How long or far is “sanshe” in the idiom “tuibisanshe (退避三舍)”? In ancient times, she (舍) was a unit of distance (距离). One she (舍) is equal to (等于) 30 li. One li is 500 meters and 30 li is 15,000 meters. So sanshe, meaning three she, is 45 km.
There is a story behind this idiom. During the Spring and Autumn Period (770—476B. C. ), Prince Chong’ er of the JinState fled (逃离) from his home state. He had to travel to other states.
Once, he went to the state of Chu. King Chengwang of Chu saw him as an important guest (客人) and served him a big dinner. He asked Chong’ er, “If you rule the state of Jin one day, how would you thank me?” “It seems your state has everything you want. I have nothing that you like,” Chong’ er said. However, the king still asked for something. Finally, Chong’ er said. “I would ask my army to retreat (撤退) sanshe if we ever fight”
Later Chong’ er returned to his home state Jin and became its ruler Wengong. Both of the two states wanted to become stronger and get more land. They went to war with each other.
Jin Wengong didn’t break his promise. He asked his army to retreat sanshe and stay in Chengpu. The Chu army thought the Jin soldiers were afraid to fight, so they followed them. To their surprise, the Jin army surrounded them. In the end, Jin won the war. This was the famous Battle of Chengpu. After this war, people used “tuibisanshe” to mean retreating to avoid a conflict

The Eye of the Sahara is one of Earth’s most amazing natural wonders. It’s a special place in the desert (沙漠) of Mauritania, Africa. Looking from the sky, it looks like a huge, bright eye! It is as long as 500 football fields. The Eye looks like a big round pizza with different colored parts.
How was it made? Millions of years ago, the ground under the sand started to rise up. Then, wind and rain slowly wore away the soft rocks (岩石), leaving the hard ones behind. Over time, these hard rocks formed the beautiful circles we see today. From above, you can count about 10 round circles, each one has a different color. The biggest circle is on the outside, with smaller ones inside.
But the Eye of the Sahara is in trouble. The desert is very dry, and sandstorms often blow over it. The sand can make the rocks difficult to see. Also, not many people know about this amazing place because it’s far from big cities.
What can we do to help? Scientists are studying the Eye to find ways to conserve the rocks from sand. Some people also suggest building a small road or a simple visitor center nearby. This way, more kids and tourists can come and see the Eye of the Sahara.
11. What does the Eye of the Sahara look like?
A. A football field. B. A bright star.

12. What can we learn about the circles of the Eye from Paragraph 2?
A. They are all the same size. B. The smallest circle is in the center.
C. Each circle has the same color. D. There are about 8 round circles.
13. Why can’t many people visit the Eye of the Sahara easily?
A. Because it’s too small to find. B. Because it’s far from cities.
C. Because it’s always full of water. D. Because it’s too hot to get there.
14. What does the underlined word “conserve” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Climb. B. Hike. C. Develop. D. Protect.

44. encourage

因为文中提到“get…to different cultures”,且固定搭配“get close to”意为“接近,接触”,所以选择close。
因为“life isn’t always perfect”与后文“they can still find joy”之间存在转折逻辑,符合although“尽管”的用法,所以选择although。

根据文中“‘If I send him some gifts, he’ll be happy.’ …I got his school address...”

B询问“When are you free to help me with my spelling?”,下文A说“I am not free from Monday to Saturday.”,可知A应是说自己周日有空,故用“I’m free on Sundays./On Sundays.”

C. ) Prince Chong’ er of the JinState fled (逃离) from his home state.

C. A colorful pizza. D. A deep ocean.

A. Because it’s too small to find. B. Because it’s far from cities.
C. Because it’s always full of water. D. Because it’s too hot to get there.
14. What does the underlined word “conserve” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Climb. B. Hike. C. Develop. D. Protect.
