It was a perfect summer morning on the beach in Rio de Janeiro. A man set up his umbrella and chair near the water and was ready to read his book. Just then, when he looked towards the sea, he noticed a small shape that came out of the water. It slowly made its way out onto the sand and began to flap (拍动) its wings. It was obviously feeble and tired.
When the creature was just a few feet away, the man couldn’t believe his eyes. A penguín (企鹅)? Penguins don’t belong to Rio. The man was amazed. He looked around to see if there was anyone else nearby to see this strange sight.
A jogger soon appeared, followed by another. They stopped and looked at the penguin. It was clear that the penguin was having trouble breathing. The first jogger looked at the sea and said, “Poor thing, so far away from home.”
The penguin fell to its side. It had swum 2,000 miles, trying to find the tiny fish that penguins like to eat. Why did the penguin need to travel so far? Perhaps it was confused by moving ocean currents (洋流) and temperatures — common effects of global warming. The penguin needed help. It would not survive on the hot sand.
One of the joggers phoned for help, and soon some firemen arrived. The man was relieved that the penguin would soon be safe, although he felt a little sad, too.
The event on the beach at Rio happened some time ago. It was only the beginning of penguins’ movement to Brazil. Since that time, hundreds of penguins have appeared on the coasts of Brazil. They come all the way from Patagonia and the Straits of Magellan, southern parts of South America. They land on the sands very tired and hungry, and many of them die. Some are shipped or flown back to colder waters farther south.
Perhaps the experience of the penguins will help us better understand the serious effect of human activity on climate (气候) change and on the condition of our planet.
24. What does the underlined word “feeble” in the first paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Heavy. B. Excited. C. Weak. D. Dirty.
25. Why did the man think it strange to see a penguin?
A. Penguins do not live in Brazil. B. The penguin was moving very fast.
C. The penguin was not afraid of him. D. Penguins there had already died out.
26. What probably caused the penguin to land on the beach in Rio?
A. Sea ice decreasing. B. Energy from the sun.
C. Pollution in South America. D. Changes in ocean currents and temperature.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Beaches in Brazil B. A Penguin’s Life
C. Effects of Global Warming D. The Penguins of Brazil

Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy life.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. The hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
Husbands and wives use doghouse when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for forgetting their wedding anniversary She might tell him that he is in the doghouse and treats him badly. However, the husband may decide that it is best to leave things alone and not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.
28. What does the underlined expression “work like a dog” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Become successful. B. Have an unhappy life.
C. Compete for the same things. D. Work extremely hard.
29. If a man suffers a serious failure at work, what might his wife say to encourage him?
A. It will rain cats and dogs. B. Every dog has its day.
C. You lead a dog’s life. D. You are in the doghouse.
30. Which of the following has the same meaning as “leave things untouched”?
A. Become sick as a dog. B. Teach an old dog new tricks.
C. Let sleeping dogs lie. D. Make people dog-tired.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Expressions in American culture. B. Some expressions with the word dog.
C. A fun way to learn English. D. Dogs’ influence on American culture.
D
Elephants on the coast of Thailand are acting strangely. They stamp their feet and signal (示意) towards the hills. The sea draws back from the beaches. Fish flop (扑腾) on the seabed. Suddenly, a huge wave appears. This is no ordinary wave. It is a tsunami!
Tsunami waves are larger and faster than normal surface waves. A tsunami wave can travel as fast as a jet plane and can be as tall as a ten-storey building. Imagine dropping a stone into a pool. The water on the surface ripples (起细浪). A tsunami is like a very powerful ripple. Tsunamis begin when the ocean rises or falls very suddenly. Lots of seawater is displaced. This movement causes huge waves.
If a tsunami happens, there must be some kind of force that causes the ocean water to become displaced. Most tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes. However, volcanoes, landslides, and large icebergs can also cause one of these huge waves.
Tsunamis are extremely powerful. Ordinary waves lose power when they break. Tsunami waves can remain powerful for several days. Because tsunami waves are so strong, they can kill people, damage buildings, and completely ruin an ecosystem in just one hour.
Scientists have no way of telling people in advance when a tsunami will hit. However, if a powerful enough earthquake happens, scientists can send out a warning or a watch. A warning means that a tsunami will very likely hit soon. A watch means that conditions are suitable for a tsunami. When people receive a watch or a warning, they have more time to prepare. It is best not to get caught unaware (没意识到) when a tsunami is on the way!
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. Causes of tsunamis. B. Signs of tsunamis.
C. The force of tsunamis. D. The effect of tsunamis.
33. What does the underlined word “displaced” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Moved. B. Polluted. C. Stored. D. Lost.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. A warning is more serious than a watch.
B. A warning is sent out after an earthquake.
C. A watch means a tsunami may not happen.
D. A warning means a tsunami will surely happen.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To tell a story. B. To provide facts.
C. To give advice. D. To compare opinions.

It was a perfect summer morning on the beach in Rio de Janeiro. A man set up his umbrella and chair near the water and was ready to read his book. Just then when he looked towards the sea, he noticed a small shape that came out of the water.
C 25. A 26. D 27. D
根据第一段中“It slowly made its way out onto the sand and began to flap (拍动) its wings. It was obviously feeble and tired.(它慢慢地爬到沙滩上,开始拍打翅膀。它显然feeble,很疲惫。)”可知,这只企鹅慢慢地爬到沙滩上,很疲惫,说明它虚弱无力,因此feeble意思是“虚弱的”。故选C。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Penguins don’t belong to Rio. The man was amazed.(企鹅不属于里约热内卢。这个人很惊讶。)”可知,这个人认为在里约热内卢看到企鹅很奇怪是因为企鹅并不生活在巴西。故选A。
根据第四段中“Perhaps it was confused by moving ocean currents (洋流) and temperatures — common effects of global warming.(也许它被移动的洋流和温度所迷惑,这是全球变暖的常见影响。)”
通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“Perhaps the experience of the penguins will help us better understand the serious effect of human activity on climate (气候) change and on the condition of our planet.(也许企鹅的经历将帮助我们更好地理解人类活动对气候变化和我们星球状况的严重影响。)”
C
30 Which of the following has the same meaning as “leave things untouched”?
D 29. B 30. C 31. B

根据第三段中“Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life.(不过,人们说每个人都有得意的时候。这意味着每个人在他或她的一生中都会有一段成功的时期)”并结合选项,A. It will rain cats and dogs. B. Every dog has its day. C. You lead a dog’s life. D. You are in the doghouse.

He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie.(然而,丈夫可能会决定最好leave things alone,不要制造更多问题。 A. Become sick as a dog. B. Teach an old dog new tricks. C. Let sleeping dogs lie. D. Make people dog-tired.
B 33. A 34. B 35. B

根据第一段关键句“Elephants on the coast of Thailand are acting strangely. They stamp their feet and signal (示意) towards the hills. The sea draws back from the beaches. Fish flop (扑腾) on the seabed.”(泰国海岸上的大象行为很奇怪。 和“Suddenly, a huge wave appears. This is no ordinary wave. It is a tsunami!”(突然,一个巨浪出现了。
根据画线单词上句“Tsunamis begin when the ocean rises or falls very suddenly.”(当海洋突然涨落时,海啸就开始了。) 故选A项。
根据最后一段关键句“Scientists have no way of telling people in advance when a tsunami will hit. However, if a powerful enough earthquake happens, scientists can send out a warning or a watch.”(科学家们无法提前告诉人们海啸何时发生。
通读全文,结合第二段关键句“Tsunamis begin when the ocean rises or falls very suddenly.”(当海洋突然涨落时,海啸就开始了。)
