Checking animals’ health, genetics and habitats.
C. Building more zoos to protect animals.
D. Stopping all human activities in nature.
35. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The Siberian crane is the most endangered bird in the world.
B. Tourism has helped protect mountain gorillas in Uganda.
C. All British species are in danger of extinction.
D. The kākāpō has become extinct due to habitat loss.

There was a girl named Emily. Although her singing was melodious and pleasant to hear, she lacked the courage to perform in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood announced a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to encourage her to participate, but Emily hesitated, saying, “I’m too afraid to join.” Her mother comforted her, “It’s alright; just be brave and give it a try.” Emily took her mother’s advice and resolved to participate. On the day of the competition, Emily and Lucy arrived at the venue. However, her timidity prevented her from stepping onto the stage immediately. She waited until all other participants had finished performing before forcing herself to stand shakily on the stage. She began to sing, but her voice was barely audible. What’s worse, her extreme nervousness caused her to forget the lyrics(歌词)after just a few lines. Mocked by the audience, overwhelmed with embarrassment and shyness, she fled the stage in tears.
Some boys chased after her, teasing, “Emily, coward! Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, threw her arms around her mother and sobbed bitterly.“Well, my poor girl, don’t cry. Tell me what happened,” her mother gently asked. Emily told her experience in detail.Listening attentively, her mother cupped her face and said, “It doesn’t matter, my dear. As long as you practice singing more frequently in front of strangers, you will gradually become braver. Don’t let a single failure discourage you. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening, keep singing and never give up. I firmly believe your efforts will be rewarded.”

C Involve kids in foreign language courses.
D. Help kids absorb knowledge like a sponge.
30. What has the Scottish researchers proved about bilingualism?
A. It extends one’s life. B. It improves test scores.
C. It cures brain disorders. D. It slows mental ageing.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Learning Betters Human Brain
B. Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages
C. Language Opens a New World to Kids
D. Bilingualism Leads to Academic Success
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. B

故选A项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language.(多语父母明白学习多种语言的好处)”及Ben Mazor说的话“So why not give them the chance to learn another language?(所以为什么不给他们学习另一种语言的机会呢?)”可推知,像Ben Mazor这样的会说多种语言的家长明白多语的好处,他们可能会让孩子参加外语课程。故选C项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第一段中“Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, ‘Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.’(该研究的合著者Thomas Baka博士总结道:‘我们的研究结果表明,双语对对抗与年龄相关的认知衰退具有保护作用’)”可知,苏格兰研究者证明,说双语能减缓精神衰老。故选D项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.(然而,科学家们继续证实,双语能力,即流利地说两种语言的能力,比许多人意识到的好处更多)”可推知,本文主要讲述研究表明,说双语有很多好处,故“Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages”是最佳标题。故选B项。
D
A 2025 report from the UK’s RSPB says 1,500 British species are at risk of extinction, mainly due to habitat loss and climate change.
C. Lack of scientists to study endangered species.
A The Siberian crane is the most endangered bird in the world.
B Tourism has helped protect mountain gorillas in Uganda.
C. All British species are in danger of extinction.
D. The kākāpō has become extinct due to habitat loss.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. B 35. B

【答案】Dear Sir/ Madam,
The Internet has transformed the world into a global village, altering all aspects of our life, especially education. Here, I am writing to share my thoughts on its positive effect as well as negative one.
The most obvious advantage lies in the wide choice of courses. Learners can have access to the courses tailored for personal needs regardless of time and space. As a result, learning occurs in such an efficient way that gaining knowledge is easier than ever. The downside is just as noticeable. Along with individualized courses, the Internet presents half-truths that puzzle the young minds where self-control and judging power are still forming.
Therefore, I strongly suggest that the use of the Internet should be under supervision of adults. And parents and teachers should provide guidance to ensure it best serves the mental and physical growth of the teens.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
