I am Mari. I live in Flint, Michigan. About five years ago, our water began to smell funny. My family started getting really bad skin problems. My little sister needed special medicine. She wasn’t the only kid in Flint who got so sick. Some people suffered from bad headaches. Others had stomachaches. Across the city, people complained that something was seriously wrong with their tap water. Our water was polluted. We couldn’t drink or cook with the water from our tap. We had to use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and brushing our teeth. The only safe way to take baths was to heat up water from bottles. In 2015, when I was 8 years old, I decided to speak up for the people of Flint. I wrote a letter to then-President Barack Obama to ask him for help. In response, he came to speak with our community. I got to meet him. But I wanted to do more. My friends and family helped me start a campaign (活动) for Flint. Our goal was to raise $15,000. So far, we’ve collected $280,000! For the past few years, I’ve been giving out bottles of water and new water filters (过滤器) to people in my city. Many people in Flint still can’t use their tap water. I’ve also used social media to ask people around the world for help. I have more than 100,000 followers on the Internet, including famous people and regular people from different countries. Most people now know me as Little Miss Flint. I’m proud that I am able to help my neighbors get clean water. I’ll continue until every single Flint citizen feels safe drinking the water from their taps. I also want people to realize that Flint isn’t the only place with water issues. It’s important for us all to ask questions about what’s in the water at school and at home. My goal is to run for U.S. president in 2044—as soon as I’m old enough. But you don’t have to be an adult to change the world. It starts with helping out in your own community. You have a voice and the ability to make that voice heard. Don’t let anyone stop you. Task 1  Answer the questions. 1.Mari’s little sister wasn’t the only kid in Flint who got so sick, was she? 2.Why couldn’t people in Flint drink or cook with the water from their tap? 3.What did Mari do to speak up for the people of Flint in 2015? 4.How do Mari and her team help people in Flint with the money they have raised? 5.According to the passage, what are the things that Mari is now working on? (list 2 things) Task 2   6.What can we learn from what Mari said to teenagers in the last paragraph? (No more than 20 words. ) (你能从最后一段Mari对青少年说的这段话中收获什么?不超过20个字) 【答案】1.No, she wasn’t. Passage 02 阅读下面短文,回答问题。 Do you or your family know an elderly person who may feel lonely? Perhaps you have a grandparent who doesn’t live nearby and who might not see many people. It’s thought that there could be more than a million lonely old people in the UK who often feel sad. This might because they live alone, or they might be in a care home and haven’t got family or friends who visit. Simply writing a letter can help to cheer them up. It’s an easy thing to do but can make a big impact. Everyday things that you do, such as what you learned at school, sporting achievements or places you visit, might seem ordinary to you but an old person would be happy to read about them in a letter. It could make them think back to when they were young and did similar things. The person may also want to write back to you. Professor Smith, aged 67, set up a group called Silver Robin, which has helped children from six schools in Oxford to begin writing letters to old people. “It’s a lovely thing to do and connects different generations.” Loneliness is not a nice thing and if a young person’s letter puts a smile on someone’s face, then that’s wonderful. Where do I start? Ask your parents if there’s an elderly relative or family friend you can write to and they can help you get started. Your teachers may like to make contact with a local elderly care home so that your class can begin writing letters. How else can I help? There are other ways to help elderly people feel less lonely. For example, knowing the date of their birthday means you can send a card, saying hello and being nice to people in your street, checking on them with your family or knocking on their door sometimes just to see how they are can make a difference. 7.Many old people in the UK often feel sad, don’t they? 8.What can help to cheer lonely old people up? 9.Why would old people be happy to read about your everyday things in a letter? 10.What does Professor think of writing letters to old people? 11.What may your teachers like to do so that your class can begin writing letters? 12.There are other ways to help elderly people feel less lonely. Please share one of your ideas and explain why it is helpful. 【答案】7.Yes, they do. 8.Simply writing a letter can help to cheer them up. 9.Because it could make them think back to when they were young and did similar things. 10.He thinks it’s a lovely thing to do and connects different generations. 11.Our teachers may like to make contact with a local elderly care home so that our class can begin writing letters. 12.Encouraging them to attend schools for elderly people is another way to prevent them from being lonely because they can make new friends with their classmates and share their joy and sorrow. 【导语】本文介绍了很多老人感到孤独,就此提出通过写信等简单方式帮助他们缓解孤独感。 7.根据“It’s thought that there could be more than a million lonely old people in the UK who often feel sad.”可知,在英国很多老人不开心,所以此处是肯定回答,故填Yes, they do. 8.根据“Simply writing a letter can help to cheer them up.”可知,只要写信就有助于老人振作起来,故填Simply writing a letter can help to cheer them up. 9.根据“It could make them think back to when they were young and did similar things.”可知,老人们在读信的时候会回想起自己曾经的经历,所以会很开心。故填Because it could make them think back to when they were young and did similar things. 10.根据“It’s a lovely thing to do and connects different generations.”可知,教授认为这是很可爱的事情,能让不同年代的人联系起来,故填He thinks it’s a lovely thing to do and connects different generations. 11.根据“Your teachers may like to make contact with a local elderly care home so that your class can begin writing letters.”可知,老师跟一个养老院联系然后学生们就可以写信了,故填Our teachers may like to make contact with a local elderly care home so that our class can begin writing letters. 12.开放性问题,言之有理即可。首先分享自己的想法,并解释这种方法为什么是有帮助的。比如:加入老年大学,老人可以交到朋友,分享自己的感受,减少孤独感。故填Encouraging them to attend schools for elderly people is another way to prevent them from being lonely because they can make new friends with their classmates and share their joy and sorrow. Passage 03 阅读下面短文,回答问题。 It was difficult not to see the 8-year-old boy run in and out of his house repeatedly. His repeated actions caused the curiosity of his neighbor, William Dunn. “He said he didn’t have a father,” says Dunn, now aged 58. “And I realized that there might be something I could do to help him.” That “something” was fishing, a hobby that Dunn’s father had once shared with him. He did it at once. After fishing together several times, Dunn saw encouraging changes in the boy’s behavior. That was 16 years ago. Since then, Dunn has taken groups of fatherless kids fishing almost every weekend, teaching them how to set up a fishing line and bring in a big catch. “They’ve been through a lot, and their lives have been challenging,”-Dunn explains. “But when they’re fishing, all those pains disappear. On the boat, they laugh, smile, and make new friends. I knew I was onto something special.” Jayden, now 23, has become a fisherman and thanks Dunn for helping him grow up. He proudly mentions catching a shark with Dunn’s help, “I hope he knows that I mean it when I say thank you.” Another girl, 21-year-old Bella Smith, who is in a foster(抚养) program for young adults, notes that Dunn pays special attention to self-respect and spiritual strength. “When I’m fishing, I can forget about the past and enjoy something fun,” says Bella Smith. “Fishing has taught me that I can have a better life than what I had. Whenever I feel down, I know it’s time to go fishing.” “There’s nothing like feeling the first pull on the line and seeing a kid’s face light up with a smile,” Dunn adds. “I feel lucky to witness that every weekend.” 13.The children mentioned in the text didn’t have a father, did they? 14.After fishing together several times, what did Dunn see in the boy’s behaviour? 15.What did Dunn teach those children when he took them fishing almost every weekend? 16.Describe those children’s lives before they met Dunn with two adjectives. 17.What does Dunn give special importance to? 18.What do you think of Dunn? Passage 04 阅读下面短文,回答问题。 Cole loved helping in his mother’s garden since he was a child. But after he finished school, he worked as a salesman in a shopping center for thirty years. “Everything changed in 2016,” Cole said. That year, Cole’s mum, a flower-lover, moved in with him and his wife. She was shocked by so much litter on the street. “Why are there so many rubbish bags and empty bottles on this street?” she asked. She pointed at the dry tree pits (坑) outside their house and said, “Let’s plant some roses from our old garden here!” Mum and Cole began to work. They moved young rose plants into six tree pits. Guess what? The plants grew really well! To their surprise, there was no more litter around. “That was great! I realized that I could change something, rather than just sitting at home,” said Cole. In the following year, Cole created different gardens in six tree pits along the street. People up and down the street stopped to ask, “Who planted these flowers? They’re so beautiful!” and strangers turned into friends. Kids offered to water the plants. The next spring, the city used the strong grass killer on the whole street to kill wild grass. Days later, all the plants turned brown. Cole stood in front of the dead flowers, heartbroken. Then Aunt Mary from next door walked over with some seeds. “I have some flower seeds. Let’s start again!” The news spread. Tom brought young rose plants. Lisa brought sunflower seeds. Even Mr. Smith, the serious banker, gave strawberry vines from his garden. Soon, fifteen tree pits were full of colourful plants. A group of neighbours helped look after them. The experience led Cole to begin his “City Garden Project”. The project has turned over twenty parking lot corners into wildflower beds. Whenever he sees kids watching bees in the flower beds, he remembers his mum’s words: “No big heroes are needed to change the world.” 19.Why did Cole’s mum suggest planting roses? 20.Did the flowers Cole had planted die after the city used the grass killer? 21.What experience led Cole to start his “City Garden Project”? 22.What does “No big heroes are needed to change the world.” mean in the story? 23.How did Cole’s mum influence his “City Garden Project”? 【范文】 A Time I Helped Someone in Need Last month, I met an elderly lady outside the supermarket, and she looked very worried. She told me she couldn’t find her way home and had forgotten her family’s phone number. I felt sorry for her, so I decided to help. (No more than 20 words. ) (你能从最后一段Mari对青少年说的这段话中收获什么?不超过20个字) Passage 02 阅读下面短文,回答问题。 Do you or your family know an elderly person who may feel lonely? Give two reasons. (2 points) 24.If you were Cole, what would be your ways to protect the plants from the city’s grass killer? Passage 05 阅读下面短文,回答问题。 Taking part in charity (慈善) is not just for adults.
